This is a trivia sub-page related to William Afton.

General[]

  • It is heavily implied in the games and books that William Afton is highly intelligent.
  • William Afton was initially known as Purple Guy by fans due to his purple sprite in the Five Nights at Freddy's 2 death minigames "Take Cake to the Children" and "Foxy Go! Go! Go!" He would go on to appear in Five Nights at Freddy's 3 and Five Nights at Freddy's 4 using a similar sprite in other pixelated minigames. This was most likely to portray him as a "shadowy" character, since the background is already black. It wasn't until Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location that the name "Afton" would be used, finally tying Purple Guy to the William Afton in the novels.
  • Unlike most human characters in the series, William Afton speaks in a strong southeastern British Accent. Afton's voice provider, PJ Heywood, mentioned in an interview that he based Afton's personality upon Anthony Hopkin's portrayal of Dr. Hannibal Lecter from Silence of the Lambs.
  • A full view of William Afton's corpse head in his Springtrap incarnation appeared in the Ultimate Custom Night Demo troll game as one of the enemy sprites.
  • Most of his actions throughout the series show that he is right-handed.
    • In the minigames of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 and Five Nights at Freddy's 3, he uses his right hand when holding his weapon. This does not include his flipped sprite.
    • In Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery, Springtrap reaches for the player with his right hand.
  • The name Scraptrap has never appeared in the games and was simply a name used by the fans to distinguish between the earlier iteration of Springtrap and this one. However, similar to names like Phone Guy and Golden Freddy, the name has come into use in other official sources such as Five Nights at Freddy's: The Freddy Files and by Scott Cawthon himself.
  • It is implied that William's main/end goal was to become immortal through the use of Remnant, as suggested by the novel trilogy.
  • It is also implied that William was also driven by a never-ending need to inflict pain upon others, as suggested by the Fazbear Frights books.
  • Throughout the games, William has been revealed to have killed a staggering total of eleven children.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2[]

  • It’s heavily implied that judging by the security badge he wore in the SAVETHEM minigame, he masqueraded as a security guard in the 1987 Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza to gain access to the building.

Five Nights at Freddy's 3[]

General[]

  • With assorted parts of his flesh visible, William is the second human character to make any sort of on-screen appearance, after Mike Schmidt (as his eyes and teeth are visible in the Game Over screen in the first game).
    • With these visible parts of his body, some discerning features can be made out in William, such as a cleft chin.
    • Along with that, William is also the only character who has revealed more of an on-screen appearance (that being the Jumpscares, Extras, and rare boot screens).
  • The code for Night 4's minigame in Five Nights at Freddy's 3 (395248) is the hex code of purple in reverse (#842593).
  • It is unknown how William Afton haunts Springtrap - it is speculated that his consciousness is somehow inhabiting the suit.
    • An alternative theory is that his corpse was reanimated after dying - which would explain how his suit in FFPS is different, as he may have switched it after the third game.
    • Another theory is that William haunts the endoskeleton which can be removed from the suit (again explaining how William has a different suit in FFPS, while also explaining how the animatronic parts move).
  • On the announcement of the successful beta-test on the Steam Greenlight page, Springtrap's name is first revealed by several letters which are doubled throughout the text. These letters, when compiled together, spell "My Name is Springtrap".[1]
  • As of version 1.031, Springtrap now makes footsteps and moaning noises when he moves.
    • Some people have assumed that the moaning noise is William Afton inside of Springtrap trying to talk.
    • The sound had been roughly and/or vaguely deciphered where it can be assumed Springtrap is saying "Help me".
    • However, it is revealed in the game files that these sounds are actually just low-pitched alpaca noises.
  • He is named after the trap device of the same name which is used for catching animals during hunting and how he is a springlock suit.
  • Occasionally, when the game starts up, one of three images of Springtrap revealing William Afton's corpse inside of him may appear, similarly to the eyeless Bonnie screen from the first game and the eyeless screens from the second game.
    • Upon analyzing the three images that can rarely appear when starting a night, it can be seen that Springtrap had no animatronic eyes, but instead has human eyes. However, these could also be the real animatronic eyes that ended up being jammed into William Afton's skull when the springlocks failed. This can be supported by the fact that Springtrap's eyes glow, a trait obviously not found in human eyes. It's possible that Springtrap's eyes are actually inside Afton's, making his eyeballs glow. It's also possible Springtrap's eyes are glowing because of a paranormal reason, as previous animatronics have exhibited similar behavior.
    • Part of William Afton's lower jaw, including his lower teeth, can also briefly be seen in Springtrap's right-side jumpscare, and while Springtrap is in sight on CAM 15.
    • The image of Springtrap ripping his head off is eerily similar to a hallucination in the first game, where a poster shows Freddy ripping his head off in an almost identical manner. However, this may just be a coincidence on Scott's part.
  • If the player is not careful enough to avoid the phantom animatronics, they may get jumpscared by one of them, and be caught immediately after by Springtrap.
  • Springtrap's positions on the cameras may be very difficult to spot on certain occasions, and sometimes require careful observation. This may be because of the overlying static on the camera, or due to the fact that Springtrap tends to lurk in dark areas.
  • Springtrap has five fingers on each hand, as opposed to the cartoonish four-fingered hands of the other animatronics. This is because Spring Bonnie (the original springlock suit) was designed to fit a human inside, albeit rather poorly.
  • Being the only animatronic who actually attacks the player directly, Springtrap has two jumpscares.
  • Springtrap, classic Bonnie, Withered Bonnie, Mangle, the Puppet, Withered Chica, Withered Foxy, and BB are the only animatronics from the entire series to lack eyebrows.
  • IT BURNS Brightened

Springtrap's face as seen in the brightened "IT BURNS!" newspaper.

Despite being in the horror attraction while it burned to the ground, Springtrap survived. Upon brightening the newspaper shown after completing Night 6, Springtrap's face can be seen next to the Freddy figurine. This has also been confirmed in the final cutscene from Sister Location after beating 10/20 mode on the Custom Night.
  • Springtrap is also believed to be one of the first two animatronics in the business along with Fredbear, the possible second hybrid (wearable costume and animatronic). Phone Guy states there were two wearable animatronics in the training tape on Night 2.
    • Strangely, however, the Golden Freddy suit has four fingers in the first two games, unlike Springtrap, who possesses five. If this is a case, then Golden Freddy is just a ghost/hallucination and what exactly happened to the real springlock Fredbear suit remains unknown.
      • However, it is possible that one of Golden Freddy's four fingers could hold two fingers, or the company modified the suit to fit the four-fingered endoskeletons or avoid any association with the incident that occurred at Fredbear's Family Diner in the fourth game.
    • This is also supported in the Novel Trilogy
  • If the player is close to 6 AM and Springtrap is at the doorway or window, it's recommended for the player to sit there and wait, as any movement of looking at the Monitor or Maintenance Panel will likely result in death.
  • Before having his name confirmed, the most common name for this animatronic coined by fans was "Salvage".
    • Another popular fan name was "Golden Bonnie", as fans believed that Springtrap was somehow connected to the similar-looking animatronic Golden Freddy while also retaining a resemblance to Bonnie.
    • "Hybrid" was also a popular fan name.
      • Coincidentally, Springtrap is a hybrid - just not the way fans theorized.
      • Another coincidental detail is that Springtrap is implied to have been "salvaged" after the restaurant was shut down.
      • Also, coincidentally, Springtrap is actually related to Fredbear, who is theorized to be Golden Freddy.
  • Springtrap's jumpscare from the left side of The Office is the only jumpscare in the game where the animatronic’s mouth isn't open.
  • The animation of Springtrap's 8-bit sprite after killing William Afton bears a strong resemblance to Springtrap's twitching in the game's teaser trailer. Additionally, the text in the trailer starts yellow, but turns red and has a ripple effect going below the letters, again similar to the pool of blood that forms underneath the suit in the minigame.
  • Along with Golden Freddy (from the second game), Springtrap is one of the few animatronics without a confirmed starting location. It is debated where his exact starting location is, with factors such as the game trailer and the first rooms he will appear in acting as evidence to support certain theories.
  • In all of Springtrap's appearances in the camera feeds, he appears to lean to the side slightly. This is similar to Withered Bonnie in the second game.
  • Springtrap appears in the most camera feeds in the series, with a total of 15.
    • Along with this, he is the only animatronic to appear in every camera in the game.
    • Springtrap is also one of the only two characters in the game that can be seen in more than one camera, the other being Phantom BB.
  • Springtrap only has one position on each camera in the mobile version of the game, with CAM 02 being an exception for this.
  • The way Springtrap peeks into the Office from the left side of the doorway is similar to Bonnie from the first game.
  • In the first jumpscare, Springtrap's ears do not move. In the second jumpscare, however, Springtrap's ears do move. The most likely explanation for this is that Springtrap's ears can move, similarly to Bonnie's ears. This can also be seen in CAM 12, as his ears seem to bend backward.
    • His eyelids also appear capable of movement, as one of Springtrap's eyelids can be seen moving up during his left-side jumpscare.
    • This also occurs with the Puppet.
  • On CAM 05, if one looks closely at Springtrap, they can see that his eyes are a little cross-eyed. However, this may be an optical illusion, given the darkness and poor illumination of the building.
  • Unlike the animatronics from the previous games, who usually remained inactive for the majority of the night in which they are introduced, Springtrap begins moving immediately at 12 AM on the night in which he is introduced.
  • Springtrap in the game is one of the two animatronics to have both of their jumpscares in the Extra menu, the other being Nightmare Chica from Five Nights at Freddy's 4.
  • Scott Cawthon has said in a Steam post that he would like to have Springtrap return, but that it would have to make sense with the story.[2]
    • Springtrap does indeed return, appearing briefly during the final cutscene in Sister Location.
      • He also returns in every game to follow, albeit with different appearances, as William Afton becomes the primary antagonist of the series following the reveal of his identity.
  • Interestingly, parts of Springtrap are identical to each other, but are rotated differently.
    • This applies to most of the older animatronics from the second game and nightmare animatronics as well.
  • Springtrap is one of Bonnie's several counterparts to be in a different color instead of blue. Others being Shadow Bonnie, Spring Bonnie, Jack-O-Bonnie, Plushtrap, and Bonnet.
  • If one look closely to Springtrap while he's peeking behind The Office's doorway from the left, his "suit" eye along the eye-lid rotated differently to make him appear glaring.
  • Springtrap is one of Bonnie's counterparts not to wear a bowtie. Others being Shadow Bonnie and Plushtrap although this could be because his bowtie withered overtime or was salvaged.
  • The quote first seen on Springtrap's first teaser, "I am still here," has become a recurring phrase throughout the Five Nights at Freddy's series.
  • His render has a pose that resembled to that of Endo-02.
  • Springtrap seems to be more aggressive in the old mobile version.
  • If the ventilation systems are failing the player will hallucinate multiple different Springtraps throughout the building.
  • If the player looks out of the corner of their eye while on the Maintenance Panel, they can see Springtrap run to the office doorway if he is already close.
  • Deploying an audio lure only has a 6 in 7 chance of working, and will only attract Springtrap on the following cameras:
    • Row is which camera the audio lure is deployed at.
    • Column is which camera Springtrap is at.
    • If a box has a checkmark, the audio lure will work and Springtrap will move to the camera the audio lure was set on within 0-100 ticks.

Bugs[]

  • When Springtrap runs across the Office, he should jumpscare the player from the right, but if the player turns their view to the left immediately after lowering the cameras, Springtrap will attack from the left.
  • Sometimes if Springtrap jumpscares the player from the left or the right, no sound will play.
  • There is a life-saving bug that players can come across, where if Springtrap attacks the player in the Office and the timer hits 6 AM before he can complete his jumpscare, his attack will be cut off and the player will still win the night, as seen here. It is rather reminiscent of Foxy's jumpscare cutting off at 6 AM in the first two games.
  • If Springtrap runs to the player on the right side, there is a rare chance that Springtrap will not trigger his jumpscare and the player will be able to lower the Monitor without having to worry about being jumpscared.
    • There is another rare bug that can occur after this is done. If the player monitors the cameras for Springtrap, if he is spotted anywhere within the attraction, there is a chance that he will suddenly jumpscare the player, ending their night. This happens regardless if he is away from the Office or not.

Errors[]

  • Upon close inspection, the head of Afton's corpse can be seen clipping through Springtrap's mask in two of his violent twitch poses for the main menu.
  • In CAM 11 and CAM 14, Springtrap's right arm appears to clip through the vent wall.
    • Springtrap's left arm also appears to be clipping through the vent wall in CAM 15.
  • In the second rare boot image, the lower half of Springtrap's left arm clips through the upper half.
  • In the third rare boot image, the right hand clips entirely through the right ear.
  • In his first position in CAM 07, Springtrap's entire right half clips into the wall.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location[]

  • PJ Heywood also voices Michael Afton
    • On PJ Heywood's Voices.com profile, it is revealed that Michael's last name is Afton, and is related to William Afton, being William's son.[3]
  • Michael Afton as a corpse in the final minigame cutscene bears an eerie resemblance to William Afton's minigame sprites from the previous installments.
    • This has led people to believe they are one and the same, however this has been debunked by Scott. [4]
  • As opposed to his second reanimated incarnation, Afton's voice sounds noticeably more smooth than future games, in which his voice sounded more gravelly.
  • Before the game's release, it was believed that Springtrap would appear in the game, according to a reflection from Circus Baby's nose in the second teaser. This was later proven false, until the Custom Night updates.
  • From Scott's Copyright Catalog, Springtrap's appearance for the game is referred as "Springtrap 2",[5] likely referring to his appearance being slightly changed with few missing and damaged features.
  • A brief scene of Springtrap from the third game's gameplay can be seen in the beginning of the Sister Location trailer.
  • When the camera stops during Michael's monologue, one can see Springtrap's blurry hand at the right. This can be seen easier when brightened. Whether or not this was intentional is unknown.

Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator[]

  • Opposed to William's moaning throughout the third game, he now speaks rather clearly.
    • As stated by PJ Heywood from Dawko's interview, Afton's voice was inspired by Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Hannibal Lecter from The Silence of Lambs.[6]
    • His voice is also much more raspy and fierce, in contrast to his voice in the intro of Sister Location. It's possible when he died and reanimated in the Spring Bonnie suit, his vocal cords became damaged, it's also been several decades.
  • One of William's kill taunts, "Bittersweet, but fitting...", is a reference to the WWI poem Dulce et Decorum Est, which describes one of the worst horrors of war — death by chlorine gas.
  • In his back alley rare screen he appears to be missing the suit on his upper right leg.

Ultimate Custom Night[]

  • In the Five Nights at Freddy's 3 skin for the Office, Springtrap can be seen standing in the corner when the lights flicker. This is purely cosmetic and does not affect gameplay.
    • This specific cosmetic appearance of Springtrap bears a strong resemblance to his appearance on the menu screen of Five Nights at Freddy's 3.
  • Also within the Five Nights at Freddy's 3-themed Office, there are posters showing each of the three rare boot screens of Springtrap from the third game.
  • Afton is the only character in the game who can jumpscare the player from the side vent as BB and JJ serve as distractions.
  • Unlike other animatronics who have voices, and have more than one voiceline, Scraptrap only has one which is reused from Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator.

Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted[]

  • "Virtualtrap," the Springtrap in Ennard's Blacklight level, could be a reference to the "Dark Springtrap" featured in FNaF merchandise such as Funko POP! figurines.
  • Springtrap can be seen crawling in the vent on the player's right.
  • The jaw of the corpse is rigged, but is never used.
  • Springtrap's corpse head is oddly blue, even though the rest of the inner corpse is a rusty color.
  • It's implied in the Pizza Party minigame that Glitchtrap's appearance is based on the costume William Afton used to lure the five kids in the missing children incident.
    • However, Afton in the "Fruity Maze" minigame is shown wearing the Springlock suit to lure children. This could either be an oversight, or it's equally possible William used two different suits during the murders.
    • It could also be Fazbear Entertainment changing the suit's appearance so they aren't directly associated with the Missing Children Incident or Fredbear's Family Diner.

Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery[]

  • PurpleGuyEasterEgg

William Afton's minigame sprite from the trailer.

William Afton's "SAVETHEM" minigame sprite from the second game appeared briefly from the far bottom right of the launch trailer video, at timestamp 1:31.
  • Springtrap uses both full and paraphrased versions of the voice lines spoken by Nightmare and Nightmare Fredbear in Ultimate Custom Night, possibly suggesting a connection between William and the Nightmare animatronics.
  • The jaw of the "corpse" is rigged to vigorously move with Springtrap's animatronic jaw, as opposed to being completely static like in his previous appearances.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach[]

  • Scraptrap, Afton's previous form in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator, appears on one of the arcade cabinets, from the game called Mad Science With Dr. Scraptrap.
