“You know, before things changed so much for you, you and I used to be friends. We used to talk. If you ever want to talk again, I'm here.” |
Jess is a character from The Cliffs, the first story in the book of the same name. She's a bespectacled copy editor that tries to reconnect with Robert after he isolates himself from others.
Physical Appearance[]
Jess isn’t described much other than that she wears eyeglasses. In the graphic novel, she has a round face, brown eyes, blue glasses, a pointy nose, and bright red hair that is half shaven. Jess also has black eyeliner and pink lipstick.
Personality[]
Jess is nice and a self-confessed “grammar nerd.” Being a single parent, she relates to Robert a lot and acts caring towards him. Jess also likes joking around and being playful.
History[]
Jess was hired as a copy editor for the magazine company at the same time Robert was. They were good friends and used to chat in the past, but when Anna died Robert cut himself off in order to focus his attention of Tyler.
One day, while Robert is refilling his water bottle at the water cooler, Jess approaches him to invite him to join her and other coworkers for half-price sushi on Wednesdays. Sushi was Robert and Anna's favorite food, and he since he believes it will only bring back memories of their romantic dinners, he tells her maybe. Before he can walk off, Jess stops him to tell him that she'll be there for him if he needs it, as she's a single parent too (albeit not for the same reason he is). She believes it could be good for both of them if they talked to each other about it, and they could even take turns babysitting each other kids. Robert smiles and begins to joke around with Jess, and as he goes back to work Jess tells him the sushi next Wednesday is mandatory.
