“My work is focused on my hypothesis that you can take a saturation of agony, add any kind of intelligence—even an artificial one—and they will combine together to transmute the energy of emotion into the energy of physical action. This, I believe, is what explains what people call 'haunted' objects.” |
Dr. Phineas Taggart was a robotics scientist and a creator of the Stitchwraith from the Fazbear Frights series.
Physical Appearance[]
Dr. Phineas Taggart is very neat in his appearance, not wanting to appear sloppy despite being retired and supposedly ugly. He wears a pristine white lab coat that he pulls the tail out from under him and smooths it when sitting, a narrow red tie, and a gray dress shirt with a stiff collar. Phineas keeps his graying hair trimmed short and his round homely face clean shaven.

History[]
Dr. Phineas studied the concepts of energy and human emotions. He believes that humans can put up a "protective energy shield" against negative intentions. His most important research on emotions is "agony", which he believed to be the strongest emotion out of all others, enough to affiliate into an inanimate object to bring it to life. For his experiments, he bought "haunted" objects, such as torture devices from online auctions. He dislikes the term though, he'd rather believe them to be "energized by agony” as opposed to the objects being possessed by ghosts.
Every week, Phineas receives a new shipment of emotionally charged objects. One day, he received an endoskeleton for his biggest project yet, along with some other new energized items. Dr. Phineas gets to work on the endoskeleton. He first ripped the head of the Real Jake Doll, a drawn-on white doll, and placed it on top of the endoskeleton. Then, he tore apart Fetch, a scrapped animatronic dog, and put its battery pack onto the endoskeleton. Once the agonized endoskeleton began to move, its metal fingers attempted to touch Phineas. Its battery started to glow red, and Phineas sensed danger and tried to create a mental shield. He died, feeling excruciating pain and his consciousness annihilated.
Phineas' eyeless, mummified corpse was later discovered by Ruben, who was worried since Phineas never missed a meal at his truck. He called the police, who investigated, and stated that they suspected some sort of electrical discharge that killed Phineas.
The creation Phineas unleashed upon the world went on to become an urban legend, being seen by several people collecting searching in random places to random items.
Other Experiments[]
Items Infused with Agony[]
Phineas' main set of experiments is centered on understanding the essence which he refers to as agony, which he has found infused in what most other people call "haunted" items (however, he makes the clear distinction that he himself would not call these items "haunted", as that would imply that they are possessed by spirits or ghosts). Simon and Fetch, which he used to create the Stitchwraith, were examples of these types of items which he collected; however, there were many others he had previously collected, as Simon and Fetch came in a weekly shipment he received containing these agony-infused items (all supposedly from online auctions).
Other agony-infused items that Phineas has collected include:
- A rack (torture device)
- A head crusher (torture device)
- A Wheel (torture device)
- A Judas Cradle (torture device)
- A piece of toast with Madonna's image on it
- Nonmechanical dolls with eyes that open on their own
- A rocking chair that rocks on its own
- A decorative wall mirror that watched a man murder his entire family
- An empty jack-in-the-box
Phineas keeps all of these items in what he refers to as his Protected Room in his private laboratory, sealed off with a pneumatic-sealed door that requires a security code to enter so that neither mold spores nor anyone but him may enter (the mold spores which Phineas claims have "errant energies" that would interfere with that of the agonized items).
In the Main Laboratory, Phineas also keeps an EDA, an EEG, an REG, an MRI, and X-ray machines, which he claims to use to measure the emotional energy infused into these items as well as others.
Phineas also notes while infusing Stitchwraith with agony that the process of transferring energy into objects occurs at a frequency invisible to the human eye, but could be seen very dimly using a blue light in complete darkness. However, blue light tended to distort the field (which is why he opts to leave the lights on and not bother when infusing Stitchwraith).
Flowers[]
Phineas keeps a small garden of exotic flowers, which he believes are "nature's purest vessels for emotion" (as compared to and more so than water, which he claims other scientists believe to be the purest vessel). His garden is very particular, and consists of lobster-claw shaped yellow and orange Heliconia, symmetrical lavender Lotus flowers, red clusters of flowering ginger, and brighter red passionflowers (which remind him of blood-soaked starfish).
Dr. Taggart reports being particularly drawn to the passionflower due to him believing that it holds a "vibration so pure and innocent that its energy could repattern conciousness". He claims to have also learned from an expert in flower essences that the passionflower repairs the ego, med the superego, and facilitate enlightenment. Phineas strives and feels that he is close to being in tune with his own energy enough to match the resonance of the passionflower just before the time of his death.
Ice Crystal Growing[]
Phineas reportedly tested an experiment that other scientists had done in order to see the effectiveness of using hurt and anger rather than love to grow ice crystals. Other scientists reported that infusing water with love would make ice crystals grow quickly and beautifully, and used this to justify that love was the strongest emotion; however, Dr. Phineas Taggart replicated the experiment himself using his own typically well-hidden hurt and anger to grow them. He reported ice crystals growing in a hideous pattern in a matter of seconds using his methodology, which he believes to invalidate the other scientists' hypothesis that love is the strongest emotion: rather, Phineas feels that there are stronger emotions than love that can affect objects (particularly agony, leading to his main line of experiments) due to this experiment.
Trivia[]
- Phineas is briefly mentioned in 1:35 A.M. while Delilah is searching for information about her Ella doll, connecting the two stories.[1]
- He is also mentioned in the epilogue of Bunny Call where Detective Larson is investigating on the case, and in the epilogue of Friendly Face, with a photo of him and Dr. Talbert together appearing in the latter's apartment.
- Phineas is very clean and has an aversion to dust/dirt; possibly to the point of being a germophobe/having mysophobia.
- Phineas may not have had a very good relationship with his mother, as he distinctly remembers her telling him that he was "ugly" and that it "wasn't an excuse to be a slob".
- This may have contributed and/or led to his constant desire to always be clean and presentable/his fear of dirt and dust
- Phineas is very proud of his collection of items that are "energized by agony", and takes time daily to admire them in his Protected Room. It is explicitly stated that "he love[s] each and every one of them".
- All of the particular flowers mentioned in the flower experiment symbolize immortality, death and rebirth, eternal youth, and living forever in flower language.
- Based on how most of the other major characters and Phineas' mother treat him, it can be assumed that Phineas does not have many friends; however, Flynn (the delivery truck driver that visits weekly) seems to be quite fond of him.
- Flynn in particular seems to be the closest friend that Phineas has, as he is the only person that Phineas relaxes around, allows to call him a nickname, and jokes around with of all of the characters he interacts with. Flynn is also rather impressed by Phineas' "mad scientist laugh" which Phineas claims to have been practicing for him. Though Phineas explicitly claims to have "never felt real joy", he does state that his moment spent with Flynn receiving his newest shipment of items "had to be close[st]" he's ever come to it.
