Synopsis[]

They're not just at Freddy's anymore.

In 2023, Blumhouse's box-office horror phenomenon Five Nights at Freddy's, based on the blockbuster game series by Scott Cawthon, became the highest-grossing horror film of the year. Now, a shocking new chapter of animatronic terror begins.

One year has passed since the supernatural nightmare at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. The stories about what transpired there have been twisted into a campy local legend, inspiring the town's first ever Fazfest.

Former security guard Mike (Josh Hutcherson) and police officer Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) have kept the truth from Mike's 11-year-old sister, Abby (Piper Rubio), concerning the fate of her animatronic friends.

But when Abby sneaks out to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, it will set into motion a terrifying series of events, revealing dark secrets about the true origin of Freddy's, and unleashing a long-forgotten horror hidden away for decades.

The cast of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 includes returning co-stars Theodus Crane as Jeremiah and the legendary Matthew Lillard as William Afton. The film features new characters played by Freddy Carter (Shadow and Bone, Pennyworth), Wayne Knight (Jurassic Park, Seinfeld), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters franchise, Annabelle Comes Home) and horror icon Skeet Ulrich (Scream, Riverdale).

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is directed by acclaimed returning filmmaker Emma Tammi and is written by game series creator Scott Cawthon.

The film is produced by Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum and Scott Cawthon, who together produced the first film. The executive producers are director Emma Tammi, Beatriz Sequeira, Christopher Warner, Russell Binder and Marc Mostman.

The first Freddy's film opened to a record-shattering $80 million in October 2023 and went on to earn almost $300 million worldwide.

In 1982 Minnesota, a girl named Charlotte Emily attends a birthday party at the flagship location of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. As she sits before the stage and waits for the Marionette to come out, Vanessa Afton converses with her to bring her back to the party. Soon after returning, she witnesses William Afton in his Spring Bonnie mascot suit abduct a boy, and, after failing to convince the adults, she follows them to the back rooms, despite Vanessa's protests. Charlotte finds the boy unconscious in the kitchen and witnesses William washing utensils before disappearing. This brief disappearance buys Charlotte time to rescue the boy, which she does successfully. However, William reappears and chases her down the hallway; she makes it out successfully but at the cost of being stabbed. Charlotte reappears with the boy on the stage and screams before collapsing, having succumbed to her injuries as the boy recovers and reunites with his family. The trapdoor opens and she falls in, where the Marionette emerges, carrying her body. This event becomes a turning point for the pizzeria, where investigations began and authorities claim there was no one directly responsible, with the incident blamed on Charlotte entering a restricted area and ruled as an accident. Although no arrests were made, the scandal alone was enough to shut Freddy Fazbear's Pizza down for good. However, franchise locations open shortly thereafter.

Twenty years later, Vanessa wakes up to a call from Michael Schmidt as they discuss their dinner later that night. Abby makes fun of the dinner, taking it as a date, but eventually heads out to the school bus as Jeremiah arrives to help Mike paint the house, where they talk about Mike's aunt, Jane, and how she sparked a flame of interest in the Fazbear brand, leading to the creation of Fazfest. Mike tells him that he wants Jane's connection to him or Abby to be kept between them. Jeremiah asks about the dinner with Vanessa and shares his disapproval. On the bus, Abby tells a story about what happened at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place, explaining that the rabbit's body is rumored to still be in the long-abandoned restaurant, but only a few kids believe her.

As Abby's school prepares for a science fair, robotics teacher Mr. Berg wants everyone to finish their project by Saturday and rants about the upcoming Fazfest event happening on the same night as the science fair, stating it's a mockery of robotics, and threatens the students with failure if they don't go to the science fair. Soon after, Mr. Berg walks up to Abby, noticing her small robotic Chica, and recommends Abby not to come and crosses her name off the list, despite Abby's wish to participate. The boy next to her, noticing Abby's skill, tells her she should repair her animatronic friends herself, which sparks her curiosity.

That night, as Abby returns home, Mike, preparing for his dinner with Vanessa, asks Abby to help him tie his tie. Soon after, she asks if she can visit her animatronic friends, but Mike refuses, promising that he will repair them soon and advising her to make real friends in the meantime. He leaves a 20 dollar bill for her to order food if she wishes before he leaves. Upset, Abby watches a horror show on TV called Spectral Scoopers, hosted by Rob, Lisa, and Alex.

During the dinner, Vanessa reveals that she has been taking workout classes to help her move on from her traumatic past. Mike admits he doesn't know how to handle Abby and her animatronic friends. At the end of the evening, Mike returns to find Abby gone, having left a note that she is returning to Freddy's to see the state of the animatronics herself. He follows and finds her sitting in front of the stage, where he states that her friends may be gone from the living world but still remain with Abby in her heart. Trying to make it up to her, Mike lets her take a small keepsake from the diner, and she chooses a little toy called the "FazTalker."

As they leave to go home, Mike notices a poster advocating a boycott of Fazfest among flyers advertising the festival taped to the outside walls. Seeing a phone number on it, he takes the poster and keeps it for future use. Meanwhile, the Spectral Scoopers team drives to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza for a new episode, having accepted an invitation from its night guard in hopes of a boost of viewership and ratings. Upon arrival, they are greeted by the guard, who insists on being called Michael. The group enters the restaurant, gazing in wonder at what it contains. Rob peers down the river ride's tunnel and splits from the group to venture down it. Michael pulls back the stage's curtain, revealing Freddy, Bonnie, and Chica covered by tarps on stage. Lisa asks where Foxy is, where Michael reveals he was a failed take-apart-and-put-back-together attraction. When Lisa begins to hear music, she suggests they split up and wanders off to find the source of the music, while Michael takes Alex to Kids' Cove, where Alex gets excited about the episode's potential popularity.

Lisa ventures into the establishment's basement to find a room under the stage, which houses a large gift box. She finds the music's source, being a small music box sitting beside the gift box, and shuts it off. She leans in closer to the large gift as it suddenly opens by itself, revealing the reanimated Marionette, which attacks a terrified Lisa. Hearing her scream, Alex becomes concerned and notices Michael's smiling face. Before Alex can leave to find and rescue her, he is captured by the now-mangled Foxy. Rob, seeing a light flicker, gets close, causing him to slip and fall into the water. After emerging, he begins to hear water splashing; he turns around to see the final Marionette doll fall into the water and is then attacked by over a dozen of them. Michael, after heading downstairs, finds Lisa getting possessed by the Marionette, who turns out to be the spirit of Charlotte Emily. As the possessed Lisa charges at Michael, he runs out of Freddy's and makes it out in time.

The next day, Abby tries working on her project for the science fair but can't focus and instead tries to communicate with her animatronic friends, missing them. Mike notices but doesn't know how to help her forget them. During a workout class, Vanessa is haunted by visions of her father. Terrified, she enters a changing room and is startled by a patron, Marcus, at whom she points her gun at, mistaking him for her father. Returning home, Vanessa tries to overcome her fear and gathers all her father's belongings onto a landing, closes her blinds, and turns on white noise before lying down and going to sleep. In her dream, she confronts her father and tells him that she is no longer afraid and doesn't need him. However, William chases her downstairs, where Vanessa tries to open the front door. At the top of the steps, William tells her he loves her, she'll always be his, and that she's his favorite. She manages to run back upstairs, where her younger self runs down the hallway into William's workshop, hiding behind clothes, watching as William enters whistling. While hiding, she watches William wander the room, searching for her. Soon after, she looked to her right and sees an animatronic, whose eyes glow and turn to look at her. Soon after, Vanessa heads back to the hallway, where she sees William standing at the end picking up a knife. As he approaches her, Vanessa, back in her police uniform, shoots him, causing him to fall over the railing.

That night, while Abby is asleep, she receives a message from Chica, asking for help. She sneaks out, grabs her bike, and rides to Freddy's with the guidance of Chica. Inside, she finds the place empty until Chica suddenly appears. After a happy reunion, Chica helps her with her science project, which she completes. Vanessa visits Mike's house in the morning and hears the FazTalker in Abby's room. In there, Abby scares Vanessa and excitedly shows her the completed science project. As she reveals how it was done, Vanessa, confused, doesn't understand what she means at first but is startled when Abby describes the original Freddy's location. Upon Mike getting home with breakfast, Abby shows Mike her new drawings, which he's supportive of. Vanessa tries to warn Mike about how dangerous this is, but he won't hear it. Mike reveals that he had learned about Charlotte from her father, whose number was on the boycott flyer at the franchise location. This surprises Vanessa, and he thinks she's still shaken by everything involving her father, and his dismissive attitude only frustrates her more.

On the day of the science fair, Mike drops Abby off at school before visiting Henry's house. Vanessa, at Freddy's, discovers that the music box, which keeps Charlotte dormant, had been stopped. She realizes that Charlotte has awakened and manages to speak to her. Charlotte, not trusting her, soon attacks Vanessa. Mike, arriving at the house, is invited in by Henry, where he reveals that he is the one behind the boycott flyers and their placement all over the city, reasoning the act to be done out of grief from his daughter's loss. From him, Mike learns about the river rides at the original Freddy's location. After he calls the school and learns Abby isn't there, he panically begins to leave. Before he can, Henry gives him Charlotte's music box, which she used to help her sleep. Meanwhile, Mr. Berg destroys Abby's project in an attempt to get her out of the competition. Heartbroken, Abby bikes straight to Freddy's to talk to Chica.

There, Charlotte, now wirelessly controlling Chica, suggests that she could be Abby's new robotics project, on the condition that Abby needs to help them leave. To let the animatronics escape Freddy's, a password has to be entered into the main system. With no other choice, Vanessa, captured by Charlotte, is forced to reveal it to stop Charlotte from harming Abby. Once Abby types in the password and the restriction is lifted, Charlotte and the animatronics are finally free to roam the streets. After Abby and Chica leave to wait for a cab, Charlotte locks Vanessa in a locker.

Combined with what Vanessa told him that morning, Mike finally understands something strange is going on and decides to investigate the original location on his own. He enters via an open window on the side of the building. Upon entering and finding a flashlight, he is frightened by the prototype animatronics. Mike quickly leaves the storage room, not noticing Lisa's body. After rescuing a tied-up Vanessa, she tells him that Charlotte, the girl who died at the pizzeria, is seeking revenge on the parents who ignored her warnings. They learn that the only way to stop her is to reach the office and reenable the system restriction to cut off the signal.

After escaping from Balloon Boy, they reach the security office. Mike works to reactivate the restriction while Vanessa searches for Abby, who's unknowingly in danger. While everyone at the school fair is amazed at Chica, Mr. Berg dismisses her again, calling her a fraud and insisting Chica is nothing more than someone in a mascot suit. Following Charlotte's revenge plan, Chica chases him down and kills him. Abby ends up winning the science fair, and when Chica senses someone trying to block the signal that allowed them to escape Freddy's, the prototypes are activated.

Meanwhile, the Fazfest is a success. Having escaped the pizzeria, the loose animatronics blend in perfectly with the crowd. No one believes they could be the real ones, much less that they pose a danger. While driving, Vanessa is attacked by Foxy while Freddy and Bonnie visit random houses. Freddy, about to attack a couple, is stopped by Vanessa as she manages to slam on her brakes, launching Foxy through the house's window, saving the couple. Mike manages to shut down the signal, disabling all animatronics except for one: Chica, whose signal shows up at his home address. The animatronic carried an exhausted Abby from school to the Schmidt house, and after laying in her bed, Chica begins to shut down, which makes her glitch and crack. Eventually, Chica's chest breaks open, revealing Marionette inside, who lunges out at Abby, possessing her to restore the signal to reawaken the others. Vanessa tries to drive to Mike's house, but her car dies; Jeremiah sees her predicament and offers her some help.

Realizing that the only way to stop Charlotte is to call the spirits of the children, Mike heads to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place, and asks the spirits for help. Vanessa enters the Schmidt house and encounters a possessed Abby. In a struggle to convince Charlotte to release her, Mike arrives in time and uses the music box to appease Charlotte, who releases Abby. Soon, Michael arrives and reveals himself to be Vanessa's brother, explaining that he intends to continue their father's legacy and uses the Fazfest to unleash a massacre.

After Michael fails to get Vanessa to join him, he orders the animatronics to attack. Though, before they could, the four animatronics from the franchise location find Mike's house and destroy their Toy counterparts. Now exposed, Michael attempts to flee but is stopped by Jeremiah; he manages to escape, however, leaving his security badge behind. As the animatronics fall lifeless and shut down, the blond ghost child tells Mike that they are able to move to the afterlife and bid him and Abby farewell, telling the Schmidt siblings that they should give life in the living world another chance and encourages Abby to live life to the fullest. But before disappearing, he cryptically warns Mike that their departure will cause William Afton's soul to return and bring new terror. Mike, Abby and Jeremiah leave the house, and as Vanessa begins to follow, Mike stops and tells her to distance herself from them. As she watches them leave, Charlotte, as the Marionette, sneaks up and possesses Vanessa.

In the mid-credits scene, a trio of friends, Patrick, Robert, and Ethan, break into and scavenge Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place during a storm, looking for items that can be used as authentic props for a haunted attraction before the location is demolished the following morning. Ethan, at the back of the location, calls out to Patrick and Robert to show them his discovery. They rush over to see an animatronic that, unbeknownst to them, houses the remains of William Afton. Robert hands Patrick a sheet to cover the rotting animatronic as he and Ethan go back to get a dolly so they can safely transport it. Patrick takes a final look at the animatronic rabbit before covering it and runs back to catch the others. After he leaves, its eye lights up.

During the end-credits, Henry leaves a recorded message for Mike, revealing that he and William Afton used to be business partners for many years and are the creators of the animatronics, adding that he still possesses some leftover, outdated equipment to track some of the animatronics. He tries to warn Mike about the Marionette but is interrupted by loud noises in the background, where he urgently tells Mike to "get out of there" and cuts the tape short.

Speculation[]

WitheredChica-Icon "I was the first! I have seen everything!"

This section archives a lot of theories and speculation, which usually occurs from pre-release media, or just things that are still unknown, so please keep that in mind while reading. The page will continue to be updated with the most accurate information as more solid evidence is supplied.

  • On The Numbers "Movies Planned for Release in 2025" page, there was a "Untitled Blumhouse Event Film" that was set to release on October 17, 2025, which was being speculated to be Five Nights at Freddy's 2.[44]
    • This was later revealed to be the release date for Blumhouse's Black Phone 2, a sequel to their 2021 horror film, The Black Phone.
      • It can be assumed that Five Nights at Freddy's 2 could've initially been set to release on October 17, due to Black Phone 2 originally being set for June 27, 2025, before being moved up to October 17, at the same time as the release date announcement for Five Nights at Freddy's 2.
  • Musical artist TryHardNinja, would retweet the films teaser with lyrics of his fan-song "Welcome Back," which has fans speculating that TryHardNinja's "Welcome Back" will be the end credits track.[45]
    • This could end up being false as, on October 12, Popternative uploaded a short interview with Emma Tammi where she, when asked about The Living Tombstone, said "Well, we loved the inclusion of, you know, their song in the first movie. So, hopefully, maybe, there'll be some to look forward to in the second one as well."[46]
      • This ended up being true, with "It's Been So Long" by The Living Tombstone being used.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • The film is said to take place a year after the first film, which was set in 2000, but the prologue opens in 1982, with the main events taking place 20 years after. This would place the film's setting in 2002.
  • Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich previously worked together in 1996's Scream, making this the first film in 29 years since they last worked together.
  • Withered Golden Freddy, Shadow Freddy, Endo-02, and JJ are the only characters from the game to not appear in the film.
  • CoryxKenshin returns as the Cabbie, continuing the gag from the first film.
  • Fazfest includes various cameos, those being 8-BitRyan and Kellen Goff as Freddy, Dawko as Bonnie, Razzbowski as Chica, and Bazamalam as Foxy.
    • These cameos have led to speculation on if Ryan, Dawko, Razz, and Baz's characters are the same as the employees of the month from the first film.
  • In the first film, Mike keeps getting startled by a small Balloon Boy figurine. This gag is continued in the second film, this time ending with Mike decapitating Balloon Boy.
    • This could also be a reference to the fandom's dislike for Balloon Boy, especially around the release of Five Nights at Freddy's 2.
  • MatPat and Megan Fox's voices for Toy Bonnie and Toy Chica are similar to that of their video game counterparts, who are voiced by Kadet Kuhne and Amber Lee Connors.
    • Though, Kellen Goff's voice for Toy Freddy is significantly altered from his game counterpart, voiced by Darren Roebuck. Instead of being bubbly and goofy, he's more gruff and deep, similarly to Glamrock Freddy, who is also voiced by Goff.
  • Kristin Morlino's dog, Cosmo, was the film's costume dog, who was dressed up as Freddy.[47]

Easter Eggs and References[]

  • Toreador March can be heard at the very beginning of the film.
    • William Afton can also be heard whistling the tune during the intro scene and Vanessa's dream.
  • The very beginning seems to use the stock ambient track used in the Five Nights at Freddy's 2 office, "In the Depths."
  • Right after the title card, the stock children cheer, used when the player reaches 6 AM in the games, can be heard.
  • The intro scene shows three arcade games:
  • As with the first film, the opening credits are accompanied by an 8-bit minigame sequence, this time depicting both the Toy animatronics performing and newspaper articles covering the death of Charlotte at the restaurant.
  • The way Vanessa wakes up in the beginning parallels the way Mike wakes up in the first film.
  • The paranormal TV show, "Spectral Scoopers," may be a reference to the Scooper from Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location.
  • When Mike interacts with the Freddy plush inside the dilapidated Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place, it plays a brief excerpt of Abdul Cisse's beatbox cover of The Living Tombstone's Five Nights at Freddy's song.
  • Before capturing Vanessa, Charlotte tells her "I don't hate you, but you need to stay out of my way." This is a verbatim quote from the Marionette in Ultimate Custom Night.
    • It was later revealed that Mckenna Grace pitched to have the line added.[48]
  • The voice message Henry sends to Mike during the end-credits is a direct reference of his video game counterparts audio recordings he gives the player in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator.
  • The scene at the end of the film where the Classic animatronics destroy the Toy animatronics bears a striking resemblance to the scene in the book The Twisted Ones, where the Classic animatronics destroy the Twisted animatronics.
  • The scene where Mangle is on top of Vanessa's car could be a reference to the ending in Secret of the Mimic, where the Mimic is on Arnold's van and breaks the windshield using its arm, causing an accident.
    • It's possible this is the other way around, as the scripts for the film and the game were likely being written around the same time.
  • The Marionette hiding inside of Toy Chica's chest could be a reference to Lefty.
  • Circus Baby appears in Vanessa's dream.
  • RWQFSFASXC makes a brief appearance when Mike starts hearing the Withered animatronics, being visible for a few frames before Mike shines his flashlight past him.
  • While never seen in the film, the left side of the office hallway (when entering from the office), the PaperPals are seen hung on the wall.
  • Beakless and black-eyed Toy Chica is seen after Toy Chica enters the Cabbie's car.
  • Cabbie is seen listen to "Talking in Your Sleep" by The Romantics, a prominent song from the first film.
  • When telling Vanessa about how her school project was completed, Abby mentioned that Toy Freddy's fingers were too fat to help, referencing Toy Freddy's Ultimate Custom Night line, "It's not my fault. I have these fat, plastic fingers and can't press the buttons!"
  • The office has two sticky notes, one on the pizzerias map that says, "Give gifts, give life," and one on the monitor that says, "You can't."
  • The railings on the bridges over the River Voyage have Toy Freddy's head shape in the center.
  • One of the Bonnie cosplayers at Fazfest says Toy Freddy "looks like a toy," referencing the fact that he's a Toy animatronic.
  • Toy Chica being brought to Abby's school is a reference to "Toy Chica: The High School Years" from Ultimate Custom Night.
  • When Mike attempts to shut the animatronics down, the film shows a POV shot of Toy Chica on the stage of the science fair, where red, bold text that reads "SECURITY BREACH" pops up. This could be a reference to Glamrock Freddy's malfunction during the intro cutscene of Security Breach
  • Charlotte's clothing has black-and-white stripes, foreshadowing her inevitable possessing of the Marionette.
  • In the intro scene, after the trap door is opened, Charlotte is lifted back up by the Marionette, this could be a reference to Henry's Completion ending monologue where he says, "I'm sorry on that day, the day you were shut out and left to die, no one was there to lift you up into their arms, the way you lifted others into yours."
  • Vanessa's closet houses a box, which could be a reference to the Five Nights at Freddy's 4 box.
  • After learning that the location has no doors, Mike says "What kind of idiot designed this place." This being a meta jab at Scott Cawthon himself.
  • The end of the code that frees the animatronics ends in "CD1," a reference to the code that skips the player to night 6 in the first two Five Nights at Freddy's games.
  • In Vanessa's dream, there are multiple photos of the Afton family.
    • A few of them show a female, who is assumed to be Mrs. Afton. All the photos with her has her face obstructed or looking away.
    • One shows young Vanessa in a white rabbit costume, referencing Vanny.
    • Another shows an even younger Vanessa with the fan-named "Grandpa Afton." The photo is an actual photo from Miriam Spumpkin's family, Grandpa Afton being Spumpkin's late great-grandfather.[49]
  • The address and zip code of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza is 12525 Amazement Drive, "12525" being a reference to the film's release date.
  • The music box Henry made for Charlotte has a ballerina that spins when played, the ballerina looks similar to that of Ballora.
  • The Withereds are shown doing something from the games.
  • During the mid-credits scene, Ethan, one of the scavengers looting Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place, says "I think I found one, a real one." This being a reference to Phone Dude's line "We found one. A real one."

Behind-the-Scenes[]

  • Mangle was puppeteered by upwards to thirteens people.[50]
  • As revealed in interviews, Kellen Goff and MatPat, and possibly Megan Fox, did multiple iterations of their characters voice.
    • Kellen mentioned he did do some iterations that were closer to Darren Roebuck's performance from the games, but they ultimately chose to lean into the film's tone more.[51]
    • MatPat mentioned he did iterations closer to Kadet Kuhne and some closer to his own voice.[52] He's added that he was unsure which iteration the production chose, as the voice filters make it hard to tell.
  • Freddy Fazbear's Pizza was referred to as "River Freddy's" by the team.
  • The possessed Lisa and Abby were called "Lisaonette" and "Abbionette."[53]
    • It can be presumed that Vanessa's possessed form is named "Vanessaonette," or something similar.

Production[]

  • For the tenth anniversary of the franchise, Scottgames shared four scripts for the second film, three of which being fake. With the release of the film, it's been confirmed that the first attached script was the real one.[54]
  • The production title for the film was "Music Box."
  • Fazfest had 150+ cosplays made for the scenes, which were made from using 500+ FNaF and other cosplays for inspiration and took up a 40-page research packet.[55]
  • The Aftons are all given clothing with shades of purple.[56]
    • William's plaid button-up shirt, that he wears in the opening, has a faint stripe of purple, which is never seen in-film. William, in Vanessa's dream, is seen wearing a deep purple button-up shirt, and his work apron was made in-house by the production.
    • Young Vanessa's shirt and pants were made in-house, to match Vanessa's bluish-purple long sleeve shirt and pants.
    • Michael's Freddy-shaped security badge was a prop made by the prop department. He's also seen wearing a purple shirt.
  • The Freddy Fazbear's Pizza employee outfits were designed using photos of family-run pizzeria employee uniforms from the late-1970s to early-1980s.[57]

Other[]

  • The film raised $64 million during its domestic open.[58]
  • Just like the first film, Universal uploaded a Snapchat lens which held 3D scans of Toy Freddy, Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica, Mangle, Balloon Boy, and Marionette. The filter also has Marionette possess the user, giving them Marionette-like makeup.
  • X/Twitter received hashflags of Toy Freddy, Toy Bonnie, and Toy Chica on November 14, 2025. They were removed at an unknown date.
