List of Minor Characters[]
Kasey's Mother[]
Kasey's unnamed mother was rather neglectful of Kasey. She worked nights, slept days, and gave Kasey a look of surprise and annoyance whenever she came home from school. Dinner would usually be a bowl of cereal or a sandwich before her mother went to work at the club, and she's instructed Kasey to go to the apartment next door and speak to the old lady living there if there was an emergency. When her mom got evicted for not paying the rent, they moved to another apartment that was smaller and dirtier, attracting cockroaches and ants. This became a cycle. Kasey's mother also had a string of boyfriends that never really seemed to stick around. One day, when Kasey was a teenager, her mother finally found a boyfriend with a steady job and stuck around. When he refused to have Kasey around, however, her mother kicked her out before she was seventeen.
Pink Dress Girl[]
Pink Dress Girl is a girl that Kasey robs outside of the dance club frequented by college kids. She's wearing a short, light-pink dress with impossibly high pink heels. Pink Dress Girl had a pink designer purse hanging from a skinny strap over her shoulders. When she leaves the club, she was talking loudly and giggling with her boyfriend. Kasey attempts to cut the strap off with scissors, but someone bumps into her and the scissors cut into Pink Dress Girl's skin. Her arms begins to bleed and when the girl spots Kasey she runs away.
Brenda[]
- Not what you were looking for? See Brenda (disambiguation).
Brenda is a waitress who works at the Royal Café. She has bleached-blonde hair, and Kasey estimates her to be anywhere from thirty-five to sixty-five years old.
When Kasey enters the diner looking for a job, Brenda greets her and yells for Jimmy. When Jimmy comes out of the kitchen, she explains that Kasey is there for the job, her tone revealing that she didn't think Kasey would be a good candidate. As Kasey begins to work at the diner, Brenda takes a dislike to her and asks her questions, like if Kasey is even her real name since she didn't tell Jimmy her last name. When Brenda notices that her regulars are tipping less than usual, she tells Jimmy that Kasey is stealing them off the table. When the two confront Kasey, she denies it. Brenda is furious when Jimmy doesn't fire Kasey, instead telling her that she's being watched.
Jimmy[]
- Not what you were looking for? See Jimmy (disambiguation).
Jimmy is presumably the manager or owner of the Royal Café. He has olive skin, tired eyes, and an apron stained with grease of various ages.
When Brenda calls for him, he comes out of the kitchen and is told that Kasey is there for the job. He asks if she has ever bused tables and washed dishes before, and when Kasey says yes he points out how small she is and asks if she can handle the heavy bus pans and dish trays. Kasey assures him that she's small but strong, and Jimmy has her start immediately. He explains how easy her job is and explains that she gets paid minimum wage in cash at the end of the week, and she gets a free meal per shift. As Kasey works at the diner, she learns that Jimmy yells a lot and is a good cook. He tells Kasey that she's too skinny, and he makes her his blue plate specials of meatloaf, turkey, and dressing.
Eventually, Kasey begins taking half of the tips left by costumers. One day, Kasey comes into work to see Jimmy and Brenda sitting at a booth waiting for her. Jimmy explains that Brenda told him that she's been getting less in tips, and while Brenda continues to accuse Kasey she denies it. Kasey asks if she's being fired, and Jimmy tells her he's going to watch her.
Helen[]
Helen is a saleslady who works at Unique Fashions. She wore a canary-yellow dress with a bright scarf and perfectly applied makeup. Kasey says she's around her mother's age.
Looking for proper clothes to wear to her job interview, Kasey visits Unique Fashions and is greeted by Helen. Kasey finds a perfect dress to wear and Helen walks up behind her, asking if he wants to try it on. Kasey explains that she doesn't know her size, and Helen determines that she's a six. She tells Kasey that she hasn't been a six in a long time, mentioning her three children and asking if Kasey has any. Helen then points Kasey in the direction of the waiting room and goes to help Mrs. Templeton with a pink suit jacket. Kasey tries hiding the dress in her backpack and only pays for shoes, but when she tries leaving an alarm rings. Helen at first thinks she didn't scan it right and approaches her, along with the manager. She checks the receipt and shows it to the manager, and is shocked to see the dress in Kasey's backpack.
Mrs. Templeton[]
Mrs. Templeton is an elderly costumer at Unique Fashions. She had perfectly groomed hair and was dressed elegantly in a cream-colored pants suit. Kasey first sees her trying on a pink suit jacket with the help of Helen. Later, once Kasey is caught stealing a dress, Mrs. Templeton offers to buy it. The manager at first tells her not to, but Mrs. Templeton insists that she's a good costumer and the costumer is always right. The manager questions if Kasey is telling the truth about needing the dress for a job interview, and Mrs. Templeton says it's a risk she's willing to take. Kasey thanks her and offers to repay Mrs. Templeton, but Mrs. Templeton waves her off and says you just help others when they need it.
Unique Fashions Manager[]
The unnamed manager of Unique Fashions. She's described as being well-dressed. As the alarm goes off due to Kasey stealing a dress, the manager walks up with Helen and checks on her. She has Kasey open her backpack and, upon finding the dress, grabs her by the arms and goes to call the police. Kasey begs her not to, explaining the situation, and when Mrs. Templeton offers the buy the dress the manager at first denies the offer. Mr. Templeton insists, and when the manager asks if she's lying about the job interview Mr. Templeton claims she's willing to take that risk. The manager lets go and allows Mrs. Templeton to say for it.
Kasey's Mother's Boyfriend[]
Kasey's mother's unnamed boyfriend began dating her mother when Kasey was a teenager. He had a steady job and could support her mother, but didn't want a teenager around "freeloading." He says that he moved out of his parent's house and got a job when he was Kasey's age, which is why he was so successful. He makes Kasey's mother chose between him and Kasey, resulting in Kasey getting kicked out before her seventeenth birthday.
Unnamed Elderly Lady[]
An unnamed elderly lady sits next to Kasey at the bus station. She has gray hair and skin a couple shades darker than Kasey's. The lady wore a butter-yellow flowered dress and a matching hat.
After falling asleep on a bench at the bus station, Kasey is accidently woken up ay 4:30 by the elderly lady. She apologizes and asks Kasey where she's heading. The lady then explains that she's going to Chicago to see her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren and asks if Kasey has family in Memphis. She asks if Kasey's got a job lined up, and when hearing that she'll find something she praises her and says that she loves seeing young people with initiative. The lady offers Kasey a homemade ham biscuit and begins to head for the restroom. Before she goes, she tells Kasey that she looks like a young lady who's running away from something and, in her experience, running away from your problems just end up following you. The lady tells Kasey that it's better to build bridges rather than burn them and leaves.
