Dead by Daylight Chapter 36: Five Nights at Freddy's, also known as Dead by Daylight: Five Nights at Freddy's or DbD: FNaF, is a crossover chapter in the multiplayer asymmetrical survival horror game Dead by Daylight. The chapter includes a new killer, Springtrap - The Animatronic, a new map, Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, and other content from the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise.
On August 5, 2024, during the 10th anniversary week, Dead by Daylight revealed the Five Nights at Freddy's crossover, planned for Summer 2025.[1] Later that month, the Dead by Daylight team mentioned that more info on the collab would be revealed in 2025.[2] After a few months of silence, on May 9, the killer, a map, and the release date of June were announced at PAX East.[3]
A dev stream that went into detail on the chapter went live on May 27, where they revealed various new gameplay mechanics for both survivors and The Animatronic, skins, and revealed the release of June 17, 2025.[4] The PTB went live on Steam an hour later.[5] Starting on May 24, the Dead by Daylight social medias would post teasers at midnight.[6][7][8][9] A final teaser would release near 6:00 AM on May 27.[10] The PTB ended on June 3. A day before release, select creators in the Dead by Daylight community were given early access to the release build.[11] The chapter would officially release on June 17, 2025, on all platforms, and ended on July 29, 2025.
“A monstrosity of flesh and metal, Springtrap's bloodstained past is littered with the innocent dead. His horrifying innovations are a reminder that beneath the cruelty lies a brilliant inventor, whose creations brought laughter and screams to the same unfortunate audience.”
— Character description,Dead by Daylight website
Deep within the abandoned Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, William Afton ran from the ghosts of his victims. He frantically put on his beloved Spring Bonnie costume, the disguise he wore while committing his heinous crimes, to hide from the pursuing spirits.
But fate had different plans for Afton. Something activated the springlocks within the Spring Bonnie costume. Metal clamped against metal, piercing the murderer and trapping him in his costume. As he screamed, the checkerboard floor rose up to meet him, and everything went black.
Thus was Springtrap born: from the death of a murderer.
He awoke to a familiar sound, his body a pillar of agony. The ghosts that had tormented him were gone. The walls surrounding him were decomposing, the floor beneath him falling away in moldy patches. How much time had transpired since the springlocks tore through his body and fixed him within his costume? The urge to kill lingered within him still, the thirst long left unquenched.
The sound filled his ears again. Children's laughter. Were children playing in the kitchen? Springtrap rose to his feet, adjusting to his new body, and marched towards the sounds.
He picked up speed as he moved. Walking turned to running. He rushed into the kitchen and found...
Nothing.
No children, no games, no laughter. Just a swirling mass of black fog enveloping the far wall.
Springtrap examined the fog. Curiosity tightened his grip on him. As he stared into the darkness, his distended eyes could see shapes emerge within the fog.
Who were they? It didn't matter. They were his victims now. Somehow, he knew the hunt could go on forever.
All he had to do was step into the fog.
Gameplay[]
“The rotting brainchild of a sadistic murderer still stands over the grassy plains. A place of joy for some, and unspeakable terror for others. Do not let the bright colors and parlor tricks deceive you; many have died within these walls, and many more will die still.”
— Map description,Dead by Daylight
The gameplay centers around 1 killer vs. 4 survivors. The survivors' task is to fix five generators to power one of two gates that'll help them escape. As they do this, a killer is hunting them, hindering them from progressing quickly and impaling them on hooks.
In the Five Nights at Freddy's chapter, Chapter 36, a new killer is added, The Animatronic, also known as Springtrap. He uses a pizza knife as his main weapon and a fire axe as a throwable weapon, and brings three new perks: Help Wanted, Phantom Fear, and Haywire.
The chapter also introduces a new map, Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, which is the third map in the Withered Isle Realm. The map is set at an abandoned Freddy Fazbear's Pizza location seemingly surrounded by a forest. The locations excitor is unkept, and has various holes in the walls for someone to enter/exit from, or lunge over. The inside is decrepit and messy; the party room stage has three of the location's entertainers: Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Rabbit, and Chica the Chicken; with Pirate Cove to the left. The center of the room's roof is open, letting the night sky shine into the building, as a fleshy, bloody mesh lines the gap in the ceiling; with the mesh scattered around the pizzeria, as well. Other rooms include an arcade full of arcade machines, neon lights, and a ball pit, that can randomly switch to a basement; a craftroom with various extra animatronic parts and a chair holding a bloody endoskeleton; a back entrance/exit, and a backstage.
When The Animatronic is the killer, 7 Security Doors will spawn randomly throughout any map that can be used by both survivors and the killer. These doors have cameras attached to them that the survivors can use to search for The Animatronic, travel through the door they're looking through, and even reveal The Animatronic's aura to the team. Using the cameras and security doors depletes the universal survivor power in 1-second intervals, or more when using a security door. Losing the power forces survivors to wait for it to reboot before they can use the cameras and security doors again; though, The Animatronic can still travel through the security doors during this downtime. If The Animatronic enters a security door while a survivor is traveling through, or the other way around, it will cause The Animatronic to jumpscare and grab the survivor.
Reception[]
The DLC was received mostly positively, with it's Steam Page gaining a review status of "Very Positive," with 88% of 1,700+ users reviewing the DLC positively. On PlayStation consoles, the DLC was also received positively, with a rating of 4.88 out of 5 stars based on 662 reviews. On Xbox consoles, the DLC was also received positively, with a rating of 4.8 of 5 stars from 125 reviews.
Players that reviewed positively noted their satisfaction with The Animatronic as a killer, finding him fun to play as, though some players didn't care for his kit/playstyle when playing as or against him, and players enjoyed the Freddy Fazbear's Pizza map. Players that reviewed negatively noted that Springtrap felt like a clone or mashup of several other killers; some criticized Springtrap's lack of range and some about him feeling overpowered, finding him unfun to play against.
Characters[]
Springtrap - The Animatronic[]
The Animatronic's portrait.
“The Animatronic always comes back. His personal perks, Help Wanted, Phantom Fear, and Haywire, help him compromise generators, make Survivors scream, and regress exit gate switches.”
— Killer select,Dead by Daylight
The Animatronic, also known as Springtrap, is the fortieth playable killer, and seventeenth franchise killer, in Dead by Daylight; who is voiced by PJ Heywood.[12] He has a max base speed of 4.4m/s, 4.6m/s without the Fire Axe, a base Terror Radius of 24m, and his height is average. His killer difficulty is Hard.[13]
Loadout[]
Power
Fazbear's Fright
The Animatronic lived to kill, even when his mechanical costume became his tomb.
SPECIAL ABILITY: FIRE AXE
The Animatronic is armed with a Fire Axe that he can throw at Survivors. If the Axe hits a Survivor, the weapon becomes embedded in them, leaving the Survivor vulnerable. Survivors must remove the Axe before they can be healed.
SPECIAL MAP FEATURE: SECURITY SYSTEM
At the start of the trial, 7 Security Doors are spawned randomly throughout the map. These Doors can be accessed by both Survivors and The Animatronic.
Each Security Door has a Camera attached to it. Interacting with the Door gives the Survivor access to the Camera View, allowing the Survivor to cycle through every Camera in the map, travel to the Door they are currently looking through, and potentially reveal The Animatronic's aura to the team.
Using the Cameras and Doors too often will deplete the limited battery power available, forcing Survivors to wait until the system reboots. The Animatronic may travel between Security Doors with or without battery power.
If The Animatronic enters a Security Door, they may choose to exit from any other Door in the map. Moving to a Door already in use by a Survivor will cause The Animatronic to grab that Survivor.
Retrieve
Retrieving the Fire Axe after thrown.
Grab

Perks
Help Wanted
Try as they might, you know how to stay one step ahead of your guests. When you damage a generator, it becomes compromised. When the compromised generator is completed, your successful basic attack cooldowns are 25% faster for 40/50/60 seconds. "You only think you are in control..." - Springtrap
Phantom Fear
You've always had a reputation for startling unsuspecting guests. When a Survivor within your Terror Radius looks at you, they scream and you see their aura for 2 seconds. This perk has a 80/70/60-second cooldown. "Excellent. Your screams please me." - Springtrap
Haywire
For some reason, machinery has a habit of failing when you are near. Exit gate switches with at least 50% progress regress at a rate of 40/45/50% of gate opening speed. While they are regressing, Survivors see the exit gate lights flicker randomly. "There will be no redemption for you." - Springtrap
Add-ons
Greasy Paper Plate Common
It sticks to everything it touches. No amount of soap can wash it off. Increases the time required for Survivors to remove the Axe by 10%.
We all need a little help sometimes... While winding up an axe throw, see a preview of the starting trajectory.
Restaurant Menu Common
The lamination is peeling and crusty. How appetizing. Decreases the minimum time required to retrieve an axe embedded in the environment by 10%.
Rotten Pizza Common
Food poisoning is no laughing matter. Increases the duration of Killer Instinct from the axe by 50%.
Office Phone Uncommon
He tried to leave messages as a warning. He didn't last long, either. Survivors within 12 meters of a Survivor with an embedded Axe gain the Oblivious and - if injured - Broken status effects. Oblivious prevents Survivors from hearing or being affected by the Killer's Terror Radius. Broken prevents Survivors from being healed.
Party Hat Uncommon
The party never ends, no matter how much they beg. When an Axe is embedded in the environment: • Increases its area of effect radius to 250% over 3 seconds • Decreases the duration of the area of effect by 50%.
Ripped Curtain Uncommon
Taken from Pirates Cove, caught on the animatronic that lived there. When an Axe hits a survivor, they gain the Hemorrhage and Mangled status effects for 70 seconds. Hemorrhage regresses healing progress when not healing, and increases blood trails left by injured Survivors. This lasts for a set duration or until fully healed. Mangled increases time required to heal by 25% and lasts for a set duration or until fully healed.
Security Guard's Badge Uncommon
The badge comes with certain privileges for whoever carries it. When exiting a Security Door after a teleport, gain the Undetectable status effect for 50% longer. Undetectable hides the Killer's aura, Terror Radius, and Red Stain.
Streamers Uncommon
Employees would throw them over the rafters for a quick decoration. Increases the speed at which you travel through security doors by 20%.
Bonnie's Guitar Strings Rare
Worn strings that are off-tune and liable to snap. Unlocks potential in one's aura reading ability. While moving between Security Doors, the repair progress of generators can be determined by the intensity of their auras.
Chica's Bib Rare
A good way to keep Mr. Cupcake from making a mess. Survivors within the Axe's area of effect gain the Exhausted status effect for 5 seconds. Exhausted prevents Survivors from activating exhausting perks.
A pirate's hook that seems more menacing than playful. Players within range of the Axe's area of effect gain 10% Haste for 6 seconds. Haste increases Killer movement speed.
Freddy's Hat Rare
Gabriel trusted the wrong grown-up. Now he's the star of the show. Increases the Axe's weight while throwing by 100%.
He only takes 10 seconds to draw! While a Survivor has an Axe embedded in them, any rushed interactions they perform reveal their aura to you for 4 seconds. Removing the Axe from themselves reveals their aura to you for 4 seconds.
Access Panel Very Rare
Gaining control over the security doors is key to getting the job done. Your Axe gains the ability to travel through Security Doors, and will exit straight through the connected Security Door.
The celebration lasts all night long, or until no one is left. After an Axe is embedded in a Survivor, both you and that Survivor gain 20% Haste and vault 20% faster. This effect ends if the Axe is removed, or if the distance between you and the Survivor exceeds 32 meters. Haste increases Killer movement speed.
Greater computing power, for greater efficacy. While within the Axe's Area of Effect, pallets, breakable doors, and generators break 25% faster. This effect lingers for 5 seconds after leaving the Area of Effect.
Loot Bag Very Rare
Open the bag, and see what goodies are inside. While a Survivor has an Axe embedded in them: • They gain the Incapacitated status effect • Exit gates will be blocked for them. Incapacitated prevents Survivors from healing, repairing, sabotaging, cleansing, blessing, mending, or using items.
Collecting these tokens comes with a price. Upon throwing the Axe, your Terror Radius is copied to the Axe, until it is reclaimed. You gain the Undetectable status effect for 10 seconds. Undetectable hides the Klller's aura, Terror Radius, and Red Stain.
Molten metal - in the right hands, it's the key to immortality. Upon moving to a Security Door, windows and upright pallets within 16 meters of the destination Door are blocked for 8 seconds.

Trivia[]
General[]
The Yellow Rabbit cosmetic skin for The Animatronic has a voice line saying the phrase "Olly olly oxen free." This phrase is used in children's games to signal that the hiders can come out without losing the game, in the context of Hide-and-Seek. This line shows William's deceptive nature, trying to get the "hiders" to think they're safe.
It was Scott Cawthon's idea to get Matthew Lillard to voice the film-based cosmetic skin for The Animatronic.
Coincidentally, this chapter is Dead by Daylight's first release of its 10-year anniversary lineup, making both the reveal and release align with the 10-year anniversary of both franchises.
This is Dead by Daylight's first chapter to only feature both a new killer and map.
Springtrap is the first killer in Dead by Daylight to have two menu select animations, one of him peaking from the right-side of the screen and another of him walking from the left to right of the screen.
It's speculated that Springtrap is one of the Entity's favorite killers due to him happily stepping into the fog, along with the Entity providing him with a fire axe and an endoskeleton torture device.
In a article posted on the PTB trial of the chapter, it mentions how Springtrap entered the Fog, saying: "The Entity's grand design requires Killers, trapped in a perpetual cycle of endless violence, eliciting no shortage of horror, terror, and panic from Survivors. It's no wonder that Afton found himself in The Entity's sights. In many ways, he represents the perfect Killer; brilliant, cruel, and void of mercy."[14]
Coincidentally, Ghostface is another killer that happily entered the fog, making the Yellow Rabbit skin the second Matthew Lillard-played killer to be a favorite of the Entity.
Glitchtrap shares his voice actor with Nemesis T-Type from the Resident Evil franchise and the Xenomorph from the Alien franchise in the game. He also voiced some of Dredge's wailing sounds.
Yellow Rabbit was transported into the Fog just after the springlocks had started going off and he had been dragged away by the animatronics at the climax of the film.
When Glitchtrap entered the Fog, it was given flesh, bringing his digital existence into a physical world. Despite this, his digital origins remain, being able to teleport in the menu and reappear and its knife having a glitchy effect.
According to the developers of Dead by Daylight, the Glitchtrap within the Fog is a copy made by the Entity and not the original program from Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted.
The Five Nights at Freddy's chapters codename is "Ketchup."
During the 9.2.0 PTB, The Animatronic appeared low poly and was untextured while in the menu.[15]
In an interview, Mathieu Cote, talking about a licensing show, said "[...] I was telling them that we would be interested in doing something with their property [...] and they're like, "Yeah, some of our people talked to Scott." [and] "he told us that if you want your property treated right, you go with Behavior. You go to Dead by Daylight. There are other games out there. Some people will throw a lot of money at you to be in their game-- No, just go on Dead by Daylight." This was a massive seal of approval for Cote.[16]
Shortly after, Cote mentioned that Scott had praised the Dead by Daylight team for respecting the FNaF franchise and managing to create something worthy of representing it.[16]
Prior to the PTB, one of the screenshots of the party room showed a neon light of Freddy Fazbear's face above the arcades entrance. The neon light it seemingly based off of a bootleg LED light seen here. This sign was changed come the PTB.
From May 24 - 27, the Dead by Daylight social medias would post image teasers at 12:00 AM, referencing the starting time of most Five Nights at Freddy's games.
On May 27, they would post a final teaser at 5:55 AM, with the caption, "Can't believe I've made it to the end of my shift." The teaser implies the guard in these posts had died before 6 AM.
There's a random chance for Mr. Cupcake to jump out of a locker when a survivor opens it to hide.[17]
Mr. Cupcake acts similarly to Jones from the Alien franchise crossover map. And, as a fan of Alien himself, Scott might've asked for that secret to be added into the Freddy Fazbear's Pizza map.
Springtrap's loadout refences various parts of the FNaF franchise.
Most of his add-ons are direct references to the franchise.
Notably, "Freddy's Hat" mentions Gabriel's name, "Purple Guy Drawing" references FNaF World, "Office Phone" references both the phone and Ralph, and "Iridescent Remnant" a reference to Remnant.
In the bathrooms, when listening closely, a child's laugh can be heard coming from the chained-up stall.
When the generator next to the show stage is completed, Freddy, Bonnie, and Chica will activate and preform for ~8 seconds before glitching out and turning off.
The eyes on the animatronic heads in the craftroom track the player; a sound can even be heard of the mechanisms moving their eyes.
At the entrance of the pizzeria, there's a phone that can be heard ringing, referencing Ralph, aka Phone Guy.
When entering one of the backrooms of the pizzeria as a survivor, an endoskeleton will pop out of a vent, screaming.
There's a chance for two of the ovens in the kitchen to turn on and shake its doors.
Some of Springtrap's voice lines are taken from various parts in FNaF's lifespan.
Notably, the line, "The darkest pit of hell is open for business," is a reference to Henry Emily's speech from the "Completion" ending from Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator, where he says "Although, for one of you, the darkest pit of Hell has opened to swallow you whole, so don't keep the Devil waiting, old friend."
The lines, "You will not be spared, You will not be saved" and "I am here to claim what is left of you," are both taken from Nightmare's UCN appearance, and used by Springtrap in Special Delivery.
The line, "Lets pull you apart," is an altered version of one of Nightmare Fredbear's lines from UCN.
The Yellow Rabbit's line, "Where are those wretched little beasts," is referencing the scene in the first film, when Afton calls the animatronics "wretched, rotten little beasts."
In the dining room, there's a hole in the ceiling that is in the shape of a rabbit's head.
The way Springtrap swipes his pizza knife after stabbing a survivor is a reference to Ghostface in Scream.
William Afton also swipes his knife in the Five Nights at Freddy's film.
There's a chance Glitchtrap is aware of the player, as its animations show him waving and gesturing to follow him, similarly what he does in Help Wanted.
Glitchtrap has animations of him shushing, notably one of its menu idle animations is Glitchtrap shushing and gesturing for someone to follow it. This is a reference the "Trapped" Ending from Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted.
Behind-the-Scenes[]
When thinking about chapters, they ask themselves what a nightmare of the property would be. Their answer for Five Nights at Freddy's was the most horrific rendition of Springtrap, and that's what they tried to do.[18]
There were other options being considered for the killer, but in the end, and after talking with Scott Cawthon, everyone quickly agreed that Springtrap was the right choice to satisfy both the DbD and FNaF communities.[19]
On June 20, 2025, various members of the Dead by Daylight team were interviewed in an AMA on the verified Five Nights at Freddy's Discord server. The most notable answers were:
Eric Pope's favorite Springtrap skin is one that hasn't been revealed yet.
It's later mentioned, by Rose, that a Blighted skin for Springtrap is planned to release around Halloween. It is unknown currently if the Blighted skin is the same as Pope's favorite.
Springtrap, his skins, Yellow Rabbit, and Glitchtrap were put into Dead by Daylight, not fully how they are in Scott's canon, but as nightmare memories of what the characters are.
Scott was involved during each step of production and wanted everything to make sense with his world. They mentioned Scott is one of few partners to have been so hands-on during production.
The team was asked about Foxy's absence in the Freddy Fazbear's Pizza map, after a period of silent from the team, Rose said "we did not forget about Foxy. Period."
The team is open to adding Springtrap to the game 2v8 mode, though the biggest struggle holding the idea back is gameplay balance.
Charms are currently not planned for Five Nights at Freddy's, but due to its success, the idea is on the table for the future.
The team is open to the idea of adding a masked version of Yellow Rabbit's skin, though due to the lack of flexibility of the cosmetic system, it might not come to fruition.
When asked about the lack of a FNaF Survivor, Mathieu Côté said something around the lines of the main survivor in Five Nights at Freddy's is the player and they wanted that experience to feel more personal. Jason added that Springtrap jumpscaring the player in his Mori was a decision they purposefully did, so it feels like Springtrap isn't jumpscaring the Survivor, but the player. Rose said "How much are you willing to sacrifice" and Pope said "What does your heart tell you?" Finally, they mentioned that FNaF Survivors could be added in the future.
A second chapter of Five Nights at Freddy's is possible in the future, though, not confirmed.
