“When you wake up, just remember: Friends are forever.” |
Freddy Fazbear, otherwise simply known as Freddy, is the titular antagonist of the Five Nights at Freddy's series and the main of the four original animatronics of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza.
Freddy is a brown animatronic bear and the star attraction of the original Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, as well as the face and namesake of the company that owns it– Fazbear Entertainment. Freddy takes the role of lead singer and overall performer of the band, standing in the center of the stage. Undisclosed to Fazbear Entertainment and the public, Freddy is possessed by the restless spirit of Gabriel – a little boy murdered by William Afton. Due to this, Freddy and his likewise possessed bandmates are now seeking revenge against their common killer by attacking any similar-looking adults in the pizzeria after hours in a blind rage, not knowing that they, the children, are being manipulated by William Afton. However, Freddy is evidently friendly towards children and seeks to save his and his friends' own souls as well as any other children targeted by William Afton.
Freddy Fazbear officially debuted as an animatronic mascot when the original Freddy Fazbear's Pizza was opened in 1983.[4] However, it is heavily implied that prior to this, Freddy had already existed as a singing bear character for many years, if not decades.
Following the events of the The Missing Children Incident, in which Gabriel was murdered and stuffed into Freddy, the animatronic bear soon began to exude a disturbing rotten smell, which added to Fazbear Entertainment's bad reputation caused by the Missing Children Incident. Because of the unsanitary condition of Freddy and his bandmates, who also had missing children's bodies stuffed inside of them, the original Freddy Fazbear's Pizza became involved in legal troubles regarding sanitation, which Fazbear Entertainment failed to resolve. Due to this and a lack of customers, the restaurant was closed down and "left to rot" by the end of 1985, which is presumably when the Missing Children's Incident took place.
In 1987, Freddy and the other original animatronics had fallen into severe disrepair, and he was replaced by his newer counterpart for the "improved" Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, Toy Freddy.[5] After said pizzeria's untimely closing, Withered Freddy and the other original animatronics were refurbished for the reopening of the original pizzeria,[6] as of the events of the first game. However, years after the restaurant was shut down for good and abandoned, Freddy was lured into the restaurant's safe room and dismantled by William Afton, who likely took Freddy's haunted endoskeleton out of the costume and melted it down to acquire Gabriel's remnant, which William Afton fused with the endoskeletons of the Funtime Animatronics to give them life.
Following the events of Five Nights at Freddy's 3, Gabriel's soul, along with the others, was set free from his animatronic prison and given his Happiest Day, as evidenced by the Good ending. The FNaF 3 minigames, metaphorically showcase the journey towards accomplishing the Happiest Day, Gabriel being the first child to arrive at the party, implying that Freddy Fazbear was the first animatronic to have the spirit within him released.

Physical Appearance
Classic
Freddy is a brown animatronic bear with a lighter shade of brown on both his stomach and puffy muzzle. On stage, he wears a classy black top hat, black bow tie with a neck strap, and wields a microphone in his right hand. He has thick black eyebrows, three-toed feet, and three black freckles on both sides of his muzzle. On his palms and underneath his fingers, he has what appears to be paw-like prints. His round ears are articulated and are thus able to move backwards and forward (similar to the ears of several other animatronics). Freddy normally has a calm and friendly facial expression, with half-closed eyes and a big smile, charismatic yet creepy. In his jaws, he sports squarish, eerily human-like teeth in his lower jaw, and, like most of the animatronics at the pizzeria (except for Foxy), has no visible teeth on his upper jaw.[2][3] His fur color in Help Wanted is more desaturated, while the texture is more matted and scratchy. His replica in Special Delivery has a more reflective and shiny suit, as if made of different material.
He has human handprints on the right side of his face and the left side of his lower jaw, although they are difficult to locate.[2][3] His irises are normally of a light, baby blue color, although, presumably for paranormal reasons, they become glossy-black when he is commonly seen on-camera and in one of his jumpscares, rather than his normal costume eyes. The only exceptions with him and his costume eyes are in the group stare onstage, when he is coming down the East Hall, and when he is in the doorway when the power runs out. He and Foxy are the only two animatronics whose pupils glow white in the dark.
Withered
As Withered Freddy, also sometimes known as Old Freddy or simply just Freddy, he is the older, withered incarnation[7][8] of his character. He, along with the other older animatronics, have all fallen into severe disrepair, and he is replaced by his newer counterpart for the "new and improved" Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, Toy Freddy. It is explained that he has gone through an attempted retrofit, but was left unfinished after the management chose to replace him with Toy Freddy (much like the other original animatronics being replaced by their respective Toy counterparts).[5] Out of all of the original animatronics, Withered Freddy seems to be the least damaged, with only a few tears through his body and missing kneecaps. This version of Freddy is later fixed up and retrofitted back into the classic Freddy before the events of the first game.
Withered Freddy's overall appearance is unchanged from his classic form, but small differences are visible—mainly the buttons added to his chest, and a more visible stitching on the underside of his arms. Most notably, however, is the damage on his arms similar to that of Foxy's, showing parts of his endoskeleton. He also seems to be lacking kneecaps. Additionally, both of his knees are damaged, with visible wires poking out of his left knee. His body segment is also smaller, and his hat is removable, as it is seen sitting on the floor next to him in the Parts/Service room. It should be noted that he still holds a microphone. Withered Freddy has an upper set of teeth, while his head appears far blockier. In addition to this, parts of Withered Freddy's endoskeleton teeth are also slightly visible. His freckles are gone, his eyebrows are thinner, and he has embossed inner ears. His eyes are in a slightly different position, making one of his eyes go up and down, and also seem to have been placed deeper within the mask. Also, his muzzle appears to be smaller and much rounder. The reason for his disrepair is due to neglect by the company and the fact that he is simply used as spare parts for the newer animatronics. Withered Freddy's pupils can sometimes be seen illuminating white glows. In Help Wanted, Withered Freddy's design remains unchanged, however, the most noticeable change is that he has a darker shade of brown.
Personality
Despite how mysterious and normally silent Freddy Fazbear is as a character, Scott Cawthon seems to have a very specific and complex idea of Freddy's personality, as showcases of it have been cancelled and scrapped multiple times due to "not fitting the character".
Based on the Freddy Fazbear's Pizza theme song, during the day Freddy enjoys having fun and being laid-back, easygoing, happy-go-lucky, despite coming off as a threatening and scary big brown bear.
However friendly his daytime persona may be, during the night, Freddy Fazbear is possibly shown to be taunting and calculating, laughing at the night guard and stalking the guard in the shadows only to quickly arrive at the guard's office door as soon as the power goes out, in which he then plays the Toreador March before attacking.
In Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery, Freddy Fazbear finally gets a proper canon voice, one that is very deep and a bit glitchy, usually starting off as deceptively friendly and laid-back, and then slipping into a much more menacing and low-pitched tone by the end. Freddy is shown to be also somewhat sarcastic, sassy and taunting, clearly enjoying how much he scares his victim and making subtle dark jokes about it. That said, a few of his lines suggest that he can also be somewhat merciful after all. He tells the player cryptic wisdoms and pieces of advice, some of which come from a place of sarcasm and dark humor, while others seem to be a lamenting reflection of Gabriel's fate as a dead child stuffed inside Freddy. Despite his somewhat well-spoken and complex, almost grandfather-like way of speaking, Freddy is shown to have a childlike sense of mischief and sadism, which may also be alluding towards the fact that he's possessed by a little boy.
He is also shown to be the most intelligent and stealthy of the Classics, as he knows exactly where each security camera is, and moves in the shadows to avoid being easily spotted. He swiftly makes his way towards the night guard, purposefully stalks them and is capable of quickly slipping through the door without the guard noticing.
As Withered Freddy, nothing much is known about his personality, and nothing suggests it's any different from his personality as Classic Freddy. However, Withered Freddy shows that Freddy Fazbear has a benevolent side, as it's shown in the SAVETHEM minigame from Five Nights at Freddy's 2 that he appeared to be the Puppet's main helper and the protector of children targeted by William Afton, and intended to "save them" as the Puppet called out for his help in doing so; however, Freddy was too late, and was presumably deactivated by the Purple Guy until the in-game events of FNaF 2.
Due to Scott's dissatisfaction with the voice given to the characters, mainly Freddy, in the Showtime theme song in Help Wanted, it was left unused, so it is debatable whether the aspects of Freddy's personality depicted in the song are canon. A similar scenario occurred in Ultimate Custom Night, where Freddy was supposed to be given a canon voice, which was subsequently scrapped for previously mentioned reasons, distorted and instead given to Freddy's springlock predecessor– Fredbear.
Functionality
With similar technology to the funtime animatronics that allow costume plates to be opened immediately, Freddy's bow tie allows the torso to open when the button is pressed for easier access to the innards. His endoskeleton includes a safety latch, which is a strange metallic black and yellow wire that can extend a metal bar to lock it in place. Freddy's endoskeleton features a red button that powers said safety latch. Freddy's music box is tucked safely to the left of Freddy's endoskeleton.[9]
Behavior
Five Nights at Freddy's
Freddy Fazbear becomes active on Night 3 and continues to move throughout subsequent nights. He initially starts at the Show Stage and then progresses to the Dining Area, Restrooms, Kitchen, and eventually reaches the Office. If the player runs out of power, Freddy will also appear, and play his theme, the Toreador March, before game over. While he is visible on most cameras, only his eyes can be seen. It is crucial to keep an eye on him as his laughter indicates his movements and location. When he reaches the East Hall Corner, the player must either monitor Cam 4B or close the right door to prevent him from entering the office. Allowing Freddy to enter the office results in a game over.
Five Nights at Freddy's 2
Withered Freddy typically departs after Withered Bonnie and Withered Chica, which allows for the activation of the other Withered animatronics. Withered Freddy remains inactive until Night 3. Once activated, Freddy initially transitions from Parts & Service to the Main Hall and subsequently proceeds to the main Hallway. Occasionally, he may appear in Party Room 3, but he always enters the Office through the hallway.
Ultimate Custom Night
"He approaches from the left hall, emerging from the darkness and progressing in stages toward your door. Keep track of him on the monitor and shut the door when he is standing in the doorway to turn him away. He moves faster as the building gets warmer, so try to keep him at a cool 60 degrees whenever possible."
