POPGOES Arcade: Fighting Chance is an upcoming free content update for POPGOES Arcade. It was first teased on May 16, 2024, and its title and logo was revealed on June 12, 2024.

Summary[]

"Fighting Chance" is an upcoming FREE major update for POPGOES Arcade on Steam. My final attempt at perfecting the original vision for the game, giving those who enjoyed the game a reason to play it again, and those who didn't enjoy it a reason to give it another try.[1]

Features[]

  • Addition of a currently unnamed NPC that the player will be able to interact with early on in the game in order to receive Battle Gifts.
    • Battle Gifts will introduce one of nine random status effects into the battle (three positive, three neutral, and three negative), but will prevent players from escaping that battle. Battle Gifts will only appear in 50% of battles. 2 additional effects of each alignment are added during the Machinist DLC. Winning battles with each effect awards the player extra coins depending on the difficulty of the effect.
  • Escaping will be reworked to be immediately accessible at the start of the game rather than requiring the player to purchase the level 2 Hook upgrade. However, the chances of escaping are not guaranteed and a failed escape will use up the player's turn.
    • The chances of escape are determined by the strength of the enemy. Common enemies can be escaped from 50% of the time, uncommon enemies can be escaped from 33% of the time, and rare enemies can be escaped from 17% of the time.
  • Various modifications have been made to the battle and dialogue systems in order to make them more efficient.
  • A stamp system has been added to make coins more useful outside of the stat upgrade system.
    • Buying an item rewards the player with 1/3 of a stamp. After collecting enough stamps, the player will be able to use their collected stamps in order to purchase consumable items. Stamps cannot be used to purchase upgrades. Acorn and Attack Up items cost 1 stamp, Fruit and Defense Up items cost 2 stamps, and Pizza and Shield items cost 3 stamps.
  • The Money Boot unlockable has been replaced with the Quick Pocket unlockable, which will allow players to use one "buff" item (e.g Attack Up) at the start of a battle without wasting a turn.
  • The fast travel "Tunnel" system has been reworked so the player can travel to any shop or any inn at any time rather than to holes throughout the map.
  • The achievements system has been reworked to allow players to access achievements directly inside of the game rather than the Steam client for parity on ported versions of the game.
    • The player will be notified in-game when they obtain an achievement.
    • 5 new achievements have also been added to each section of the game.
    • The Dethroned Ultra achievement has been adjusted to allow the player to purchase the abilities prior to fighting Freddy, but still preventing them from using the abilities in batter.
  • The in-game economy has been adjusted in order to make the money system more manageable and balanced across each area of the game.
    • Enemies in the West Forest drop five fewer coins than those in the South Forest, though enemies in the North and East Forests will drop five more.
    • The permanent upgrades to Popgoes' HP and Attack have also been adjusted to dynamically increase over the course of the game, starting at a low cost and drastically increasing in price over time.
      • This upgrade system is described as "supply and demand" in-game.
    • The costs of consumables and one-off purchases, such as Jukebox songs, have been increased.
  • Enemy spawn rates have been adjusted, causing enemies to spawn less on dirt paths or rail tracks and more elsewhere.
  • The Corruption Hotspots and Power Surges have been adjusted to force Popgoes to slow down, preventing players from accidentally leaving the areas. Background particle effects have also been added.
  • The Medal system was slightly updated, redesigning some of the medals (e.g adding a nose to Corrupted Bonnie) and adding a new medal for defeating the secret boss.
  • Bosses from POPGOES and the Dead Forest can now be re-accessed in POPGOES and The Machinist via the Bestiary.
  • The Jukebox interface was slightly redesigned to remain more visually consistent throughout each chapter of the game. Two new songs were also added.

Development[]

The Fighting Chance update was conceived when Kane and Emil, major developers of the game, considered reprogramming POPGOES Arcade in the GameMaker engine due to a variety of problems in the code of the game. Since development of ports for the game were ongoing at the time, Kane and Emil made a list of potential improvements for the game as they were developing the ports. After Clickteam offered to take over the porting process, Kane and Emil began to implement their ideas in what would become the Fighting Chance update so all possible improvements could be added to the game before it was ported to other platforms.

On May 16, 2024, Kane Carter posted on X/Twitter that productivity had skyrocketed that week, adding that it wasn't for the projects fans might have expected.[2]

On May 19, 2024, Kane Carter posted an image with blurry text and scrambled writing at the top. When decoded, it reads: "POPGOES Arcade - 2024 Goated Final Update."[3]

On May 25, 2024, Kane made a few posts talking about the update, stating that the update was codenamed "Goated Updated" and that it would get a real name eventually, and that the update was so significant that he was going to make a video/trailer for it. He added that it won't be an expansion. or a second chapter, and they aren't adding more story. The update was going to improve the general experience massively with brand new features and tweaks.[4]

On May 28, 2024, Kane posted a video featuring a new usable item/ability inside enemy battles called "Gift."[5]

On May 30, 2024, Kane Carter shared that various Steam achievement icons have been "uncensored," and one even slightly edited.[6]

On June 12, 2024, the logo and title for the update was revealed to be "Fighting Chance," adding that the full showcase of its features is coming soon.[7]

On June 22, 2024, Kane shared that the audio for the showcase had been recorded and that it'd be ~15 minutes long. He added that he's hoping to get the showcase up on YouTube on June 26 for POPGOES' 8-year anniversary. In another post, he added that Fighting Chance won't launch on June 26 and that he imagines it going live early to mid-July.[8][9]

On June 26, 2024, the showcase video went live.

On July 15, 2024, Kane revealed that Fighting Chance would be delayed until at least a few weeks after the release of MyPOPGOES on August 1, 2024, due to a few "leftover things" becoming bigger time investments than expected.[10]

On December 7, 2024, Dawko's Thankmas 2024 charity stream featured a teaser for a new puppet-like character in a POPGOES showcase.
