“Well, I have some good stuff in my life, but there's so much I hate. Like my dad and... well, just stuff. So I figured I could learn to use the field, you know? Communicate with it. Tell it what I want and get it to tell me what to do.” |
Greg is the protagonist in Fetch, the first story in the book of the same name. He is a nerdy teenage boy who hopes to use controversial science in order to control the world around him and get what he wants, which leads him to discovering an animatronic that seems to align with his goals.
Physical Appearance[]
Greg has a long face, eyes that are close together, and a small nose. He has long, wavy blond hair, average height, muscular arms and legs, and a “great smile”. Despite his muscles, Greg has narrow shoulders and a thin torso with a slight chest.
Personality[]
Greg is very nerdy and loves all forms of science, his passion earning him the title of teacher’s pet. He doesn’t like stereotypical masculine things like cars and sports, causing strife between him and his father. Greg desires more control in his life and plans to manipulate the Zero Point Field in order to get whatever he wants. Greg's endeavors in controlling the field has led him to become egotistical and somewhat controlling over his friends, persistently begging them into joining him in his experiments while also hiding his true intentions from them.
History[]
Backstory[]
Greg grew up with a decently successful family. His father, a contractor, worked for long periods of time in order to afford big houses and expensive cars. Greg's uncle Darrin, however, was a wealthy, successful inventor of car parts and had amazing luck with investments and money in general. While Greg's father hates Dare, Greg loves him. When Greg was about four years old, he began to cry over a stuffed octopus in a claw machine he was unable to get. Dare tapped the glass of the machine with his right index finger and told Greg in a deep voice that he had "the Magic Finger of Luck." Dare managed to get the octopus first try, starting an ongoing joke that almost always worked.
When Greg was in first grade, he and his family moved to a seaside town in Washington. The area his family moved into was called a "hodge podge" by his mother, as there were big, fancy homes across the street from tiny, ugly beach cabins draped in dirty fishing floats and surrounded by piles of old lumber or crumpled lawn furniture. The house next to Greg's parents' tall, modern, oceanfront house had a huge boxy sedan from around the seventies up on blocks in the front yard. Strangest of all to Greg was a boarded-up pizzeria that was left untouched in what was supposedly a vacation spot. In second grade, he met Kimberly Bergstrom and gained a massive crush on her. Greg and Dare become rather close, with Dare giving Greg numerous gifts. Dare even taught Greg yoga, which Greg does every night to relax and exercise. When Greg was thirteen, new neighbors moved in next door and their dog attacked Greg, resulting in him getting ten stitches.
Since Greg had won a science fair prize, he was able to get into Advanced Scientific Theory in his freshmen year of high school. Over the summer, Greg learns about Cleve Backster's experiments and begins trying to conduct his own research on the Zero Point Field and Random Event Generators using plants, just like Backster. Somehow, through Greg's experiments with the Zero Point Field, he begins to feel drawn to the boarded-up pizzeria.
Fetch[]
One crisp autumn night, the seaside town is robbed of its power by a storm. Greg and his friends, Hadi and Cyril, had planned a Saturday night of gaming, but with the power out Greg sees the perfect opportunity to test his theory and explore the abandoned pizzeria. There, the trio find an animatronic dog named Fetch, who can sync up with someone's phone and take orders from the user. A moment after Greg activates Fetch, they hear a door slam, which makes them run out of the building. Greg rides his bike home and meets with his uncle Darrin.
At school, he receives a text from a number that reveals itself as Fetch, but Greg remains skeptical. By the next day, Greg has received a great many texts from Fetch and realizes that it has to be him since he knows everything that he's doing.
In AP science class, Greg gets partnered up with his crush Kimberly Bergstrom to do a project about REGs, which gets him excited. On his way home, Greg is attacked by his neighbor's dog, but fortunately he is able to run away. The next day, Greg finds the dog's corpse in his backyard, with Fetch texting "YW" (You're Welcome). Greg and his friends go back to the Freddy’s to find Fetch, but to no avail.
A few days later, Greg and Kimberly work on the lab project after school. They have an engaging conversation about REGs and the Zero Point Field. At home, he invites his friends to talk about Fetch. After they leave, Greg searches for ways to make more money for his experiments. He texts his uncle Darrin that he needs his "Magic Finger of Luck", a joke between Greg and his uncle. Greg is frightened to find his uncle's disembodied finger on his doormat the next morning. His mom informs him that his uncle was attacked by a wild animal who tore off his finger. When Greg finds Fetch near his house, he takes his baseball bat and angrily destroys him, burying him afterwards.
Greg oversleeps and misses school since he blames himself for his uncle's torn-off finger. Hadi called Greg, telling him that Kimberly was wondering where he was at school. As Greg is getting dressed, he gets a text from Fetch saying "Will retrieve". In disbelief, he hurries to where he buried Fetch and finds out that he was gone. Greg rushes to Kimberly's house to warn her. He arrives and hides in the bushes since Kimberly isn't home. Once she arrives, Greg tells her that she’s in danger. Her parents call the police because they think Greg is stalking her.
Greg stays at the police station until his parents arrive and take him home. After Greg takes a shower, he finds Kimberly's corpse under a sheet. He then sees a new text from Fetch saying "CU" (See you).

Trivia[]
- Greg had a nightmare which involved a faceless man[1], which could relate to the Man in Room 1280. This could also be very plausible since Fetch used to be controlled/haunted by Andrew, the soul that kept the man alive and is now in the Stitchwraith.
- Greg also regularly babysat a 4-year-old kid named Jake.
