Summary[]

Edward's friend Jack and their pet cat both died in a freak truck accident. When Edward discovers that Fazbear Entertainment has a "Friendly Face" program that will recreate a deceased pet into an animatronic using the pet's DNA, Edward sends in some of the DNA from his deceased cat. Unfortunately, he had accidentally mixed in some of Jack's DNA as well, creating a cat animatronic with Jack's face on it. Horrified, he tries to bury it, but it escapes and follows Edward around. It chases him onto the road, where Edward is killed by a truck. It is revealed that the cat animatronic is benevolent and only wanted to play with Edward.

Plot[]

Edward is a clumsy 13-year-old who struggles with hyper focusing on things. He and his best friend, Jack, are outcasts to the rest of their peers. After a particularly clumsy day during January, Edward gets off the bus and hears a strange sound coming from a neighbor’s flower bed. Edward points the sound out to Jack, and the two discover it’s a kitten. Jack gets excited and names it Faraday, based on the famous scientist Michael Faraday. While Jack bonds with Faraday, Edward watches as a dump truck passes by due to the development of a new subdivision on the other side of the neighborhood. Jack and Faraday complete their bond, and Jack decides they will both care for him. Edward is hesitant and decides to put up signs in case Faraday is lost, but Jack is certain he’s been abandoned.

Three weeks later, Faraday has settled into the Weston household well and no one comes looking for him, much to the relief of Edward. Edward begins hanging out at Jack’s house more to play with Faraday, noticing how smart and spoiled he is. One day, Mr. Weston returns home and is at first hesitant to accept Faraday, but when he presses the buttons on the remote to turn the TV to a college basketball game, Mr. Weston praises him. Jack, Edward, and Faraday retreat to Jack’s room and Jack suggests they try training Faraday. He finds a book online and Edward agrees to help with the training.

In May, Edward and Jack begin to build an obstacle course. The two believed Faraday would be safe in the backyard, as he never went anywhere Edward and Jack weren’t. One day, however, Faraday chases a monarch butterfly out into the front yard and ignores Jack. Edward runs after and Faraday goes into the street, and since he’s closer Jack runs after him right as a dump truck comes from around the corner going 20 miles over the speed limit. Edward yells and the driver tries to stop, but it’s too late and Jack and Faraday are killed. The sight of their mangled bodies makes Edward sick, and it haunts him for weeks. Everyone blames Faraday for Jack’s death, which upsets Edward further as he viewed both as his only friends.

While Edward’s watching TV, an advertisement by Fazbear Entertainment plays. The advertisement is about Fazbear Friendly Faces, where Fazbear Entertainment uses a dead pet’s DNA to recreate its face, then implants it onto an animatronic body. Edward calls the number on the screen and is given an address to send his money and pet hair. He quickly pedals to Jack’s house and discovers a massive bloodstain still on the road. Feeling sick and wanting to get away from it as soon as possible, Edward spastically scans the stain and finds black hair. He quickly picks it up and returns home.

The process usually takes eight weeks, but Edward’s order ends up taking ten weeks due to a production anomaly. Eventually, he returns home to find a Fazbear Entertainment package sitting on his front porch right as a storm is about to begin. When Edward opens the package and lifts the Friendly Face out, he screams and drops it. He shames himself for once again having hyper focused on getting the Friendly Face and not having made sure the black hair was Faraday’s, as the robot before him had Jack’s stiff, pale face. Disgusted by the abomination, Edward quickly runs outside and buries it. He hides the box in their shed right as the rain begins, and he returns soaking wet.

Edward jumps every time thunder strikes outside, and he decides to go to bed early. He wakes up in the middle of the night, hearing sounds throughout the house but can’t find anything. Edward eventually heads back to bed, but the Friendly Face, covered in mud, appears on his bed. He screams and tries to shake it off and his mother comes running in, but the robotic cat is gone. Edward stays up for the rest of the night, listening as the storm leaves. After school, he gets off the bus and spots the face in the same spot he and Jack had found Faraday. When Edward looks again it’s gone and he returns to the spot he buried the Friendly Face. It looks the same and he instead decides to clean up storm damage.

Edward begins to see the Jack-faced cat everywhere, and by the end of the week he’s a nervous wreck. After getting knocked over by a student, he sees the Friendly Face clinging on to the bus and comes up with an excuse to walk six miles home. As Edward’s walking, he sees the Friendly Face skipping along the side of the road behind him. He runs into the forest, bumping into trees and jumping over bushes, and eventually reaches a creek. Edward tries finding a way around the incline, but he looks back and sees the Jack-faced cat making its way towards him. While it looks friendly, Edward fears that it’s angry for being buried. He claws his way to the top of the incline and removes his backpack so it won’t slow him down.

Edward keeps running, eventually making it back to the creek. He recrosses it and leaps across its deepest part, landing on a rock and twisting his ankle. Edward ignores the pain and keeps running, seemingly getting lost in the forest. The pain in his ankle increasingly gets worse, but eventually he sees light creeping in between the trees and the rush of an engine. Edward’s steps falter, but when the Friendly Face touches his ankle he pushes himself further. The sweat and tears make his vision go blurry, and when he bolts out of the forest he feels an intense pain and dies, having been hit by a semitruck. The Friendly Face sits at the edge of the verge, patiently waiting for Edward to get up and keep playing.

Trivia[]

  • The original synopsis stated Andrew (either the same one from the epilogues or a different Andrew entirely) to be the protagonist of the story. However, the synopsis was revised to have Edward be the true protagonist.
  • Faraday was named after Michael Faraday, a scientist who studied electromagnetism.
  • Edward additionally references Guru Kailash Singh and Amou Haji. Guru was initially thought to be the smelliest man in the world for not washing in 37 years at the age of 65, until Amou was discovered to be 80 and have not bathed in 60 years. This information would approximately put the story between the years 2014 and 2021.
  • The Friendly Face is revealed to not be evil after all, just wanting to play with Edward.
    • This makes it one of the few paranormal creatures in the Fazbear Frights universe that isn't malicious.
  • This story introduces the Friendly Face, making this the fifth story to introduce a new animatronic; the others being Fetch, Bunny Call, The Real Jake, and Jump for Tickets.
