Plot[]
Greg is a 14-year-old boy who is engrossed with theories on the impact that thought and intention have on random, real-world events thanks to experiments conducted by Cleve Backster. He also has his own plants to experiment with and has been researching the Zero Point Field and random event generators. Greg begins to feel drawn to an old, abandoned pizzeria in the seaside town of Washington he lives in, so one crisp autumn night, after a storm knocks the power out, he convinces his friends Hadi and Cyril to break in with him. At a murky glass counter, they find a robotic dog named Fetch, which is designed to sync up with phones and retrieve information and other things. Greg tries to activate the animatronic, noticing that the storm stops and the only water stain in the ceiling is above his head, but the storm starts again when Fetch moves. They suddenly hear a door slam inside the building and run away.
Greg returns home and is greeted by his uncle Darrin, who called and texted him multiple times while in the restaurant, which he didn’t hear. Dare came to set up a new generator under his parents’ tall, modern, oceanfront house. Greg tells Dare that the McNallys hired him to babysit their son Jake, and they bring up Dare’s “Magic Finger of Luck,'' a joke that oddly seems to have some truth to it. They also bring up the neighbor’s dog, which attacked Greg once. Two days later, in Advanced Scientific Theory, Greg is excited to learn that they will be lectured on the Zero Point Field. He tunes out to focus on his crush, Kimberly. As Greg’s leaving he gets a text from an unknown number that claims to be Fetch. He thinks it’s Hadi, but is proven wrong when Hadi, Cyril, and Manuel, a student who transferred over from Madrid, approach him to head to Spanish class. The next day, Greg receives dozens of texts and he realizes that they have to be from Fetch. He begins to write notes on Fetch in his journal, finding them important for his project.
A couple weeks before Christmas, Dare and Greg set up an indoor picnic. Jake demands a rubber spider be removed, so Greg puts it in a plastic bag and buries it outside. A couple days before Christmas, Greg and Hadi talk on the phone about Trent, one of Cyril’s bullies. Hadi overheard he’s afraid of spiders, and Greg offers to dig up the rubber one once the rain stops. It doesn’t and he promised to help Hadi wrap presents, so he gears up only to find the rubber spider on the doormat. Greg spots teeth marks on the bag and gets a text from Fetch wishing him a merry Christmas. The day after Christmas, he shows his friends his notes on Fetch’s texts. Greg goes over the incident with the spider and explains his belief that Fetch is similar to his experiments. Greg decides he needs to conduct more experiments with intention. The next day, in Advanced Scientific Theory, they begin to do experiments on the Zero Point Field using REGs. Greg notices that Kimberly seems to already know about REGs. The class is assigned partners, and when Greg and Kimberly are paired together he believes his experiment worked.
Having missed the bus and with the wind too much for him, Greg has to walk his bike home. He’s excited to record his experiment in his journal, but he forgets about the neighbor’s dog, who uses an outdoor table to jump over the fence. Greg quickly catches the dog and pushes it away from his throat. Once safely home, he texts Hadi about the incident. That night, Greg has nightmares about being chased by Fetch, a faceless man, and the dog next door in the abandoned pizzeria while plants grow and an REG spews out 0s and 1s. In the morning, he finds the neighbor’s dog against his bike with its throat torn apart and its belly gutted. Greg retrieves garbage bags from the garden shed and dumps the corpse in the bushes. He then gets a text from Fetch saying “YW.” Two days later, Greg convinces his friends to join him in going back to the abandoned pizzeria. They find dog tracks and four life-size animatronics. A dog chases them out of the pizzeria, but they learn that it wasn’t Fetch, so they go back in and learn Fetch is no longer in the building.
A few days later, Greg tries to focus on school and texts Manuel for help. He doesn’t respond and Greg begins to worry, so he calls Cyril to ask where Manuel lives and runs to his house. There he finds Manuel safe with his yellow Labrador, Oro. On Tuesday, Greg and Kimberly practice using an REG and plan out a report. Greg is shocked that Kimberly knows REGs supposedly influence big world disasters, and Kimberly feels the same way about his knowledge of REGs. She reveals that, despite her parents being open-minded, they don’t support her interest in REGs. Greg explains who Cleve Backster is and how he’s conducting his own experiments, and while Kimberly understands what he’s trying to do, she feels that attempting to manipulate the Zero Point Field will cause him to crash and burn before he can figure it out. She feels bad for making him upset but they’re kicked out by Trent and his partner. Later that day, while Greg is waiting for his friends to come over, Fetch texts “REG M2.” He gets into an argument with Hadi and Cyril, as they don’t want to be dragged into more Fetch drama.
That night, Greg looks into ways to get more money for his experiments. He tries texting Dare, telling him he needs the Magic Finger of Luck. Fetch responds instead, but Greg is too tired to see any issues and goes to bed. Around 4:30 he wakes up and panics. Greg tries calling Dare but gets no response so he quickly puts on a hoodie and sweats, racing for the door. When he opens it, he falls to his knees at the sight of Dare’s finger laying on the mat. His mom comes downstairs crying and informs him that Darrin was attacked by a wild animal, which tore off his finger and mauled him. Dare’s in the hospital getting surgery, and it’ll be a while before they can visit. Greg runs outside in shame and sees Fetch near the back of his yard. He gets a baseball bat out from his dad’s pile of sporting equipment and destroys Fetch, hiding his parts in a depression under driftwood logs.
With Kimberly’s words stuck in his head, Greg throws all of his books at his plants in a fit of rage, destroying them. He goes back to sleep, and when he wakes up he goes back to shaming himself for being an egotistical twerp. Greg then gets a phone call from Hadi, who tells him that Kimberly is looking for him. He takes a hot shower and gets dressed only to discover a new text from Fetch, simply saying "Will retrieve.” Greg rushes outside only to find only a few screws where he hid Fetch’s parts, and he waits in the bushes for Kimberly. When she and her parents get home he jumps out and explains everything to Kimberly, but her parents call the police as they think he’s crazy and stalking her.
The cop questioning Greg is shocked to hear that the old pizzeria is still around, and he takes him to the police station as Greg repeatedly assures himself that Kimberly will be okay. His parents eventually arrive at the station and he plans to sneak out late at night to keep an eye on Kimberly. Greg’s father insults Greg once they get home, and he retreats upstairs to take a shower. When he’s done and opens the bathroom door, he falls to the floor upon seeing something bleeding wrapped in a beige sheet. Greg questions who or what is under it, but he thinks he knows everything he needs to. Suddenly, he receives a new message from Fetch: “CU.”
Graphic Novel Differences[]
- The old vicious dog that attacks Greg belongs to his elderly neighbor, Mrs. Peters, in the graphic novel.
- Greg and Hadi don't text each other after fleeing from the pizzeria, instead speaking to each other about it at the start of Advanced Science Theory. They also break in on Sunday night rather than Saturday like in the original story.
- Manuel Gomez is omitted, along with Greg's struggles with learning Spanish.
- Rather than calling his mother about his cravings for chocolate, the conversation is had over text messages.
- Greg tells Hadi about his experiments with his plants while talking on the phone about Trent rather than after Christmas.
- When Greg calls Hadi and Cyril to discuss the spider and the texts from Fetch, Hadi doesn't make fun of Cyril for shopping with his mother. Greg also doesn't print out the texts, instead showing them his phone, and receives an emoji twirling its mustache and laughing instead of "EL" from Fetch.
- Fetch texts Greg "Congrats" while Kimberly is giving her number to him rather than during Mr. Jacoby's instructions for the experiment.
- Greg shows Hadi and Cyril the dog's corpse rather than just Hadi, and this scene is only mentioned in passing rather than shown. Hadi and Cyril also immediately join Greg in returning to the pizzeria rather than needing two days worth of convincing.
- Greg's fight with Hadi and Cyril is omitted, instead skipping straight to Greg texting Dare for help with money.
- Instead of hiding in the bushes and waiting for Kimberly to return home, Greg breaks into her house while she is helping her parents organizing food. Additional dialogue is added from Greg's father, who berates and yells at him the entire way home. Greg's mother doesn't speak.
- Instead of taking a shower and finding the body wrapped in a beige sheet outside of the bathroom door, Greg finds it in his room on his way to take a nap.
Speculation[]
"I was the first! I have seen everything!"
This section archives a lot of theories and speculation, which usually occurs from pre-release media, or just things that are still unknown, so please keep that in mind while reading. The page will continue to be updated with the most accurate information as more solid evidence is supplied. |
- Fetch is found by Greg at the prize counter of an abandoned Freddy Fazbear's Pizza that's dusty yet largely intact. Cyril later researches the location and franchise on an online forum for people who explore abandoned places, discovering that it was part of a pizza chain that closed down after an incident at one of the locations.[1] Although it's not explicitly stated what had happened, it can be assumed that this is the Missing Children Incident. Strangely, Cyril had difficulty finding this information and all the message board had was a reference to the pizza chains[2] as opposed to a news article or something more direct, implying that at the time this story takes place the tragedies that happened at Freddy's were severely obscured and not remembered by many.
- Fazbear Entertainment, as well as the tragedies that happened there, would most likely resurface in a couple years since Detective Everett Larson in the Stitchwraith Stingers is aware that several murders had taken place in the pizza joint.
- In the third Stitchwraith Stinger of the series, Fetch's battery pack is used to power the Stitchwraith. It's later revealed that Andrew's soul possessed Fetch shortly after the events of The Man in Room 1280. This heavily implies that Andrew was possessing Fetch during the events of the story, which could explain his homicidal and dark nature. It's also revealed in the sixth Stitchwraith Stinger that William Afton was tethered to Andrew's soul and vice versa, implying that it was their rage and agony combined that caused Fetch's destructive behavior.
- In Greg's nightmare, he is chased by a faceless man. This could possibly be William Afton from The Man in Room 1280 due to the fact that Andrew and William are possessing Fetch in the story.
- Greg regularly babysat a kid named Jake McNally. This could be the same Jake featured in The Real Jake and the Stitchwraith Stingers, especially since the story is confirmed to take place in the same timeline. Jake is also stated to be 4 years old in Fetch, as opposed to Jake being 9 years old in The Real Jake, implying that this story may take place at least five years or longer before the events of the epilogues.
Trivia[]
- Fetch is not an ordinary animatronic, as he is able to connect with modern day devices and hack into their systems despite presumably being made in the 80s. It's implied that Fetch has a syncing device inputted into him that makes him connect to devices.
- The teaser illustration was originally going to be used in the book, but the illustrations for the whole series were scrapped. It was later used again in The Ultimate Guide.
- The story is set in an unnamed seaside town in Washington, and many real world cities and locations in Washington are mentioned throughout.
- Dare buys Greg and his parents a brand new generator from Olympia, which is said to be an hour and a half away from town. Eventually, both of Greg's parents find work in the area.
- Mr. Jacoby is a visiting teacher who goes to Greg's high school and Grays Harbor Community College.
- Kimberly's father owned a couple of hotels in Ocean Shores.
- There are many references to real world people and items in this story.
- When Greg first discovers Fetch, he compares it to the big bad wolf and the shark from Jaws.
- Cleve Backster and his position at the CIA is Greg's biggest inspiration, with him mentioning Backster every chance he gets.
- To defend Cyril from Trent, Greg quotes Henry James.
- Greg, Hadi, and Cyril are said to eat pizza and drink Coke during on of their meetings at Greg's house.
- Fetch begins the week after Halloween and seems to end around January 5th.
- According to the epilogues, this story is a continuation of The Man in Room 1280.
- This is the second story to have an ambiguous ending that's left up to interpretation, the first being Count the Ways.
- This is the fifth story to be connected to Stitchwraith Stingers, the others are Into the Pit, To Be Beautiful, Count the Ways, Out of Stock, 1:35 A.M., Step Closer, Dance with Me, The Man in Room 1280, Blackbird, The Real Jake, and Hide-and-Seek.
- In the #3 epilogue, Fetch makes a return and is in ownership of Dr. Phineas Taggart. It's battery pack was also used in Stitchwraith's creation.
- In the #4 epilogue, it's revealed that Andrew was possessing Fetch during the story of the same name.
- In the #5 epilogue, Fetch's remains are in Stitchwraith's hideout.
- In the second Dawko interview with Scott Cawthon for the 10-year anniversary, Scott stated that he would like to get Mega Cat Studios, Inc. to do an adaptation of Fetch after the release of Five Nights at Freddy's: Into the Pit.[3]
