List of Minor Characters[]
Amber[]
- Not what you were looking for? See Amber (disambiguation).
Amber was Stanley's girlfriend for more than two years. Amber worked at a grocery store, and Stanley would continue to come to the store just to see her. She begins to realize Stanley likes her and asks him why he hasn't asked her out, to which he does and she says yes. Amber loved cooking shows and would try out new recipes like spare ribs with plum sauce, chicken adobo, and spaghetti carbonara. She and Stanley would cook dinner together and sit across from each other at his little kitchen table as they spoke about their days, with Amber always having funny stories about things that happened during her shift. After dinner, the two would cuddle on the couch and watch TV until Stanley had to leave for work. On Stanley's nights off, they'd go out to Luigi's Spaghetti House or Wong's Palace, see a movie, or go bowling.
While Amber was his first serious girlfriend, Stanley didn't feel emotionally or financially ready for engagement or marriage. Amber eventually feels that the relationship was stagnant and breaks up with him two weeks prior to the events of the story. Later, at Stanley's nephew's birthday party, he learns that Amber had already moved on and is dating the manager of Snack Space. Stanley has a nightmare where Amber is on a date with the man at Luigi's Spaghetti House. Stanley eventually decides to write her a letter, reminiscing on the day they first met and apologizing for not having been as exciting as she wanted. He explains that he's sick and if she gets the note it's because something terrible has happened. He ends the note wishing her as much happiness as she brought him.
Katie[]
- Not what you were looking for? See Kat (disambiguation).
Katie is the server at the City Diner. She's around Stanley's age with blue eyes, and Stanley thinks she is pretty. Katie is taking some classes at the community college now that her son has started preschool. Ever since his breakup, Katie is one of the few people Stanley talks to. After his encounter with the first Minireena, Stanley arrives at the City Diner and Katie asks if he wants his usual. Stanley asks for a menu instead, and Katie is impressed when he orders something healthy. When Stanley doesn't finish his meal Katie comments on it, and when told he has a sore throat she talks about how others at her kid's preschool have gotten sick and hopes Stanley hasn't caught something.
The next day, Katie notices Stanley's scratchy voice and worries for him. She suggests seeing a doctor, recommending a nearby drugstore with a little walk-in clinic that she went to last month to treat an ear infection, but Stanley refuses to see a doctor. Katie tells Stanley it's actually run by a nurse but he still refuses, so Katie decides to give him a large orange juice on the house. After discovering there's multiple Minireenas, Stanley plans out his recovery and decides he'll ask Katie out.
Katie's Son[]
Katie's unnamed son is the reason she's taking community college classes, having just entered preschool. When Stanley tells Katie's he's feeling ill, Katie explains that there's some sort bugs going around school getting kids and teachers sick.
Harold[]
Harold is dating Stanley's mother. Stanley says he's a nice guy. She meet him a year and a half after Stanley's father died, and they've enjoyed each others company ever since. They go out to dinner every Friday night, and on Sundays they'll either go to the part of the mall for walks, holding hands while they do.
Unnamed Supervisor[]
Stanley's unnamed supervisor is a strange little bald man with a bony little hand and wearing a too-large suit. At the job interview, he fidgeted and seemingly had a hard time meeting Stanley's eyes. The man informs Stanley that his job is to make sure nothing gets out, telling him that the job isn't like others while looking at papers. He then asks when Stanley can start, looking in his general direction but not meeting his eyes. He gives Stanley an almost smile when learning he can start as soon as he's needed, explaining the prior security guard had a massive heart attack and passed suddenly. He comments that we never know how much time we're given, making Stanley think of his recently deceased father. At the end of the interview, Stanley shakes his hand. Stanley never sees the man again.
Unnamed Preschoolers[]
Unnamed preschoolers swarm Stanley when he goes to Max's fifth birthday party in his uniform. They excitedly ask if he chases bad guys and tell Stanley that his badge is shiny.
Manager of the Snack Space[]
Amber starts dating the manager of the Snack Space right after breaking up with Stanley. He is said to be tall and fit, as well as being a sharp dresser. Todd sees Amber on a date with the manager while picking up a takeout order at Luigi's and notices that he owns a sports car. Stanley never meets the manager, only seeing him as a handsome, well-dressed man on a date with Amber in a nightmare he has.
Unnamed Elderly Man[]
An unnamed elderly man comes to the City Diner every morning. Stanley notices that he's always alone, reading a newspaper and drinking his coffee long after having finished his breakfast. Stanley wonders if he'll end up like the old man one day.
Unnamed Nurse[]
An unnamed nurse that works at a walk-in clinic. She's a blonde, maternal woman said to be around Stanley's actual mother's age. After Stanley gets increasingly worse, he caves and decides to visit her. As soon as she sees Stanley for the first time she makes a comment on how terrible he looks and takes leads him to a tiny exam room in the back of the drugstore. She sticks a thermometer in his ear and discovers he doesn't have a fever, but still thinks it's best to swab his throat and test for strep. Using a long-handled Q-tip, the nurse finds blood in his throat. After running some tests, she finds that he doesn't have strep but thinks there's some sort of infection. She writes Stanley a prescription for some antibiotics and recommends seeing a doctor if things don't get better.
