History[]
Backstory[]
After his wife's death, Evan's son suffered brain tumor and he has to call him almost every day. First few months later, Evan gave his son a positive encouragement in hopes to get the brain tumor cured, saying "Keep your chin up," and Jake gleefully accept it. However, the surgery is unsuccessful and Jake has to go through radiation and chemotherapy, and he thus starting to get sullen. Evan tried to encourage Jake for months but he kept refusing to accept the cheer. Evan decided that Jake needed to believe in someone who could pull him out of the horror of his daily life and lead him into the joy of different possibilities, and thus "Simon" was born. Using a backup monitor linked to a hidden one inside the cabinet in Jake's room, Margie would call Evan and have him speak to Jake as Simon. Evan decides that Jake would respond more to someone his own age, so he uses a voice distorter to turn his voice into that of a little kid's.[1]
The Real Jake[]
Evan was first mentioned when Jake wonders if he would ever call, before realizing he has to concentrate in war.[2] Early on next morning, Margie phone contacts Evan. During phone chat, Evan asks how his son was doing and wishes they could find a better medicine to treat Jake's tumor. After finished talking to him, Margie lets Jake talk to his dad on the phone. That night when Jake talks with Simon, he claimed that he and his dad went out to the movie theater today to see the science-fiction movie about robots.
When Jake fell asleep after having a conversation with Simon, Margie talked to Evan on a phone about Jake's condition growing worse but did made a good attempt with playing arcade games that Evan was proud about. They laugh over a memory of the time Evan sent Margie with Jake to meet his brother for the first time.
Evan was killed when a IED detonation hit in the vehicle he was in out at sea.[3] When Michael told Margie about the tragic news of Evan's passing, she collapsed in grief. However, his death was kept hidden from Jake.
Trivia[]
