Robert Stanton is the protagonist of The Cliffs, the first story in the book of the same name.
History
Robert is the father of his son, Tyler. His wife, Anna, died during childbirth. As a result, he dedicates most of his life to taking care of Tyler, knowing that he would never be enough for him. One day at the store, he purchases Tag-Along Freddy to keep watch over his son. He realizes that his life is easier knowing that something was keeping track of Tyler.
On Saturday, he let Tag-Along Freddy watch over Tyler as he played in the sandbox while he took a phone call. When he comes back, Tyler is missing. Freddy sends an unhelpful message and Robert calls the police. He answers some of the police's questions, all while berating himself for being a bad father.
As the investigation continues, Robert questions his own life and how everything went wrong. Tag-Along Freddy constantly pesters him to go to the Cliffs, a location where many people commit suicide. Robert attempts to stay calm, but stress and anger get the best of him. He tries multiple methods in destroying Tag-Along Freddy out of frustration; from burning the bear to running it over with his car.
Believing that he has nothing left to live for, Robert takes Tag-Along Freddy with him as he makes his way to the Cliffs. He prepares to jump, accepting his fate, but he remembers Anna. She loved life, and she, nor Tyler would want him to throw his away; they would want him to cherish life and make the most of it, finding the best in everything. Robert overcomes his emotions, throwing Tag-Along Freddy off the cliff instead. He then hears someone crying, realizing that it's Tyler. He wasn't taken away by a van, instead getting lost after chasing a dog. Robert saves Tyler from the hole in the mountain he's trapped in, and the two embrace. Father and son, now reunited, watch the sunrise; the dawn of a new day.
