“Well, I've gotta warn you, Oswald. I'm a beast at Skee-Ball. But I'll go easy on you since you're new here.” |
Mike is a major character in Into the Pit, the first story from Fazbear Frights 1: Into the Pit, as well as its adaptations: the video game Five Nights at Freddy's: Into the Pit, and the interactive novel Return to the Pit. He is a young boy that Oswald befriends when traveling to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza in 1985.
Physical Appearance[]
Mike is a tall black kid with huge eyeglasses. When Oswald first meets him, he is wearing a shirt with wide red and blue stripes.[4] Later, Mike wears a Back to the Future t-shirt, though the game adaptation gives it a more generic name.
In the game, his two mentioned outfits are combined into a red-and-blue striped shirt with a film logo on it. He also wears a blue baseball cap, jeans, and brown shoes. He has round black glasses and brown hair, and his idle animation involves him pulling out a green handheld game console and playing it.
Personality[]
Mike likes to act rather playful and cocky, but is a good sport towards Chip and Oswald. He is also rather generous, noticing Oswald not spending any money but still choosing to pay for him. He is a bit more of a jokester than Chip, but still good-natured. His favorite movie is Back to the Future, but he finds The Eternal Song boring. He also finds his sister's dolls creepy.
Mike constantly wins at Skee-Ball, having a great skill for it, but other than a few good-natured jokes, he is always nice about it. He is also very caught-up on pop culture, and thinks Oswald is strange for his "favorite" movie being three years old.
History[]
Mike was a young boy of around ten years old in 1985, with an unnamed sister. When he was younger, he was a really big fan of the Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, even having a plush Freddy Fazbear. While would eventually become creeped out by the animatronics, he would continue to frequent the location with his best friend, Chip, to use the arcade and eat pizza. In the game adaptation, Mike says that his father works at the new local mill.
After Chip accidentally bumps into Oswald at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, he introduces him to Mike and invites Oswald to join them at Skee-Ball. Mike asks for Oswald's name, looking at him with uncertainty, then gives him a friendly slap on back. He warns Oswald that he's great at Skee-Ball, but says he'll go easy on him since he's new. Despite this, Mike easily beats Chip and Oswald three times, but is a good sport about it and jokes around with his friends. However, neither boy from the past notices the Yellow Rabbit standing in the doorway. When Oswald has to go, Chip says farewell, hoping to see him later. When Oswald has to go, Mike gives a little nod and wave.
Oswald returns the next day and Mike gives him the nickname "Oz," like the Wizard of Oz. Chip invites Oswald to eat some pizza he and Mike had just ordered, explaining that they had ordered a large. Chip says it's more than they can eat, but Mike grins and tells him to speak for himself. While eating, Mike comments how he used to love the animatronics as a kid, even owning a stuffed Freddy that he used to sleep with, but now has come to find them creepy. Chip comments that it's weird that things you liked as a kid become creepy when you're older, like clowns, and Mike adds on that he's also come to find dolls rather creepy and sometimes thinks his sister's dolls are staring at him. After eating, the three play some Skee-Ball, with Mike once again besting his friends and being really nice about it. They then take turns playing air hockey in pairs, with Oswald managing to beat Mike once. When they run low on tokens, Oswald thanks them and says his good-byes.
Oswald makes returning to see Chip and Mike a regular occurrence. The two would talk about movies and shows they liked, usually mentioning a title Oswald doesn't recognize. One day, the three sit at a booth drinking sodas and talk, trying to ignore the animatronics' annoying music as much as possible. Chip says he liked a movie called The Eternal Song, but Mike claims to have found the movie boring and jokes that he thought it would never end. Oswald hasn't seen it and Mike offers to take Oswald to the movies with him and Chip at some point, saying Oswald needs to get out more. Oswald tells his friends that he liked E.T. and Mike laughs, saying the film is three years old and asking if they have movie theaters where Oswald's from. Mike then suggests playing Skee-Ball, but Oswald turns it down since he feels guilty the two are paying for him. Mike says they just figured Oswald wasn't given money and is fine paying for the games. When Oswald suddenly has pockets full of tokens, Chip and Mike are initially confused, but then grin and start raking the coins into their soda cups.
Oswald doesn't see Chip and Mike again after this, as his next visit to Freddy's is full of chaos and he's led away by the Yellow Rabbit before he can see if they're okay. He initially is worried about them, but eventually accepts that he cannot return to the past again.
The game adaptation of Into the Pit takes place over a shorter period of time at first, with Oswald only going to the past once before the rabbit attacks, but then extends to a longer period of time, having him return to the pit for five nights before finding his father.
When Oswald arrives in the past, he runs into Chip and Mike, who are in the dining area of the restaurant. They are friendly towards him and invite him to play Pizza-Roller with them, which Mike is best at. They then play a game of tag, but Chip easily catches both Mike and Oswald due to the crowd keeping them from maneuvering much. Mike then plays as the seeker in hide-and-seek; he easily finds Chip in a vent due to hearing him breathing, but misses Oswald hiding in a Golden Freddy suit. He and Chip make a bet to see who can find Oswald first and run into the arcade. However, once there, the chaos of the Missing Children Incident occurs, and he and Chip are separated.
The Yellow Rabbit chases Mike into the kitchen, where he is trapped inside a cabinet and guarded by Chica the Chicken. On Oswald's second night, he distracts Chica and frees Mike, who is worried about Chip. They reach the foyer, but the Yellow Rabbit bursts through the arcade doors before they can look for their friend. Mike flees the location, escaping the creature but not seeing Oswald again.
As Return to the Pit is an Interactive Novel, Oswald has many possible routes and endings depending on readers' choice. Otherwise, the book's lore is more similar to the Fazbear Frights version than the game, as the Rabbit's attack only occurs over two days rather than five, and the original short's storyline can be followed very closely.
During the first half of the story, when Oswald goes to the past, he has a few alternate routes to take. Oswald can leave Chip and Mike on either the first or second day to follow the Yellow Thing. These routes do not end well. On the second day, Oswald also wins at an arcade game, and has a choice between three prizes: a Freddy Fazbear action figure, a flashlight, or a pair of yellow bunny ears. The boys will play with the prize before going to eat pizza.
In one route where Chip appears in the future, he tells Oswald that Mike moved to Boston the year following the Incident. While he hadn't talked to Mike in "about fifteen years," he states that he is now married with kids.Trivia[]
