“Hello? Hello hello? Well, if you're hearing this, then chances are you've made a very poor career choice.” |
Ralph, better known as "The Phone Guy,"[1] is a supporting character in the Five Nights at Freddy's series and the deuteragonist of Five Nights at Freddy's as well as its sequel game. He was an employee who worked for the establishment Fazbear Entertainment, Inc.. He also serves as the protagonist of The Week Before from the interactive novel series.
It was once disputed among players if Ralph was actually an ally, however it was later revealed that his tendency to downplay the situation comes from a blind loyalty to Fazbear Entertainment and a deep love of children's entertainment. When he himself began living through the dangerous situations, he recorded a final set of messages with hints for survival so the company would not delete his warnings.
Personality[]
In the first game, Ralph is somewhat nonchalant, with no official explanation as to why. Throughout the game, he does his best to inform the player that there's "nothing to worry about," despite the obvious danger of being caught by the animatronics. It is unknown if he is obligated to lie to the guards, or if he is simply trying to make Mike feel better.
He seems to be very hesitant and awkward at times, often stuttering and laughing nervously, implying that he might be worried about the possibility of someone hearing his warnings and advice regarding the animatronics. Of course, it is also likely that he is generally anxious and on edge due to the thought of imminent danger on his conscience.
Despite his semi awkward demeanor, he’s remarkably good at keeping his cool in situations of stress, including the moments directly preceding his implied death on Night 4. In Five Nights at Freddy's: The Week Before, this is further demonstrated through his encounters with the animatronics. At times, it even seems as if he is more annoyed with their behavior than frightened, though he is still fully aware of the danger they pose to his life.
In the second game, Ralph is seemingly not concerned at all about the animatronics being hostile. This is likely because he was working the dayshift during the time, and did not truly understand the danger until taking over the night shift. The only time he ever shows a sense of urgency in his voice is on Night 6's phone call, but even then, he tries hard to maintain his cool. He makes a point to give the player advice for surviving the first few nights, but also keeps insisting that the restaurant is dedicated to employee safety, and that "there is nothing to worry about". He's also very friendly and talkative, often sharing his thoughts with the protagonist.
In the third game, in which Ralph's voice is heard in the training tapes, he's much more formal and less expressive, as he is speaking as an instructor.
In Five Nights at Freddy's: The Week Before, Ralph is shown to have genuine love for Freddy Fazbear's, taking pride in his work. He is simply happy to come into work knowing that he is helping create family memories and putting smiles on the faces of children. Ralph's love for Freddy's is so strong, in fact, that he seems unable to cope with the various tragedies that have occurred at the establishment. Ralph uses denial as a survival mechanism, often disregarding or downplaying some of the horrible things he sees during his shifts. Despite this, he knows, deep down, that Freddy's is a place of pain. He even has a passing thought about Freddy's burning down, thinking that it "probably wouldn't be such a bad thing".
Ralph is also a caring father to his daughter, Coppelia.
