History[]
Edward and Jack were friends ever since they were babies, and the two grew up together. One of Edward's earliest memories is a time right after Christmas. His father had gotten him a huge set of building blocks, and he and Jack built a massive castle. Then, Edward decided to be a dragon and he destroyed the castle. Jack responded by throwing his arms up and shouting "Earthcake." When Edward was three, his father left and moved to the other side of the country. The only time he ever gets anything from his father is on Christmas and his birthday, where he sends $20 and card from him, his new wife, and his three new kids.
Edward and Jack quickly note they're outcasts in school and jokingly say they live in their own universe like the Loch Ness Monster, which Edward believes comes through a wormhole occasionally. At the start of junior high, Edward's mother buys him an antique walnut desk. Edward lets Jack use the desk for homework, and for the past two years Jack uses the desk while Edward works on his bed. A year prior, a new Junior High and High School complex is built to replace the old middle school and the boys have to take a new bus route that passes through a thick forest, which Edward hates due to how dark it is. A couple weeks before the story, Edward told Jack his feelings for a girl in their class named Julia, and Jack laughed at him. Around this time, construction on a new subdivision begins on the other side of their neighborhood, and dump trucks occasionally passes through the neighborhood.
After breaking his bowl of cereal and accidentally launching pepper at his science class, Edward is relieved the day is over. When he and Jack get off the bus, Edward hears a noise and the two find a black kitten, with Jack naming it Faraday. Edward watches a dump truck pass through the neighborhood as Jack calms the kitten down, and Jack decides he'll take him home. Edward and Jack head to the corner store to get supplies, and while they do Edward decides to put up posters in case the kitten is lost, but Jack is certain that it’s been abandoned due to the condition of his fur. Three weeks later, Faraday has adapted well to the Weston's house, and no one comes looking for him. Edward begins spending more time at Jack’s house, playing with Faraday and helping Jack make adjustments to the house.
Jack proposes the idea of training Faraday using a book he found online, so they begin to train him over the next three months and eventually start building an agility course in Jack's backyard. Jack supervises while Edward does the construction. In early May, Faraday chases a monarch butterfly toward the edge of the front yard. Edward tries to pick him up, but Faraday runs off into the street. Jack runs after him right as a dump truck comes from around the corner going 20 miles over the speed limit. Edward yells and tries to rescue his friends, and the driver tries to stop too, but it’s too late and both are killed. The sight of their mangled bodies makes Edward sick and he throws up in the gutter. He falls to the asphalt as the driver calls the police.
Over the next few weeks, Edward wants nothing more than to lay in his bed. Everyone blames Faraday for Jack’s death, which upsets Edward as he viewed both as his only friends. He believes that fault is shared between multiple people. One day he tries to calculate how many hours he and Jack spent in his room, but that just makes things worse. Having read all of his sci-fi books, he decides to watch TV. He finds an old sci-fi series, but when a cleaning commercial plays he goes to get a bag of chips. Right as he does, an advertisement by Fazbear Entertainment plays about Fazbear Friendly Faces, where Fazbear Entertainment uses a dead pet’s DNA to recreate its face, then implants it onto an animatronic body. Edward rushes to the kitchen, and as he's grabbing a notepad he accidentally puts a crack in the receiver.
Edward calls the number and the nice lady from Fazbear Entertainment tells him an address to send his money and pet hair. She also tells him that the process would take eight weeks. He quickly pedals to Jack’s house and discovers a massive bloodstain still on the road. Images of Jack and Faraday’s bodies flash through Edward's mind as he scans the stain, and when he finds black hair he quickly picks it up and returns home. He marks the date August 28th on his calendar and waits. His mother offers to take him to camp or to move away for a fresh start, so Edward asks to be taken to the library, which convinces her that he's getting better. August 28th passes and Edward calls Fazbear Entertainment. Another nice lady explains there was a delay in manufacturing due to a production anomaly, and it should arrive in two weeks.
Edward has to start freshman year of high school with people avoiding him and teachers acting overly friendly due to Jack’s death. Eventually, he returns home to find a Fazbear Entertainment package sitting on his front porch right as a storm is about to begin. When he opens the package and lifts the Friendly Face out, he screams and drops it. Edward shames himself for once again having hyper focused on getting the Friendly Face and not having made sure the black hair was Faraday’s, as the robot before him had Jack’s stiff, pale face. Disgusted by the abomination, Edward scoops it back into the box and tries to think of ways to get rid of it. He doesn't want to throw it away, so he runs outside and buries it. He hides the box in their shed right as the rain begins, and he returns soaking wet. With an hour before his mother gets home, Edward quickly takes a shower.
Edward is so horrified by the Friendly Face that he goes to bed early that night. He wakes up in the middle of the night, hearing sounds throughout the house. The storm knocks the power out so Edward searches his house with a flashlight, but he can't find anything. He eventually heads back to bed, but the Friendly Face, covered in mud, appears at the end of his bed. Edward screams and tries to shake it off and his mother comes running in, but the robotic cat is gone. He lets his mother comfort him, but he stays awake all night. Later, Edward spots the face in the same spot they found Faraday, but when he looks again it’s gone. Edward returns to the spot he buried the Friendly Face, but it looks the same and he instead decides to clean up storm damage. He begins to see the Jack-faced cat everywhere, and by the end of the week he’s a nervous wreck.
Edward sees the Friendly Face clinging on to the bus and comes up with an excuse to walk six miles home. As he’s walking, he sees the Friendly Face skipping along the side of the road behind him. Edward runs into the forest and across a creek. He looks back to see the Friendly Face approaching and fears that it’s angry for being buried. Edward removes his backpack and keeps running, twisting his ankle and getting lost in the forest until finding light. The Friendly Face touches his ankle but Edward keeps running. He makes it out only to feel an intense pain and die, having been hit by a semi truck.
