Summary[]
Welcome back to the new and improved Freddy Fazbear's Pizza!
In Five Nights at Freddy's 2, the old and aging animatronics are joined by a new cast of characters. They are kid-friendly, updated with the latest in facial recognition technology, tied into local criminal databases, and promise to put on a safe and entertaining show for kids and grown-ups alike!
What could go wrong?
As the new security guard working nights, your job is to monitor cameras and make sure nothing goes wrong after-hours. The previous guard has complained about the characters trying to get into the office (he has since been moved to day-shift). So to make your job easier, you've been provided with your very own empty Freddy Fazbear head, which should fool the animatronic characters into leaving you alone if they should accidentally enter your office.
As always, Fazbear Entertainment is not responsible for death or dismemberment.
Gameplay[]
Like the first game, FNaF 2 is an indie point-and-click survival horror video game. The player controls Jeremy Fitzgerald, the night guard at the newly revamped Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Like in the first entry, Jeremy must survive from midnight to 6 AM without being attacked by the Animatronics wandering through the building. The game introduces the Toy animatronics as the main antagonists, while the Classic aniamtronics from FNaF 1 return as Withered Animatronics - damaged shells of their former selves. This game also introduces two new animatronics, The Puppet and Balloon Boy.
As in the first game, Jeremy will be located in the security office for the duration of each night. He will have access to a monitor that allows him to scroll through the security cameras and a flashlight with limited battery that can illuminate rooms being viewed on the cameras. Animatronics will slowly navigate the building and attempt to get into the Office, either through the Main Hall or one of two air vents on either side of the desk - all of which can be illuminated using light switches. Unlike in FNaF 1, however, the doors and power mechanics have both been removed, meaning that the player cannot stop animatronics getting inside the office.
Jeremy can put on a Freddy Fazbear Head to disguise himself if an animatronic enters the Office and evade being attacked - however, this does not work on Withered Foxy, who must be scared off using the flashlight instead. To prevent the mask from being abused, however, there is a music box in the building's Prize Counter that slowly winds down over time. The player must frequently open the monitor, flip to the Prize Counter and rewind the music box - if it fully unwinds, the Puppet will escape from its prize box and head towards the office, and like Withered Foxy, it cannot be fooled by the Freddy head. Failure to defend himself from an animatronic (except Balloon Boy, who will instead disable the flashlight) will result in them jumpscaring the player and killing Jeremy, resulting in a game over.
The game's main campaign is split into five levels, or "nights," just like the original game. Beating Night 5 will unlock an extra-difficult Night 6, and beating that unlocks a customizable Night 7 which allows to adjust the difficulty of each animatronic. There are also four hidden minigames that can randomly occur upon receiving a game over, which allows the player to play as the animatronics in Atari-style levels that give insight on the plot.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 received generally mixed reviews from critics.
Omri Petitte from PC Gamer gave the game a score of 70 out of 100, commenting that what he wanted in the sequel "was more mind games and more uncertainty. I wanted the plodding animatronic suits to find me and rip my face off in new and interesting ways. I wanted working legs. What I got was a horror game dipping heavily into deception and subtlety, a wonderfully cruel cocktail of supernatural mystery and jolts of panicked adrenaline. Enjoying the good parts, though, comes with a cost of the frustratingly steep difficulty."[2]
History[]
Development on Five Nights at Freddy's 2 presumably began in late-August to early-September 2014. The title would officially be announced to be in the works on September 12, 2014, with a teaser on Scott Cawthon's website, Scott Games, of Withered Freddy with the text "2" and "Grand Reopening." The teaser set the release of the title for 2015.[3] Scott Games would be updated on September 28 to show a new teaser of Withered Bonnie alongside Toy Bonnie, with the text "Something borrowed... Something new..." associated with Bonnie and Toy Bonnie, respectively.[4] The next month, on October 7, Scott Games would once again be updated with a new teaser of Foxy and his new counterpart, Mangle, peeking in from a purple curtain with their hooks, with a sign in the middle with the number 2 on it.[5] A little over a week later, on October 15, a new teaser would be added to Scott Games of a Freddy mask with Withered Foxy seen in a hallway through the right eye hole. The teaser featured the text "NO PLACE TO RUN and exactly one place to hide."[6] On October 21, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 was uploaded to Steam's now-defunct Steam Greenlight platform for community review[7] along with the trailer that was uploaded to Scott Cawthon's YouTube channel.[8] The game would get greenlit on Steam Greenlight on October 23, 2014.[9] The next month, on November 9, a new teaser would be added to Scott Games, of a fully black image with a "CAM 11" at the bottom right with an alert icon next to it. When the teaser was brightened, it revealed the Puppet exiting their music box and a portion of the games map.[10]
The following day, November 10, Scott would announce a demo would release on November 11 on IndieDB.[11] A few select YouTubers would also receive an extended version of the demo for the game, with three nights. Later that day, Scott would officially release Five Nights at Freddy's 2 on Steam and Amazon on November 10, 2014.[12][13] Later that day, the game would be updated to version 1.03. The next day, Scott would make a comment on IndieDB saying IndieDB needs to approve the demo, and it could take a few days; it would seemingly be approved later that day.[14] The full game would also be updated to version 1.031 and later another undocumented update; it is unknown if this update has a version number.[15] A Amazon Fire OS port would release on November 13, 2014,[16] followed by a Desura release on November 14, 2014,[17] Android on November 15, 2014,[18] with a demo, and iOS a few days later, on November 20, 2014.[19] The next month, a Windows Phone port would be released on December 2, 2014;[20] however, the Windows Phone port would be removed from stores at an unknown date. Two weeks later, the Steam release would be updated to version 1.032.
Little under a year later, on October 27, 2015, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 would be updated to version 1.033, commonly referred to as the "Halloween Update." In 2018, Scott would start working with Clickteam to update the mobile ports and port the game to major consoles.[21] The Android and iOS updates would release on October 29, 2019, updating the game to version 2.0.[22] A few days later, on October 31, the mobile ports would be updated to version 2.0.1.[23] The next month, the Xbox port would release on November 28, 2019,[24] and PlayStation and Nintendo Switch on November 29, 2019.[25][26] On November 5, 2020, the mobile ports were updated to version 2.0.2, and a few days later, on November 8, version 2.0.3. On February 15, 2022, the mobile ports received a "Subtitle Update."[27] Two months later, the console ports would receive the same update on April 29, 2022.[28]
