Shadow Rat is the ghost of RAT and the shadowy counterpart to Monster Rat, first appearing in the Deepscape and acting as the main and sole enemy in Shadow Challenge.

Physical Appearance

Shadow Rat retains the same appearance as Monster Rat, with a dark purple coloration that appears black in darker lighting. His teeth are highlighted with the white, distinct color compared to the rest of the body. His metal features are also significantly darker. Harkening back to the original RAT, he has no eyes with the exception of his jumpscare in Shadow Challenge, which gives him foggy white pupils.

Deepscape

Shadow Rat is the most prominent threat within the Deepscape, chasing after Mary Schmidt if she steps foot outside of the light paths and into the abyss. Shadow Rat will chase Mary when catching sight of her, but is only able to chase her in the darkness. If Mary manages to escape to the light paths, Shadow Rat won't be able to catch her. When caught, Shadow Rat will jumpscare the player.

Shadow Challenge

Shadow Rat appears in the Shadow Challenge as the only enemy. Shadow Rat functions the same as Monster Rat, except he is much more aggressive.

When running to the closet, drawer, or the door, Shadow Rat is incredibly fast, and will move to another location almost instantly after the player wards him off, giving the player very little time to use the Tape Player.

Once Shadow Rat enters the room, the player must shine light in his eyes, much like Monster Rat. However, Shadow Rat is much faster and trickier, giving the player less time to react. Additionally, Shadow Rat's standoff will last much longer compared to Monster Rat's.

Once Shadow Rat enters the bed, the player needs to locate where he is in the bed, and then wait for him to come out from the opposite side much like Monster Rat. However, compared to Monster Rat, Shadow Rat is much, much, stricter, and if the player waits even a tad bit too long, Shadow Rat will end their game.

Additionally, Shadow Rat can corrupt the player's Tape Player, so the player must quickly fix it.

Generally, efficiency must be the player's main focus when dealing with Shadow Rat.

• Shadow Rat bears similarity to Nightmare, in which his jumpscare is very different than the rest of the characters.
• As confirmed by Emil Macko, Shadow Rat is the Rat's spirit, haunting Mary's nightmares in a non-corporeal form.
