Plot[]
Jake is a nine-year-old boy who has a PNET. He's been fighting it for three years now, but he is severely weakened and spends most of his days bedridden and under the care of Margie, a nanny hired by his father, Evan, three years ago. His mother was killed four years ago, and Evan couldn't be around due to being in the military. Margie, meanwhile, didn't get her internship and was in need of money, so she took the job. However, she began to love Jake as a son and is staying for as long as possible. She always carries a baby monitor around just in case. Evan will occasionally call and talk to Jake, as well as catching up with Margie.
Every night at bedtime after Margie turns out the lights, Jake talks to Simon, a "friend" of his who lives in the small cabinet in Jake's room. Every night Simon asks what Jake had done that day. The first time they meet, Jake talks about the mundanity of life stuck in bed, to which Simon clarifies that he wants to know what "the real Jake" did. Jake then makes up stories based on things he had wished he could have done, which Simon says he did as well. Jake has never seen Simon, since Simon has told him he can only open the cabinet once he is well enough to walk.
Margie worries constantly for Jake. One day, Margie finds their neighbor Gillian running around in the sprinkler late at night, and Gillian has her join her to help relieve her of her stress. The next day, Jake’s friend Brandon convinces him to sneak out of the house and go to the arcade while Margie is preoccupied. Brandon tries to help Jake make it to a wagon he brought along, but eventually Jake collapses and vomits, alerting Margie and Gillian. They help him sit next to a tree, and Jake explains to Margie that he thought he could be the real Jake.
That night, Jake tells Simon about the day the real Jake had at the arcade with Brandon. It is revealed that Evan, still overseas, is “Simon.” Margie will call Evan and, using a voice distorted to sound like a child, he speaks through a hidden baby monitor in Jake’s cabinet. It’s Evan’s idea, believing Jake imagining himself well will help him recover. After Jake falls asleep, Margie quietly enters the room and begins working on her project. Within Jake’s cabinet is a doll meant to represent the real Jake. When Jake talks to Simon, Margie will take notes and add physical details to the Real Jake Doll, such as a chocolate stain and pizza sauce around the mouth. The idea is that, when Jake is finally well enough, he will find the doll and see all of the things the real Jake did while sick Jake was getting well. Evan believes that, if you pour enough love and intention into an object, it will have life.
One day, while Jake and Margie are playing a board game, Jake gets frustrated by his double vision and messes the game up in anger. Margie manages to help calm him down, and when Jake says he loves her Margie begins to cry. Later, Margie learns from Dr. Bederman that the oncology team is stopping treatment. He offers as much support as possible and suggests moving Jake to hospice if he becomes too much, but Margie tells the doctor that won’t happen. This news makes Margie realize how much she’s come to love this family.
One day, while Margie and Gillian are baking chocolate chip cookies, Margie receives a phone call from Evan’s brother, Michael. He reveals that an IED hit the vehicle Evan was in and killed him. As executor of Evan’s will, Michael informs Margie that Evan had named her Jake’s legal guardian, and left her the house and some savings. Margie is crushed by the news and, unsure of the best way to tell Jake and knowing that Simon no longer exists, reveals to Jake that she had heard him talking to Simon and that he wouldn’t be able to visit that night, disappointing Jake. Margie also comes to realize that she had fallen in love with Evan.
That night, Margie wakes up to the sound of voices coming from the baby monitor, but when she reaches Jake's room the voices stop and, not wanting to disturb Jake, goes back to bed. In the morning, Jake is worse than ever. She tries to comfort him, but Jake says he doesn't want to pretend anymore, and he goes back to sleep. Margie decides, with comforting guidance from Gillian, to have Jake moved into hospice care. When the ambulance arrives, Gillian leads them to Jake's room, but Margie immediately knows upon seeing his body that he has died, which the hospice nurse confirms. Margie and Gillian say goodbye, and everyone in the room fails to notice the little cabinet door wide open.
Speculation[]
"I was the first! I have seen everything!"
This section archives a lot of theories and speculation, which usually occurs from pre-release media, or just things that are still unknown, so please keep that in mind while reading. The page will continue to be updated with the most accurate information as more solid evidence is supplied. |
- It is heavily implied that Jake possesses the Real Jake Doll after he died. He presumably escaped from the cabinet and happened to end up in Phineas Taggart's lab to be the Stitchwraith's mask. His spirit would then inhabit the Stitchwraith. This is a similar situation to Andrew, who possessed Fetch and was attached to the Stitchwraith, who later inhabited it. However, Jake is implied to only possess the mask area while Andrew possessed Fetch's battery pack. This is supported by the fact that only Jake can see while Andrew maintains the power of the animatronic.
- Jake's last name may be McNally, since a character named Jake McNally appeared in the story Fetch, which also takes place in the same universe as the Stitchwraith Stingers.
- Some fans believe that Jake's uncle, Michael, is a reference or parallel to Michael Afton. This is because he is wealthy and is said to act "robotic."
- Some also believe Jake's uncle is Michael Afton, thus making Jake an Afton. Under this theory, Jake's father, Evan, is the Frights continuity version of the Crying Child, and that the Bite of '83 simply never happened. Some have further theorized that, if Jake is the Jake McNally from Fetch, Evan could have changed their name since William Afton was known to be a serial killer to the public, (as Larson calls him the killer numerous times, indicating he was exposed at some point), similar to how Michael takes aliases like Mike Schmidt in the games.
