The Rat's actor, Five Nights at Candy's 3

The Rat, also known as RAT, is the main antagonist of the Five Nights at Candy's series, acting as the main antagonist of Five Nights at Candy's and Five Nights at Candy's 2.

The Rat was one of the titular mascots of the Rat & Cat Theater alongside the Cat. As explored in Five Nights at Candy's 3, the two were originally suits worn by actors. The Rat has facilitated the murder of the twins at the Rowboatics Corp. factory and orchestrated the closure of Candy's Burgers & Fries in 1993.

The real name for the Rat's actor is unknown, both when it comes to the mascot character of the Rat and the spirit possessing the robot. In Five Nights at Candy's 3, the Rats actor's name is shown as "#####", meaning that it is most likely 5 letters long.

Physical Appearance[]

The Rat is a brownish-tan wirelock animatronic, with an almost featureless body. He has a tall head with empty eye-sockets and two large rat ears, his left being torn leaving only the wired frame. He has a line stitched up running along the middle of his face, which ends at his snout which has a black nose. The Rat has crooked, uneven teeth that are beige in color. His torso is segmented up into three parts for more natural movement. His endoskeleton has the most detailing out of any other animatronic in the Five Nights at Candy's saga, featuring cuboid metallic frames that are held together with balls and wires for movement. His hands and feet are bare, and screw-like pins extend all across his body. He has tears across his forehead and chest, and loose wires at his jaw and feet.

In Five Nights at Candy's 2, the Rat's appearance is slightly more withered. While his head mostly remains untouched, the "screws" around his damaged left ear are now gone. His suit has withered to the point that the covering on his left forearm, right calf, and the half part of the left calf are missing. His stomach has an additional hole.

Functionality[]

The Rat is a wirelock suit, originally mascot costumes created to be worn by actors at the Rat & Cat Theater. After the deaths of the actors, the Rat and the Cat were retrofitted into regular animatronics with endoskeletons inside.

Personality[]

When portrayed by his actor, the Rat is generally kind to Mary and the children. Despite his pleasent attitude, the Rat is known to be zealous as he became enraged when one boy criticized the condition of the theater's games. In Five Nights at Candy's 3's Night 5 cutscene, the Rat's actor is revealed to be an alcoholic and gets in a altercation with the Puppeteer over his condition. The Rat is also shown to have somewhat of an ego, saying to the Puppeteer, "Don't be jealous that I've got talent and YOU DON'T!" However, it is unknown if this prideful nature was preexisting or the result of inebriation.

Following his death, the actor's spirit has become consumed by a vengeful rage; the Rat's once joyous demeanor has been replaced by a desire to inflict pain upon those who encounter him. The Rat is shown to be very opportunistic, as he will take advantage of any chance to harm another entity the moment it presents itself, as seen when Mary's brother was within arms-length of the theater's stage or when Chester unlocked the storage room door the Rat was kept in. The Rat is also shown to be sadistic, as he murders his victims in an aggressive and gruesome manner, with one police officer describing the murder scene of Marylin Schmidt resembling that of a bear attack in a newspaper article presented in the Rat/Cat game over screen of Five Nights at Candy's 2.

The only being the Rat does not show any hostility towards is the Cat. The two are shown to be inseparable, rarely ever seen alone, to the point that if the two are physically separated, each one will manifest as a shadowy visage at the present location of the other.

History[]

The Rat was created sometime before 1961 as a mascot costume for the Rat & Cat Theater. He was played by a male actor who, alongside the Cat and the Puppeteer, would put on shows and play games with the children.

One day in 1961, the Rat comes into work drunk and invites a group of children to play hide-and-seek with him, with everyone except Mary Schmidt finds a place to hide. The Rat notices her enter the open "Staff Only" room and runs in after her, telling her to come out. The Puppeteer enters the room, demanding the Rat to take off his costume and go back home, as he came to work inebriated. The Puppeteer tries to take off the Rat's mask, but the Rat drunkenly fights back. Eventually, the Rat manages to strangle the Puppeteer but he pushes the Rat towards the table, causing the actor to fall and smash his head on the table's edge, paralyzing him and leading him to bleed out to death. After the Cat enters and tries to call the police, he strangled by the Puppeteer and suffocates. After murdering the two actors, the Puppeteer calls the police and tells them that he found both the actors dead.

Sometime after the murders, the Rowboatics Corp. Factory is opened and retrofits the Rat and Cat costumes into animatronics for the Rat & Cat Theater's reopening. However, both animatronics are soon possessed by the vengeful spirits of the dead actors. A year later at the theater's grand reopening, the Rat and the Cat are performing for a crowd of children. Mary's brother gets close to the Rat, leading to the animatronic injuring him. The injury was non-fatal, but the theater was closed anyways. The Rat and the Cat were sent back to the factory and were used as the base for newer animatronic designs.

In 1964, following Old Candy and Blank's creation, the Rat is sat between them on a conveyor belt. RAT soon activates and begins to wander the factory before destroying the security camera watching him. The Rat then manages to sneak into Candy's Burgers & Fries by hiding in a dilivery shipment of animatronics sent to the restaurant. Due to not originally being part of the expected shipment and finding no use in him, the Rat was placed in a backroom and stayed unused for the remainder of the restaurant's run. At one point in 1987, the Rat's incorporeal form assists the Cat with murdering a pair of twin children at the Rowboatics Corp. factory by disabling the securiy cameras while the Cat shoves the twins into a conveyor belt during the manufacturing of Candy and Cindy. This leads to the two new animatronics becoming possessed by the twins' spirits.

One night in 1989, Chester discovered a key to his room and went to unlock it. The Rat subsequently attacked and dismembered him, leading to Chester being decommissioned. The Rat also murdered a nightguard in 1993, which led to the restaurant being shut down and the animatronics being sent back to the factory.

The Rat reactivates in 2007, after the young Marylin Schmidt breaks into the factory and stays there for six nights. The Rat is only active on Night 6 and the bonus Night 8 alongside the Cat, and they are the only animatronics active for the whole night in both nights. After Night 6, the factory burns to the ground; it can be assumed that the Rat and all the other animatronics were destroyed in this event. With the animatronic body of the Rat destroyed, the spirit of the Rat's actor finally passes on to the afterlife.

Speculation[]

"I was the first! I have seen everything!"

This section archives a lot of theories and speculation, which usually occurs from pre-release media, or just things that are still unknown, so please keep that in mind while reading. The page will continue to be updated with the most accurate information as more solid evidence is supplied.

  • It is theorized that the Rat's official name would have been Randy, which would rhyme with the Cat's name being Candy. This is supported by a girl in the Night 4 end-of-night minigame in Five Nights at Candy's 3 commenting that the two characters' names would likely rhyme.
