Summary[]

Oscar is desperate to buy the new popular Plushtrap Chaser toy, which walks in the dark but freezes in the light. However, all the stores are out of stock due to demand. Oscar sees that a customer has returned a defective Plushtrap Chaser and steals it. When he opens the box at home, the Plushtrap seems to have human eyes and teeth. The Plushtrap is turned on and chases after Oscar and his friends in his house, able to chew through doors with its unusually sharp teeth. Finally, Oscar and his friends run to a railway and Plushtrap is killed by a train. Oscar returns home and reconciliates with his mom.

Plot[]

Oscar is a sophomore in high school who just can't seem to win at life. His father contracted a fatal infection while getting a tonsillectomy, his family had to move into a cheaper neighborhood, and he spends most of his time assisting his mother at the Royal Oaks Nursing Home. Oscar learns the Plushtrap Chaser, a light-activated mechanical rabbit, is going to be on sale on Friday morning, which is an inconvenience for him and his friends Raj and Isaac. They try to make it through the school day, however Oscar is called out early to assist his mother with a patient.

When Oscar arrives at the Royal Oaks Nursing Home, he learns the patient, Mr. Devereaux, is freaking out over a cat. Oscar manages to calm Mr. Devereaux down, and the old man has Oscar sit down. He can tell Oscar is bothered by something, so Oscar tells Mr. Deveraux about the toy he wants. Mr. Deveraux speaks in metaphors, giving Oscar wisdom about how he’s always set out to do things in his life that he never gets to fulfill. He then tells Oscar that sometimes one needs to know when to go for it, even if it seems impossible, and it’s time for him to finally reach one of his goals. Mr. Deveraux falls asleep, and Oscar quickly catches up with his mother before going to leave. At the reception desk, Oscar learns that Isaac left a message for him, explaining that they’re heading for the mall.

At the mall, Oscar meets up with Raj and Isaac at the Emporium and they explain that every other store has run out, with this one having some left in the back. They reach the front of the line only to receive the disappointing announcement that they're sold out. Amongst the angry cries of customers, however, Oscar overhears a discussion between three employees regarding a returned Plushtrap Chaser that looks lifelike. Despite the damaged box, Oscar asks to buy it, but the staff refuses. The crowd begins to get more angry and Oscar takes the opportunity to snatch the box, paying for it on the way out as he and his friends run away from mall security.

Once home, they unbox it and notice that it has human-like, slightly yellow teeth and squishy, realistic eyes. They attempt to open its mouth, breaking a butter knife in the process, and eventually they replace the 9-volt battery, flip a switch under its feet, and make the room as dark as possible, but the Plushtrap doesn’t turn on. The next day the theft is reported in the news, but Oscar refuses to confess to his mother. Ashamed, Oscar spends the rest of the day in his room avoiding his friends. A few days later, Raj and Isaac confront Oscar and support his decision to return the Plushtrap Chaser, however, the Emporium has been replaced by Hal’s Halloween Hallway, leaving Oscar no choice but to keep the toy.

The boys return to Oscar's house, and while Raj and Isaac play a game, Oscar fiddles with the Plushtrap Chaser more, discovering a tiny port on the side of the Plushtrap's jaw. His mom calls to ask for his help tomorrow, which upsets Oscar as it takes away from trick-or-treating, and he angrily admits to stealing the Plushtrap as a storm cuts the call. Oscar gets a charger and plugs the Plushtrap in, but when he does lightning strikes, blowing the room's power out and launching Oscar. The boys go to discuss their trick-or-treat route in the living room, with Oscar closing the door to his room. Oscar reveals to his friends that he can't join them, and as they try to cheer him up a lightning strike blows the rest of the power out in the neighborhood.

Oscar retrieves flashlights for him and Isaac as Raj uses his phone, and they hear something banging against Oscar's door. They watch in horror as the Plushtrap Chaser begins chewing through the wood of the door, sharpening its teeth which gleamed and bleed in the darkness. It kicks open the door and chases them into Oscar's mom's room. It's about to attack Isaac when they remember the toy deactivates in light, so Oscar holds his flashlight on the toy, and in the process they discover it can mimic voices. The power runs out quickly and they are chased into the bathroom as Isaac retrieves his lost flashlight.

Raj tries to call the police, but the phone lines are down and they're chased into the kitchen. They try moving the Plushtrap Chaser but it's stuck to the ground, and they're forced to sneak past it as the flashlight dies. They try using Raj's phone's flashlight, but it slips out of his hands and is destroyed by the Plushtrap. The kids are chased to the garage and as they try to open the garage door, Oscar makes a plan to run to nearby train tracks hoping for a train. They barely manage to escape the garage and reach a hill before the tracks. They see light and are excited, but the Plushtrap has already caught up.

Oscar yells at his friends to jump across the tracks and after some hesitation they do, leaving Oscar to face it alone. He steps onto the tracks and waits for the right moment, and eventually he jumps, just barely dodging the train. Once the train is gone, the boys look at the tracks, finding the scattered remains of the Plushtrap Chaser, along with bloody teeth and a single intact eyeball. The next night, Oscar helps hand out candy at the nursing home. He catches up with the patient from before and gives his mother a Halloween gift as an apology. The two hug, with her apologizing for depending on him so much, and Oscar comforts her, telling her and himself that everything's okay.

Graphic Novel Differences[]

  • The beginning scenes (Oscar walking to school with Raj and Isaac, his agonizing school day, getting a call from his mother, and him arriving at Royal Oaks Nursing Home), having been completely omitted, with the story in the graphic novel beginning in Mr. Deveraux's room.

Trivia[]

  • This is a second story connected to Stitchwraith Stingers, the other is To Be Beautiful.
    • In the #2 epilogue, a homeless man named Grim watches The Stitchwraith as he's collecting remains of Plushtrap Chaser from the railroad tracks.
    • In the #5 epilogue, Plushtrap Chaser's remains are seen in Stitchwraith's hideout.
    • In the #10 epilogue, Everette Larson sees in one of his hallucinations Eleanor modifying the defective Plushtrap chaser, revealing his origins.
  • There was an illustration made for this story, but the illustrations were ultimately scrapped for the whole series. Although it was reused for its own page in The Ultimate Guide.
    • The illustration shows two boys (presumably Isaac and Raj) playing a video game on a console, sacredly looking at standing Plushtrap Chaser, all whilst lightning pierces the sky.
  • Unlike the other two stories from the book, illustration for Out of Stock was never used as a teaser.
  • Like the game counterpart and Nightmare BB, the Plushtrap Chaser can be stopped by flashlights.
  • This story introduces the concept of Fazbear Entertainment not just being a family-friendly restaurant, now selling toys that many kids wanted.
  • The Plushtrap Chaser is featured on the cover of the first Fazbear Frights graphic novel collection.
    • The Plushtrap's design on the cover and his design in the actual comic adaptation are different from each other, due to being drawn by two different artists.
  • There was an error in the original description of the second graphic novel collection which listed Out Of Stock as the first story, instead of Fetch.
  • This is the second story to have a happy, uplifting ending, the first being Into the Pit.
