Plot[]
Toby Billings is a high school student desperate to beat his perfect older brother, Connor, at anything. Connor used to have a part-time job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and Games when he was in high school and managed to become top scorer on every arcade game during his breaks and after-work hours. Connor graduated last year, and Toby began working at the family restaurant. For the past six months, he has attempted to beat Connor’s scores, but usually only gets second place. A week prior, a new game attraction opened called Hide-and-Seek. Determined to finally get a win over Connor, Toby keeps it a secret. The game takes place in a room with a park, a store, a police station, and a pizza place. A black-shadowed Bonnie will hide behind board cutouts and the player must find him in three turns. Toby’s first few attempts end in failure, and when he returns home he gets into a brawl with Connor after he mocks him.
The next day, Toby takes time away from woodshop to create rail blocks for Hide-and-Seek in order to prevent the rabbit from hiding in certain areas. He understands it’s cheating, but he’s desperate to mock Connor with a winning score. Toby waits until Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and Games closes for the night, but even with the school, police station, and pizza place cut off he still loses to the shadow Bonnie. He uses metal chairs to block off the remaining areas, and as he’s restarting the game he feels jittery. The room goes dark, and as the counter goes down his stomach suddenly dives, his head feels light, he feels like puking, sound around him goes quiet, and he feels a strange tickle on his back. When light returns to the room, the shadow Bonnie is nowhere to be seen. Enraged, Toby begins to tear down and destroy the game. Eventually Toby gets tired and looks around in satisfaction. Reality kicks in and, unable to fix the game himself, Toby runs away.
Toby has a nightmare where he’s in a dark room lying facedown on a metal table with his hands tied above his head and his leg bound at his ankles. He spots something dark in his peripheral vision as his shirt is cut open by scissors. Toby desperately tries to fight back as something gets sewn to his back, and when he wakes up he spots his shadow in a mirror. He doesn’t think there’s enough light for there to be a shadow, and when he moves his shadow is delayed. Toby assumes he’s just tired and feels guilty about what he did yesterday, but he notices again that his shadow’s movement is delayed. He gets closer to the mirror and realizes the shadow has rabbit ears. Toby assumes he’s still dreaming and tries to sleep, and when the shadow remains he slams his back into the wall. It doesn’t work, so he gets dressed and tries asking Connor and his dad about the shadow, but they don’t see it. Toby is called to work by his boss, Dan, who shows him the destroyed Hide-and-Seek game. He gets nervous when Dan explains he called the police, and while cleaning he tries his best to remove everything linking him to the destruction.
Toby spends the rest of the weekend in his room feeling awful. He skips school on Monday but still shows up for his afternoon shift at Freddy’s, where a weird kid named Reggie reveals he can see his shadow. Reggie explains he’s been told he sees things differently, and he tries to motivate Toby much like he had been for the past few weeks. That night, Toby makes a list of ways to remove the shadow and goes with the next best option, which is to scrub it off. He goes into his garage and finds the car-wash scrubber. He scrubs as hard as he can, and when the pain becomes unbearable returns to his room and discovers the shadow has only gotten bigger. Toby wakes up the next day and Connor tells him he’s going to school. When Toby leaves his room, Connor shows concern and suggests staying home, but Toby insists on going. Connor leaves and Toby tries to eat, but he pukes a few minutes later.
Toby arrives at school and realizes that having gym as his first period is perfect for the next step in his plan. As kids line up, a girl named Tabitha Bing enters with a note and sits down. She tries talking to Toby before they group up to play basketball. Toby separates from his group to use the restroom and, when no one is looking, instead makes his way to the high school pool. Using a heavy weight vest from the weight room, he jumps into the pool in an attempt to drown the shadow. When he’s ready to go back up, the buckle doesn’t detach and he's weak from a lack of eating to swim up. Luckily, Toby’s saved by Tabitha Bing, who demands they meet at the soccer field during lunch to figure out what he was doing. There, she explains she followed him since he looked lonely. Toby explains everything, and while Tabitha just believes this is his way of dealing with his own darkness she’s supportive of Toby and gives him her phone number.
When Toby returns home, Tabitha texts him recommending a counselor. Then, a police officer knocks at the door to question him. The officer asks Toby if he did it, and when Toby says no he accepts the answer and leaves. Toby spots his dad’s lighter and thinks about burning the shadow, but tosses the lighter back. His dad asks about the cop, but Toby assures him everything’s fine. He then tries asking why their mom left, but he gets no answer so he gets ready for work. Toby notices an Out of Order sign on Hide-and-Seek and finds a tech guy working on it. He explains the game refuses to reboot and just returns to Toby’s game, and the black cutout of Bonnie is gone. Toby rushes to the employee bathroom and when staring at the shadow, two eyes open and blink at him. He rushes out of the bathroom, running into Dan, and gets another text from Tabitha recommending a herbalist. She reveals she’s at Freddy’s, and Toby meets up with her. Reggie pulls Tabitha aside and explains that Toby’s shadow is bigger, and she asks to see the game. Toby takes her to it and she tells him that he’ll beat this and she’ll keep texting him.
That night, Toby has a nightmare where the shadow chases him through a park. He’s taken back by how quickly the shadow moves as he runs by a grocery store and a school. Toby runs into an empty police station and hides behind a desk as the shadow races in. When it finds the jail cell empty, it lets out a roar. Toby thinks it’s gone and leaves only for the shadow to reappear and grow in size. Toby is consumed by the darkness, and when he wakes up he digs into his skin. Connor expresses concern when he sees Toby again, but Toby refuses to believe he really cares. They get into an argument, and Toby reveals the Hide-and-Seek game. Connor claims he’ll beat it, but when Toby keeps insisting he’ll win Connor gives up and says he’ll lose if it means Toby gets better. Toby looks in the bathroom mirror and discovers the shadow now has a row of spiked teeth. He believes he’ll never beat it and realizes he was a loser due to his own competitive and messed-up nature. Toby notices the shadow is getting weaker and only wants to win. Tabitha calls and Toby says he’s ready to end things once and for all, telling her she’s a good friend.
Toby arrives at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and Games determined to finish Hide-and-Seek. He passes by Reggie, who encourages him more and asks for Tabitha’s number. Toby enters the game, noticing it’s in the process of being repaired, and restores its power. The game asks if he wants to forfeit, but before he hits the button he decides to not let the shadow win since it had cheated by making him hurt himself. Toby punches down on the continue button, feeling the shadow’s anger slam over him, and rushes backward into some broken pegs. He feels the dark energy fade away and happily announces his victory as blood drips from his mouth. Then, the game reboots and a new game starts.
Graphic Novel Differences[]

- The workshop scene is missing and instead, Toby uses kitchen utensils from the pizzeria to create rail blocks for Hide-and-Seek.
- At the end where Toby happily announces his victory, he instead announces his victory in a saddeningly manner.
