“There's no pleasing you, is there, girlie? I'm trying to be nice and figure out what you like. I want you to be happy here.” |
Millie's unnamed grandfather is a major character who appeared in Count the Ways, the third story from the first Fazbear Frights book. He is an eccentric collector who loves his family and wants to do everything to make them happy, even if Millie doesn't want to be.
Physical Appearance[]
Millie’s grandfather has wispy gray hair that is always messy and wild, and he always wears the same "ratty" tan cardigan.[1]
Personality[]
Millie's grandfather is a nice person who wants to make Millie happy and comfortable during her stay with him. After the death of his wife, he became rather lonely and misses her every day. This is possibly the reason why he values making his family happy and why he loves celebrating Christmas. With that said, he isn’t afraid to be stern with Millie when she gets too angry at him. Millie's grandfather is also an eccentric collector, although it’s unclear as to what he collects. He enjoys chocolate and is pretty literate, enjoying the works of Edgar Allan Poe and similar writers.
History[]
Backstory[]
Millie's grandparents meet in high school during lunch, having a good conversation with each other. They became high school sweethearts, went to the same college, and got engaged during the senior year, marrying in June after they graduated. Millie's grandfather became a math teacher at the local high school, and his students enjoyed his class. Eventually, they moved into a 150-year-old sprawling Victorian house. Millie's grandfather would place his collections all around the house, and he's also spend some time after dinner in the workshop located in the backyard. He and his wife also visited different states, collecting souvenir plates with the names and landmarks of where the two visited. They had two sons: Jeff and Rob.
Before turning forty, Millie's grandmother got ill and passed away. Many of her grandfather's friends tried to make him feel better with other woman, but they never worked as he wife was the only one for him. He taught himself how to cook meals, mainly with meat. Eventually, he retires and spends his free time adding to his collection. While the rest of the Fitzsimmons are considered "weird" and laughed at by the town, Millie's grandfather is cut some slack and seen as "eccentric" instead due to his history. At some point, he visits a junkyard and finds an old bear animatronic, which he takes home and puts in his workshop. When Jeff and his wife, Audrey, go to Saudi Arabia for a year, Millie moves in with her grandfather. He has her stay in his wife's old sewing room, moving a bed and dresser in for her.
Count the Ways[]
One day, Millie's grandfather cooks mushy-looking meat loaf, instant mashed potatoes, and creamed spinach for dinner. Millie only gets mashed potatoes so her grandfather tries encouraging her to eat more, bring up her pale complexion. When Millie claims to like being pale, her grandfather remarks that he's happy she isn't baking in the sun like her mother did around the same age but still thinks she needs some color, offering Millie some meat loaf. Millie reminds her grandfather that she's a vegetarian, and he gives her spinach. He then tells her that he's willing to cook her vegetarian meals if she were to help him, but Millie refuses and claims she isn't a happy person. Once finished with dinner he sends Millie off to her room, goes to his workshop, and starts baking cookies. When he offers them and a glass of milk to Millie, she claims the cookies won't make her happy but still tells her grandfather to put them down on her beside table.
Later, Millie's grandfather makes spaghetti with marinara sauce, garlic bread, and Caesar salad. He makes sure the sauce is meatless for Millie while adding meatballs to his. Millie actually eats this meal, claiming it's because it's actually good and admits to having a good day. She explains she meet a boy, although tells her grandfather that they just had a decent conversation. He tells Millie that a decent conversation is good, especially with all the modern tech everyone uses, and tells her about how he and her grandmother had met. Millie compares their relationship to "Annabel Lee", which her grandfather thinks about and agrees to. Millie is shocked and he explains that he's a fan of Poe and other writers, then tells Millie that their poems about death aren't an attempt to be romantic but are written due to the losses the authors themselves have experienced and how it changes them. Millie goes to do homework without being asked and her grandfather returns to his workshop.
One day, Millie returns home to see her grandfather dressed in an ugly green pullover sweater decorated with creepy smiling Christmas trees. He tells Millie about his plans to visit the school holiday bazaar that night, and while Millie is hesitant she agrees to go once learning about the vegetarian chili and all-you-can-eat cookie buffet. After eating, Millie runs off and her grandfather catches up with other retired teachers. Millie returns to him heartbroken and demands they leave, and in the car he tries comforting her to the best of his ability.
Later, over a vegetable/vegetable and chicken stir-fry dinner, Millie's grandfather asks if Millie's excited for winter break. Millie says that she isn't and informs her grandfather that she doesn't plan to celebrate Christmas, refusing to pretend to be happy for society. Her grandfather tells her that Christmas is about family and that her aunt, uncle, and cousins are visiting on Christmas Eve, but Millie still refuses to participate. He then apologies to Millie for how unhappy she's been during her stay, not knowing what young girls are like but trying to be nice for Millie anyway. He suggests having gone with her parents would have been better, but she snaps at him and claims not to miss them. Her grandfather then asks if she's having problems at school, suggesting just talking about her issues would help, but Millie snaps at him again and storms to her room. Upset, her grandfather storms off to his workshop.
On Christmas Eve, Millie's grandfather puts on Christmas songs as he cooks for Christmas dinner, which consists of ham glazed in Coca-Cola, sweet potatoes, rolls, and Sheri's green bean casserole. He also buys a fake turkey loaf at the grocery store for Millie to eat. He calls for Millie to come downstairs and say hello to her Aunt Sheri, Uncle Rob, and two little cousins, Cameron and Hayden. He informs the rest of the family of Millie's plans to not celebrate Christmas, which confuses Cameron and Hayden. Eventually Millie can't handle being around her family and goes on a walk, and her grandfather tells her that dinner will be ready in an hour. When dinner is ready, he calls Cameron and Hayden inside and asks if they've seen Millie, which they haven't. Hayden asks why she's weird, and his grandfather says she's just fourteen. At the table, he tells Sheri about the recent vegetarian meals he's cooked for Millie, and when Sheri suggests looking for her he dismisses her concerns as Millie simply being young and believes she'll be back when she gets hungry.
Later, Millie's grandfather brings out a platter of sugar cookies and sets them down in the living room for Sheri, Rob, and their sons to eat. When he returns to the kitchen, he finally breaks down and tries calling Millie only to find her cell phone in the pocket of her jacket. He shrugs it off, still believing she'll return home when she's felt a point has been proven, and pours five cups of hot chocolate topped with mini marshmallows. Back in the living room, he asks if they're ready for presents. While his grandchildren are, Sheri is still concerned for Millie. Rob, however, makes a snarky comment about Millie not celebrating Christmas and calls her a brat. This upsets her grandfather, as he knows she's at a difficult age. He then crouches down under the Christmas tree and arranges her presents into a big pile for when she came back.
