I don't think Gaster had any wish to be erased from space-time as one of the big things about Gaster is how he reflects humanity's fear of being forgotten.
Although Sans does have an extensive awareness of the other timelines indicating a sensitivity to the flow of the space-time continuum only a time traveller would register. I even think Papyrus knows of this as he seems to be aware of the path Frisk/Chara is taking and like Sans wishes to persuade Frisk to reset and go the Pacifist route. It's just Papyrus is more direct and pacifistic in his approach.

The shopkeeper in Snowdin does say that Sans and Papyrus appeared together one day (probably taking the time machine hidden behind their house). Sans is famous for carrying Gaster Blasters as weapons, and the Undertale update shows that if you cancel a Genocide route by sparing Papyrus, you'll find a box of 'all the attacks he DIDN'T use on you' in his room, and Papyrus laments that if the Annoying Dog hadn't stolen his Special Attack you'd get "Blasted".
So Sans and Papyrus are both time travelers, and are carrying technology with Gaster's name on it. And Mr. G seems to be suffering from ghost-itis. Sans, Papyrus, and Wingding Gaster are the only three characters named after Fonts, and Sans and Papyrus are likely the ones Gaster referred to when he asked "What do you two think?" These characters have clearly met before, and I doubt it all ended in smiles and cheer.
