Plot[]

Kasey had grown up with a mother who cared more for partying than caring for her daughter. When she was a teenager, her mother got a new boyfriend with a steady job, but didn’t want to spend money on a teenager. He claimed he had moved out of his parents’ house around Kasey’s age, and so Kasey was kicked out before her seventeenth birthday. Her teachers begged her to stay in high school since she had solid grades and could get college scholarships due to being an athlete, but she needed money. Kasey jumped between dead-end jobs and was constantly moving between apartments and friends’ homes. One day, she saw a twenty-dollar bill left alone and took the money. Kasey began stealing more and was eventually approached by two men at a street festival. The men, Jack and AJ, were thieves that wanted to make Kasey part of their team. Since they were willing to share their knowledge of how to survive on the streets, she agreed to join them.

One night, Kasey and Jack spot a woman and her two young children standing outside Circus Baby’s Pizza World. While waiting for the right moment to strike, the woman puts her daughter’s goody bag in her purse. Kasey quickly steals it and returns back to the abandoned warehouse passing as their home. She finds eighty-seven dollars and two credit cards, and they split the money amongst themselves. While Jack and AJ party, Kasey stays behind and looks through the goody bag, finding a pair of cardboard glasses decorated with a picture of a robot ballerina. Putting them makes her feel dizzy and she puts the glasses in her jacket for later, feeling guilty about stealing from kids. The next day, Kasey uses her share of the money to eat at a nearby restaurant. She decides to take a walk in the park and looks at the cardboard glasses again, finding a tiny slip of rolled up paper taped to the glasses’ left earpiece reading, “Put on the glasses, and Ballora will dance for you.” Kasey feels the same dizziness from before, but with the sun out she sees a beautiful hologram of Ballora doing a pirouette. She is filled with sadness and regret, and eventually begins to feel sick and takes them off.

Kasey shows Jack and AJ, but they claim that the glasses only make everything blue. She tests them and sees Ballora, but quickly takes them off after feeling dizzy and uneasy. After buying a ton of food from a gas station, Kasey takes another walk in the park, unable to get the image of Ballora out of her head. She puts on the glasses and notices that Ballora’s pirouetting makes the fall leaves fly around her, and she’s getting closer. Since it’s Friday night, Kasey, Jack, and AJ wait outside clubs. While the guys target a few bars, Kasey waits outside a dance club until a girl in a pink dress comes out with her boyfriend. She uses scissors to cut Pink Dress Girl’s purse free, accidently cutting into her skin. Kasey runs to the warehouse feeling incredibly guilty. The next day, she spots the leaves swirl and confirms it’s Ballora. Jack puts the glasses on again and sees nothing, and he throws them away to make Kasey feel better. They decide to use the other credit card they stole at All-Mart, but as they’re heading towards the bus Kasey retrieves the glasses. The credit card is declined and as they head back to the warehouse Kasey spots the leaves at the park again.

That night, the three go to the train station. However, just before Kasey can grab a wallet Jack pulls her away and informs her that police are there. Back at the warehouse, Kasey reaches into her jacket pocket for warmth and feels the glasses. She panics and runs outside to put the glasses on, seeing Ballora under a streetlight. Kasey worries what will happen if Ballora keeps getting closer, and wonders if fleeing the city where she stole the glasses will stop her. Once Jack and AJ fall asleep, Kasey takes her belongings and her share of the money and buys a bus ticket to Memphis. She falls asleep on a bench but is accidentally woken up by an elderly lady. She apologizes and the two talk about where they’re heading. After giving Kasey some food, the old lady tells her that, from her experiences, whatever you’re running away from ends up following you and it’s better to build than burn bridges. On the bus, Kasey sleeps excited for her fresh start.

Once in Memphis, Kasey finds a cheap motel and quickly takes a shower. Walking the streets, she comes across an old diner looking for employees. She meets a waitress and the owner, Jimmy. After only a few questions, Jimmy hires her and she gets to work washing dishes. The waitress she met, Brenda, is suspicious of Kasey. One afternoon, Kasey sees two five-dollar bills and, unable to help herself, takes half of the tip. She decides to only do that whenever Brenda is away, but one day she arrives at the diner and is confronted by Brenda and Jimmy. Kasey keeps denying Brenda’s claims, and Jimmy tells her that he’ll keep an eye on her from now on. On the way home, Kasey spots swirling leaves and decides to put on the glasses. When she sees Ballora closer than ever, she yells and causes a scene. That night, Kasey has a nightmare where she’s in a fancy theater and Ballora is dancing around, revealing banners that say “LIAR,” “THIEF,” and “YOU.” She wakes up and immediately packs up. At the bus station, Kasey puts on the glasses and sees Ballora even closer. She promises to really start over in Nashville.

Once at a new motel, Kasey looks in the newspaper for jobs. She finds one answering phone calls that needs zero experience, but has nothing proper to wear to a job interview. Kasey eventually comes across a store and finds a crimson dress with cream-colored flowers. Remembering being told red was her color, she tries it on using help from the saleslady to determine her size. Remembering she needs better shoes, Kasey finds tan flats but is unable to afford them. She hides the dress in her backpack promising this is the last time, but when she tries to leave alarms go off and she spots hundreds of leaves swirling outside. The saleslady and the manager search Kasey and find the dress, but before they call the police an elderly lady offers to buy the dress, since she can tell Kasey’s desperate. Kasey thanks her and sits at a nearby park with tears in her eyes. She hopes this gets rid of Ballora, but when she puts the glasses on she is right in front of her. Kasey runs back to the motel but sees Ballora scratching her window. She knows there’s only one more option left and retrieves the driver’s license of the woman she robbed outside of Circus Baby’s Pizza World.

Kasey manages to meet a long-haul driver who is heading in the direction of the woman’s house, with Kasey seeing Ballora’s face pressed against the passenger side window. Once at the house, she knocks on the door and explains to the woman, named Sarah Avery, who she is. Sarah is glad that Kasey has returned what she stole and is trying to make amends, so she lets her in for tea. Inside, Kasey meets the girl, Isabella, and returns the glasses to her. When Isabella puts on the glasses, she looks in awe at Ballora and then starts to dance.

Speculation[]

WitheredChica-Icon "I was the first! I have seen everything!"

This section archives a lot of theories and speculation, which usually occurs from pre-release media, or just things that are still unknown, so please keep that in mind while reading. The page will continue to be updated with the most accurate information as more solid evidence is supplied.

  • Since Ballora is not directly present in the story, she can be seen in the glasses. It is implied that the glasses seem to be connected with an illusion disc, making it seem that Ballora is there even though she is not. Yet, it is still unexplained how the glasses make Ballora interact with the real world. At the end, when Kasey gives back the glasses she stole from the girl and the mom, earlier in the story, the girl puts the glasses on, but not only she can see Ballora, but it seems that Ballora has taken possession over her, making her dance ballet. Ballora seems to also have a connection with Glitchtrap, as in the story, every time Kasey wears the glasses, Ballora comes closer to her, eventually when she reached the final stage, she would take over the body. This is similar to Glitchtrap, hence due to the fact that in Help Wanted, Glitchtrap comes closer to the player every time, eventually taking possession over the body to revive himself.
  • Since Kasey has felt dizzy whenever she used novelty glasses, this could mean that illusion discs were being used in them, possibly making Ballora visible.
  • Another possibility is that the Ballora glasses used a similar technology to the VANNI Network from RUIN. Ballora being able to manipulate and even change her surroundings while Kasey is wearing the glasses is extremely similar to The Entity's abilities. It is worth noting that the Ballora in this story has blue eyes, a trait only shared with the Ballora from Help Wanted 2, which also has a protagonist that uses the VANNI Mask.

Trivia[]

  • A store named All-Mart is featured in this story and The Cliffs. It is most likely a parody of Walmart.
  • It is still unexplained if Ballora wanted Kasey to give back the glasses or wanted to just creep her out of who she was as a person.
  • It's unclear whether Kasey narrowly misses Ballora's attack, and she ends up possessing Isabella instead, or if Isabella is just happy to be dancing with Ballora.
  • There was illustration made for this story, but the illustrations were ultimately scrapped for the whole series. Although it was reused for its own page in The Ultimate Guide.
    • This illustration shows Kasey looking over her shoulder at Ballora dancing in the distance creating a vortex of leaves around her. Both are in a park.
  • This is the third story with an ambiguous ending that's left up to interpretation. The others are Count the Ways and Fetch.
  • This is the twelfth story to be connected to Stitchwraith Stingers, the others being To Be Beautiful, Out of Stock, The Real Jake, 1:35 A.M., Fetch, The Man in Room 1280, Step Closer, You're the Band, Into the Pit, Hide-and-Seek and Blackbird.
    • In the #11 epilogue, Detective Larson visits in one of his hallucinations the same warehouse where Kasey and her friends lived, he's also attacked by Eleanor here.
      • This means that Eleanor was somehow involved in the events of this story, possibly infecting the novelty glasses with agony making Ballora going after Kasey, or being Ballora itself by usage of illusion disc or the heart pendant.
