Plot[]
Edwin Murray is a 24-year-old Fazbear Entertainment engineer. When he was around four years old, he began taking apart his mother’s small appliances to understand how they worked. By the time he was eight, he knew he wanted to change the world through building machines. Edwin started his company in the early ‘70s, a time when people wanted more time to play and were opening their minds. Edwin also met a woman named Fiona, and the two married as soon as they graduated. During this time, Edwin got his first patent on a robotic vacuum cleaner that sold well enough to fund a good life for him and start his business right out of school. A year later, Edwin bought an abandoned lace factory and an old Queen Anne mansion that he and Fiona planned to restore for the family they were about to start. However, Fiona died giving birth to their son, David, and Edwin took time away from his work to care for him.
Unfortunately, Edwin’s machines didn’t have the longevity customers wanted and sales began to drop off. Unable to address the complaints of customers due to David’s constant need for attention, his business began to fail. After Fiona’s passing, Edwin realized he couldn’t manage both properties, so he moved into the factory and converted areas into a living space. Eventually Edwin’s finances ran dry, and he had no choice but to sell his company to Fazbear Enterprises. For the past year and a half, Edwin has been creating animatronic characters for Fazbear Entertainment, having made eighteen so far. It’s now early March, and the now four-year-old David is more needy than ever. Edwin decides to create a robot that will entertain David and allow Edwin to concentrate on work.
For the next twenty-two days, Edwin works nonstop on his project using parts from the machinery in the factory. He is able to create a torso, arms, and head for the endoskeleton and moves on to building its computer by stealing hardware from his abandoned projects. For the programming, Edwin uses a combination of Pascal and C to create a thinking mind that learns through mimicking. Edwin gets this idea from how David’s bed was built to mimic Tiger, David’s favorite plush toy. Once finished, Edwin shows the endoskeleton to David and names it Mimic based on the name of the program, Mimic1. When Mimic is turned on, he mimics David’s actions. David is quick to learn how Mimic works and begins to teach it how to play games like patty-cake.
Over the next two weeks, David teaches Mimic more things. Because Mimic cannot speak, David teaches it special hand movements to communicate. Edwin keeps tinkering with Mimic to make sure David doesn’t get bored, allowing it to move more. Edwin is impressed by how fast Mimic is learning. While Edwin works, David and Mimic color and toss a ball around. Mimic is always with David, including the diner table where he watches David put leftovers away. David often carries Tiger around, causing Mimic to curve his arms in a way that suggests he has his own. So, while Edwin is working on a pirate fox, David and Mimic work together to create a makeshift tiger plush out of lace and string. Edwin is amazed that Mimic is not only mimicking but also responding, and feels even more confident in leaving David in his care.
A few days later, Edwin has to remind David to put his pajamas away in the closet, and Mimic watches David’s every move. A few hours later, David and Mimic get into Fazbear Entertainment costumes and play in them, getting them dirty. Edwin is upset and has them play quietly. They decide to draw odd drawings surrounded by strange markings on construction paper Edwin had given them a few days ago. That night, Edwin decides to tinker with Mimic more so he can move more fluidly. The next day, David runs outside as Edwin is getting breakfast ready. By the time Edwin runs after him, David has chased a ball into the road and gets hit by a white van.[1] The world around Edwin begins to blur together as he mourns the death of his son.
For the next two weeks, Edwin disappears into a fugue. When he comes out of it, he only remembers a few things, including having lived through burying his only son. Edwin considers deactivating Mimic, but doesn’t have the energy to. As he continues working on a blue bunny endoskeleton, Mimic climbs up onto the table with his makeshift tiger, reminding Edwin of having fought Mimic over David’s Tiger. Mimic sets his tiger aside and uses the hand movements David taught him to ask for ice cream. Edwin snaps at the painful reminder of David, and he uses a metal rod to repeatedly strike Mimic. He badly damages his face, spine, rib cage, arms, and pincers. Eventually Edwin runs out of strength and his anger turns into regret as he cries.
It’s now January and Dominic, Harry, and Glen arrive at the factory. After Edwin Murray disappeared a few months prior, the property reverted back to Fazbear Entertainment due to breach of contract. Dominic is only given the vague instructions to clean up the mess Murray left and make repairs. Due to a paperwork mix-up with the power company, the power is out. The door closes behind them as they explore. They come across costumes of Freddy Fazbear, Chica, Foxy, Bonnie, and two bright pink and yellow-green court jesters. Unsure of what to do, Dominic explores the second floor while Glen and Harry investigate the third. Dominic comes across a strange smell and a fridge with a reddish-brown stain near the vent. He decides to check later and investigates a bedroom, finding a Fazbear Enterprises-issued satchel like the one he has.
Inside the satchel is a tape recorder that Dominic listens to as he explores more. He learns that a team was sent to the factory a month prior and they were trapped inside by the door closing. They figured they’re supposed to repair leftover projects they found on the first level, but first they made repairs to the building. They found and repaired a generator, which Glen and Harry also happen to find and fix. After, they began to examine the condition of the endoskeletons and made adjustments. The tape ends with the man explaining that, after a short break, they will be completing an advanced endoskeleton that lacks legs and isn’t moving. When the tape ends, Dominic meets up with Glen and Harry and they discover they’re trapped too. Harry notices that one of the jesters is gone, and Glen suggests they investigate the smell.
Dominic, Glen, and Harry are disgusted by the sight of a broken down and compacted corpse inside the fridge. Dominic remembers a similar smell coming from a closet, and Harry stays behind as Dominic and Glen investigate. They turn on the light to find a man hanging from a clothes hanger with a rod speared through his chest and his entrails slopping over his belt. They hear Harry scream and see something in the jester costume pulling out Harry’s brain. Glen grabs Dominic and they hide. Glen decides they need a weapon to fight back and try looking for one, but Dominic notices the discarded jester costume. A fuchsia-and-white mushroom costume grabs Glen and rams his head into a brick wall, shredding his entire body from the rib cage up. Dominic flees to the third floor and tries to build a machine to use as a weapon. He retrieves the other employee’s satchel, noticing that Harry’s body is gone and the mushroom man costume has been discarded. When he makes it back to the third floor, a rotting grayish-purple lion costume stands up and slams Dominic to the floor. It then reaches up through his solar plexus and grabs his trachea from the inside, pulling it out.
