William Afton's signature line, Five Nights at Freddy's series

William Afton is the co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment, as well as the main antagonist of the Five Nights at Freddy's series. He was directly and indirectly responsible for numerous incidents, deaths and tragedies throughout the series. His role in the franchise's story is pivotal.

Physical Appearance

Human

Since William Afton is only ever seen in human form in some of the minigames, it's hard to pin down his exact appearance to the point where itā€™s mostly unknown. While in the minigames, he is represented as a tall, skinny man with a long neck, with his sprite color ranging from various tones of purple, depending on the minigame. It is worth noting that he may appear purple because he is simply hiding in the shadows.

He is also sometimes depicted wearing a yellow accessory on his chest, presumably a security badge. It isn't until Five Nights at Freddy's 3 that he retained a consistent appearance, underutilized as it may be, though he has expressive eyes and a mouth that conveys his emotional state, however, his mouth appears to almost always be put in the form of a sadistic smile. It appears that he also has a cleft potruding chin.

Another instance in which William shows more detail than his other appearances is during the SAVETHEM Death Minigame, in which he has glowing, white eyes, a yellow object on his chest which resembles a badge, and either holds a purple object, which is speculated to be a weapon or tool, or extends his hand in a beckoning pose.

It's heavily implied that his true appearance resembles his novel counterpart making it very possible that he is middle-aged with pale saggy skin and dark brown messy hair with a somewhat pointy nose, crooked teeth as well as pronounced cheek bones and pointy eyebrows.

Springtrap

ā€œFIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S Graphic designed animatronic bipedal green rabbit, Springtrap, with only partial right ear, and holes throughout body exposing wiring.ā€
Scott Cawthon's page, "Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)"[1]

Springtrap is William's reanimated corpse sealed in a heavily damaged Spring Bonnie animatronic/springlock suit. This version first appeared in Five Nights at Freddy's 3.

The suit is a drab olive color, with darker colors on his stomach and the insides of his ears. A great portion of his right ear is missing, with a single red wire sticking out of the stump. Springtrap's entire body is torn and tattered, with gaping holes bearing exposed wires and caging throughout, making him appear much more macabre-looking than any of the other animatronics from any previous installments in the series. His green/brown/black nose has an irregular squarish shape due to deterioration. While both of Springtrap's hands and feet are attached and generally intact, his legs are entirely stripped from the mid-shin down, fully exposing the endoskeleton wiring and metal. Several of his finger joints from each hand are missing their suit overlays. The middle and little fingers of Springtrap's right hand are notably missing their fingertips. A single black button can be seen on the middle of his chest. If one looks closely at the large hole in Springtrap's chest (which is located under his button), there are multiple red streaks, presumably remnants of William Afton's corpse.

Springtrap's endoskeleton feet appear wedge-shaped, with each sporting five toes. As of the 8th of October, 2016, images of an early Springtrap model show his visible endoskeleton torso in the shape of an upside-down triangle. It has six "ribs", which almost act like actual animal ones. The torso also has several of Afton's blood-vessels drooping on each side.

Both of Springtrap's eyes are properly set inside of his head, and appear to be pale gray in color. The eyes themselves are larger, more closely resembling those of an animatronic rather than those of a human, as the corpse contained inside Springtrap is that of an animatronic endoskeleton (with Afton's mummified head (and what remains of its internal organs), gastrointestinal tract, and blood-vessels his only remains). However, the eyes are also deteriorated and printed with barely-visible blood-vessels, causing them to appear eerily-human. Each iris is black and grayish-green in color, with glowing white pupils.

Springtrap has a wide, permanent grin, as the material surrounding his teeth has deteriorated. In a paranormal manner, his jaw can be seen moving (while Afton's mouth cannot move) on occasions, such as during his second jumpscare, on CAM 15, his first rare-boot, along with Scott Cawthon's "Thank You!" image.

Close examination of Springtrap and the rare-boot images depicting him show that there appears to be human remains within the suit. When viewing the torso and other exposed sections of the endoskeleton, there are decayed chunks of Afton's gastrointestinal tract, while his neck is covered with blood-vessels. Rare screens reveal William's mummified head. It is reddish-pink in color, with its orbits larger than the eyes themselves. Its mouth always hangs open, with crooked teeth and what appears to be several more blood-vessels. The jaw and teeth of the head can be briefly seen during his second jumpscare, and can also be seen when he's on CAM 15. The corpse's head can also be seen clearly from Springtrap's early model screenshot. It is revealed in the end-of-night minigames (after completing Night 5) that these are William Afton's remains, after he was killed by the springlocks within the suit. From Springtrap's render-modelling screenshot, William's corpse doesn't appear to have any ears at all, though, this may be due to the fact that they would be covered by the animatronic head regardless.

As seen in Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted, Springtrap also walks and crawls with a limp. The arm joints also appear to be loose, though this may simply be due to the deteriorated condition of the original suit. Help Wanted also alters his general design, the suit itself being a lighter color. The biggest change between the Help Wanted model and the original is Springtrap's corpse. The eyes are now bright green with black pupils, looking more animatronic than human this time. While the corpse's head is a dark purple in color, the rest of the flesh on the body is a dark brown. Parts of the flesh are missing, such as the strands of flesh on the lower legs, or the flesh that goes from the torso to the pelvis. His endoskeleton is rustier, and seems slightly less detailed.

Springtrap's design in Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery is a lot closer to the Five Nights at Freddy's 3 design, with some very slightly different textures from his original look. The biggest difference is the corpse mouth, which stretches and unhinges alongside the jaw now. Like most other Special Delivery animatronics, the more damage Springtrap takes, the more broken he is, gaining more dark burn and dirt marks over time.

Scraptrap

ā€œSimilar to Springtrap, Scraptrap is a yellowish rabbit, though he's considerably more worn and damaged, with holes throughout his body and wires poking out. His top jaw shows off buckteeth, with pointed fangs on his bottom jaw. With a severed forearm, no ears, and some suspiciously human-looking parts beneath his fur, Scraptrap is certainly a sight to behold.ā€
The Freddy Files: Updated Edition, page 156

William Afton returned once again in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator with a new design, dubbed Scraptrap by fans. While he does retain some key physical details to the previous design, there are some major differences. Unlike the previous design where his interior was mostly machinery, it is now almost entirely organic, and includes his human skeleton as well as bits of flesh, with five bony fingers as his right hand. There are more torn patches in his suit with multiple metal-wires, and he has lost his left forearm, half his left ear, and the rest of his right ear. His feet now have fabric over them, with three large, round toes on each foot.

His eyes no longer glow, and look less human. They instead appear to be large metallic balls with a small dent each (which appear to be his pupils).

The mask also has significant differences, with much larger eye sockets, a black nose, a square muzzle, a singular pair of buck teeth at the top row and small sharp needle-like teeth at the bottom. Afton's mummified head is clean of blood, now with ears, thicker lips, rigged teeth and a dimple. The texture of the skin appears to be bone, showing that his corpse has decayed the the point where his skeleton is exposed.

Personality

Initially, William's story was mostly told via silent actions within retro-graphics, or by reading between the lines throughout the games.

William Afton is the textbook definition of evil. He is the murderer of the five children that sparked the downfall of Fazbear Entertainment, and started the tragic chain of events that leads players through the series. It's implied William's true motive is to gain immortality and live eternally. Judging by his actions and appearance within the games, William is wicked, cold blooded and methodical, clearly shows no remorse for his actions, he was even malicious enough to murder his closest friend Henry's daughter Charlotte, an event which caused Henry immense emotional turmoil to the point where he nearly committed suicide. This shows that William is more than willing to hurt his own friends physically, emotionally and mentally.

As shown in every minigame he is seen in he always smiles in a unhinged manner during his killings, showing that William is extremely ruthless and sadistic and appears to take delight, satisfaction, and pride in the murder of innocent people, especially children. The Pizza Party minigame in Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted shows this further as it appears to be a recreation of one of Afton's murders. William in the form of Glitchtrap can be seen dancing gleefully after murdering the victim, taunting them while they are trapped inside of a robotic suit and suffering a slow and painful death. One of William's voice lines in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator suggest that he is opportunistic, and will murder children regardless of the risks.

Heard in the opening cutscene of Sister Location, William shows a rather calm and neutral personality. This is likely to hide his true intentions and evil mindset while showing that he is a manipulator and somewhat theatrical. The fact that he created the Funtime Animatronics, which are very advanced and technological, shows that he has a genius level intellect and a talent for robotics and is very proud of his creations. He is also fascinated by how they have evolved after the events of Sister Location.

His voice lines in Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery indicate that he is arrogant, boastful, and overconfident in his way of thinking, and even indicates he wants his victims to to fear and respect him as well as suffer slowly before he kills them. This is in contrast to his subtle, poetic, and calculated voice. His mannerisms are incredibly flamboyant and unhinged. It seems that William's hubris grew larger as he became more experienced as a killer, which explains his behavior in Five Nights at Freddy's 3 and Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator. It's indicated that in his Springtrap form, his arrogance is rooted in a belief that he is superior to regular humans beings in his new state.

It is heavily suggested that William is driven by an iron will to live no matter the cost and has an immense fear of death, which pushed him to survive even in the most deadly situations time and time again. He showcases this by confidently stating "I always come back".

Despite his cruel nature, it is implied that he cared about his daughter Elizabeth, as he warned her not to go near Circus Baby, because he programmed the animatronic to be homicidal. Elizabeth herself implies that Baby was made as a symbol of affection for her. William even orders his son Michael to free Elizabeth from Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental. This could indicate that she was one of the only people William seemed to care about, or, at the very least, had a cognitive connection to.

Besides that, his relationship with his son Michael is made clear. From what we learn from Sister Location, he sent him on a dangerous mission to rescue Elizabeth from the underground facility, which ended up in Michael's gruesome death and reanimation as a rotting corpse. Taking in this information, it's likely that he didn't have an emotional connection for most (if not all) of his family, rendering him to be nearly heartless.

William Afton was the founder of Afton Robotics, LLC and co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment, Inc.. William had two known children with an unknown wife; his daughter Elizabeth Afton, and his son Michael Afton. It is heavily implied that William had a third unnamed child.

At some point before the year 1983, most likely in the 70s, William met a man named Henry Emily, who helped open their first location together, Fredbear's Family Diner.

MinigameChBullies-FFPS

In 1983, the duo opened their second location together, Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. For unknown reasons, William murdered Henry's daughter, Charlotte Emily, outside of Fredbear's or Freddy's. Before or after this incident occurred, Afton's presumed third child was seemingly killed after being shoved into Fredbear's operating mouth, thus causing Fredbear's Family Diner to close.

Fifth body

The aftermath of William's heinous murders.

In either 1983 or 1985 on the night of June 26th, William killed five children named Gabriel, Jeremy, Susie, Fritz, and Cassidy at Freddy's using a Spring Bonnie costume to gain their trust. However, he was caught on camera, but was apparently let go, most likely due to the bodies never being found and thus there was no concrete evidence he was guilty. However, the five children would later be reborn with the help of the The Puppet who was possessed by Charlie. Because of this, they then go on to haunt Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and the elusive Golden Freddy respectively. The spirits then gained a thirst for revenge against their murderer or any adults like him out of confusion, thus causing their homicidal actions against anyone who enters the pizzeria after dark. Customers start noticing blood and mucus coming from the animatronics, which leads to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza closing down and the company to be sold to unknown buyers.

After the pizzeria's closure, William opens his own restaurant called Circus Baby's Pizza World with a new set of animatronics called the Funtime Animatronics. One in particular, Circus Baby, was seemingly made in honor of his daughter, Elizabeth. However, William designed these robots not with the intent of entertainment, but to capture and kill children to obtain Remnant, in which he discovered after an incident involving the robots from Freddy's. Afton wanted to discover the secrets of Remnant to become immortal. Elizabeth was warned not to go anywhere near the animatronics. However, she ignored his instructions, resulting in her death and closure of the pizzeria, which was masked as a gas leak.

Afton then opened Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental, which is a service that lets customers rent out the Funtime Animatronics for private parties. He soon sold the rights of his independent company to Fazbear Entertainment. At an unknown time period, William sent his son Michael into the facility to locate and "free" Elizabeth, who's spirit had possessed Baby.

In 1987, William, apparently pretending to be a security guard, proceeded to kill five more children at the New Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Location, who are heavily implied to haunt the Toy Animatronics. Afterwards, William once again vanished.

William Afton then returned to the abandoned Freddy's restaurant to dismantle the original animatronics so they could not pose a threat to him anymore. However, he awoke the ghosts of the five children he murdered unintentionally freeing from their metal suits that trapped their souls, this resulted in them attacking William. Fleeing from the spirits, William escaped into the safe room where Spring Bonnie had been placed for storage. He donned the suit to hide from the ghosts, apparently fooling them.

William being crushed by the Spring Bonnie suit.

In his arrogance, William stood and laughed at the ghosts while inside Spring Bonnie. However, the faulty mechanisms within Spring Bonnie malfunctioned, causing William to be crushed and sliced by the endoskeleton and gears, brutally killing him. Phone Guy's tapes also foreshadow this; he explains that the person wearing the costumes must not get moisture on the springlocks or make sudden movements to decrease the chance of injury. Afton broke these rules; he made sudden movements by jumping into the suit, and failed to notice the rainwater seeping into the building and onto the springlocks. On top of that, he was laughing at the spirits, thinking his plan had succeeded. This resulted in the locks becoming loose by moisture, causing his slow and agonizing death.

Years later, Fazbear's Fright: The Horror Attraction was opened as an homage to The Missing Children Incident and other incidents that made Fazbear Entertainment infamous. Employees found the withered Spring Bonnie animatronic in one of the safe rooms and reused it for the attraction. There, William came back as Springtrap. He remained there for less than a week, stalking and hunting the night guard during the night, until the building burnt down.

Springtrap was revealed to have survived the burning, as seen from the final cutscene in Sister Location.

William's end?

His fate after the fire was revealed in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator. He left the remains of Fazbear's Fright and eventually ended up in the Back Alley outside Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place, where he was salvaged, and later destroyed, in the burning of the pizzeria as part of his old friend Henry's revenge and ultimate plan while the rest of the souls were laid to rest. Only William remained. He was soon tormented in an eternal nightmare created by the vengeful spirit of Golden Freddy, the fifth victim William killed in The Missing Children Incident, a boy named Cassidy.

After several years, he somehow escapes from his endless torture and once again comes back. This time as a digital virus known as Glitchtrap, after the developers of The Freddy Fazbear Virtual Experience scanned the circuit boards of his charred suit's remains, which his soul was latched on to. He escapes by transferring himself into the mind of a beta tester named Vanny, who he has brainwashed into committing his evil deeds at the Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex.
