Summary[]
Maya sneaks into a closed AR attraction that simulates a perfect birthday party with Maya's friends and family. When Maya returns home, strange things start happening: everyone is getting cancer, people are giving birth to jelly-like blobs, and everyone is acting normal about it. As everyone around Maya dies from cancer and the jelly-like blobs grow to emcompass the entire Earth, Maya realizes that she may still be trapped in the AR simulation. As the blobs suffocate her, she wonders if she is able to die.
Plot[]
Maya, named after the month she was born in, and her friends Noelle and Jaxon visit Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex to celebrate her 16th birthday. While enjoying a meal, Jaxon begins to explain a theory he read the night before about “quantum immortality.” Relating to the many-worlds theory, the argument is that a person never dies as their consciousness continues to experience existence in other realities. Having recently lost her uncle in a car accident, Noelle is hurt by Jaxon’s oblivious explanation of the theory and Maya hurries her friends off to visit the Pizzaplex’s premier attraction: an AR unit titled “The World Celebrates You!” which claims to give the illusion a perfect birthday party where everyone inside the Pizzaplex celebrates the user.
After stopping by a VR booth Maya drags her friends to the AR unit, however she is devastated to learn that the booth is closed with a sign on the exhibit reading “Closed, Under Construction.” Noelle and Jaxon try to comfort her, but Maya ignores the sign and enters the AR unit anyway. Her friends join her inside and Maya quickly puts on a sensory headband as Jaxon gets the machine working. Suddenly, she experiences a large birthday party where everyone in the Pizzaplex, as well as all her family and neighbors, celebrates her birthday. After blowing out her candles, the band puts on Maya’s favorite rock song and she dances with Jaxon. Time warps as Maya is suddenly eating cake and opening presents. She is overjoyed by the experience and wishes it would last forever.
Eventually, Maya leaves the AR unit and joins Noelle and Jaxon on the Fast Freddy, letting her friends decide how the rest of her trip goes since she just wanted the AR birthday party. She arrives home after ten and joins her parents for a few games of cards before heading off to bed with her younger sister, Elena. The next day, during Maya’s usual birthday party with her family, she begins feeling mild headaches where the AR headband nodes touched her skin. She chalks it up to pure coincidence and enjoys her party, where Gran gifts her a gold rose pendant. Sometime later, Gran is diagnosed with breast cancer. Maya continues to feel the mild headaches as the year continues, but still tells herself it’s nothing. Then, on Maya’s 17th birthday, Gran dies surrounded by her family. Maya is distraught to have lost one of her favorite people on the planet, questioning why it couldn’t have been someone mean like the dog abusing Mr. Vance.
A few days later, Pappy is diagnosed with a fast growing brain cancer. Unable to care for himself, Maya and her extended family take turns caring for him. Before Pappy dies, Gramps is diagnosed with cancer as well but refuses to fight it. Elena tries researching possible causes, but the article she’s looking at turns to “Page Under Construction.” When Nana gets cancer and dies only a few days after Gramps and Pappy’s passing, Maya begins to realize something is wrong. Family friends begin to get diagnosed and pass away, and at school everyone nonchalantly mentions their relatives getting cancer. Maya tries talking to Jaxon and Noelle about it, but they tell her everything is normal. Maya spends her summer treating all her sick friends and relatives, including her father, as much as she can. In August her favorite teacher, Mrs. Carpenter, has her first baby, named Cecilia. Maya and Noelle go to visit her and Maya is shocked to see that Cecilia looks like a “jelly-filled, lifeless rag doll,” however she is the only one who is concerned by her appearance.
That night, Maya’s mother reveals that she has cancer and Maya is disgusted by everyone’s calm reaction to a point where she vomits. By the start of her senior year, most teachers are dead and most activities are canceled. Maya begins watching the news constantly, however the news anchors happily report hundreds of thousands of cancer deaths all over the world. Meanwhile, more of the jelly-things are being born across the world. A couple days after seeing Cecilia for the first time, Maya spots Mrs. Carpenter after skirting around a “Sidewalk Under Construction” sign. In the passenger seat is Cecilia, which is now child-sized, and Maya is horrified to learn that the blobs grow up into adults in a matter of days.

Jelly creatures walk down the street.
By Christmas, Maya’s entire family has grown ill. A family friend and pastor visits Maya, and she’s horrified to learn that the jelly creatures are baptized. One day, Maya notices how dull the world is getting, with the only colorful thing left being her gold rose pendant, which she uses to help push her through the following days. The night sky reminds her of the AR unit, and she thinks back to constant headaches she had and realizes she doesn’t recall how much time passed between her birthday and Gran’s passing. Before Maya can ponder further, Elena calls for her. As time passes, the jelly-mannequins begin to multiply faster each day, with Maya witnessing one give birth while going to treat Jaxon, and they begin to pile up all over public areas.
After treating Jaxon, Maya returns home shocked to find it nearly surrounded by mounds of the mannequin-things. Once inside she discovers her parents have passed away, and her two cousins, Axel and Abril, are refusing to eat. Maya goes to check on Elena but discovers that she forgot to restock on medical supplies, so she gets in her car and drives to the nearest chemotherapy dispensary, avoiding multiple “Road Under Construction” signs. After getting the supplies she stops by the Thompsons’ house to treat the only living member, 11-year-old Donny, who gives her a late, handmade 17th birthday gift. The road is blocked by the creatures so Maya runs home to treat her family, passing a still living Mr. Vance. Once home, Maya finds Abril crying, and as she calms Abril down Axel passes away.

Maya is suffocated by the jelly creatures.
Maya has an epiphany that everything bad happened after she left the AR booth, and questions if the reality she’s in is the true one, or a false one created by the technology. She brushes it off, however, and goes to treat Elena. Maya gives Elena her medicine and begins to lay down next to her, but when she does the creatures shatter the window and begin flowing into the room. Maya goes to help Elena up but learns she had passed away seconds before the window shattered. Maya runs into the garage only to discover that some of the creatures had made it in when she was closing it earlier, and they had multiplied rapidly. She holds onto her gold rose pendant as she is consumed by the creatures, and the sensation of being crushed and suffocated overwhelms her. However, Maya doesn’t die, and she’s left wondering if death will ever come for her.
Speculation[]

"I was the first! I have seen everything!"
This section archives a lot of theories and speculation, which usually occurs from pre-release media, or just things that are still unknown, so please keep that in mind while reading. The page will continue to be updated with the most accurate information as more solid evidence is supplied. |
- In Cleithrophobia, the AR Booth is described to be filled with smoke. Maya's sensation of suffocation at the end of the story may be due to the literal lack of air inside of the booth.
- This story seemingly parallels Princess Quest mini-game. In both cases, the protagonist walks throughout virtual world while glitching creatures roam around, with both ending as the protagonist gets absorbed into the mass of glitching creatures. In Maya's story she was absorbed by a mound of glitched placeholder's called Jelly-People, while in Princess Quest, the titular Princess gets absorbed by Glitchtrap amalgamation.
Trivia[]
- Many of the attractions mentioned to be in Mega Pizzaplex got their own stories later in the series.
- There is a pizza themed Tilt-A-Whirl mentioned in this story. Strangely enough, this was said to be a cupcake themed Tilt-A-Whirl in Cleithrophobia the prologue of this story being implied to take place around the same time as the events of Under Construction.
