List of Minor Characters[]
Jeanie[]
Jeanie is Patricia's best friend. She is short and plump with blonde hair. The two knew each other since they were six and together went through school, college, and grad school, both in art. Jeanie was Patricia's maid of honor when she married Hayden, and she later became Susie and Samantha's godmother. Jeanie would knit clothes for Susie, and when Susie became attached to the tree in their yard Jeanie knitted it a scarf every year as well. Jeanie also told Susie that she was "plugged in," meaning she saw the world differently from others.
After Susie is lured away and killed, Jeanie comforts Patricia while she is grieving, either over phone or in-person. Susie was murdered while wearing the sweater and jeans Jeanie knitted for her. One day, she wears a wide-brimmed straw hat along with Patricia when talking to her in the porch. Jeanie informs Patricia that she's still knitted Oliver's scarf for this year, and Patricia begins to blame herself for not discouraging Susie from anthropomorphizing. Jeanie tells her not all of the killed children were like Susie, and when Patricia continues to torment herself with what happened to Susie Jeanie helps her get over it.
When Samantha begins searching the house for Gretchen, she looks through Patricia's stuff. Patricia calls Jeanie about it, and she tells her that Samantha probably had a reason to. She tells Patricia to just let it go, then tells her to let it all go.
Drew[]
Drew is one of the kids in Samantha's class. He's a small boy with blond spiky hair that sticks up all over his head, and Samantha thinks he's cute.
One day, he passes by Samantha's house on a scooter he didn't really know how to use. The four other kids in his group yell at him to catch up so they can get by her house quicker, and when they talk about how Samantha has changed since Susie's death Drew comments that they can't really blame her. Later, he approaches Samantha alone. He gives her his condolences and asks if she's seen Susie's ghost. He notices Samantha gets upset and explains that he believes in ghosts and thinks that people can stay around after death if they want. He saw his uncle the day of his death, and a couple years later his uncle came back waiting for his father to forgive him. Drew explains that he thinks ghosts hang around if they want something.
Rhonda[]
Rhonda is Samantha's current counselor. She has long black hair and big brown eyes with thick black brows.
Before Rhonda, Samantha had visited two other people that tried to help, but Samantha didn't like them. With Rhonda, Samantha enjoys her more serious nature, although she doesn't like how she was always smiling. She visits her three times a week. Patricia explains to Jeanie that Rhonda said Samantha is stuck and nothing she's doing will get her to talk. Patricia considers taking Samantha to a different counselor, and when Rhonda reveals this information to Samantha she opens up about what's holding her back. She explains what happened with Gretchen, a doll they were supposed to share. Rhonda tells Samantha that she doesn't think she's stuck anymore, and when Rhonda asks where the doll is now Samantha answers that she doesn't know.
Chloe[]
Chloe is one of Susie's friends. She played charades at her birthday party, which upset her since no one guessed what she was doing correctly.
Unnamed Classmates[]
Along with Drew, four other unnamed kids walk by Samantha's house. Three of the kids are girls walking bikes, and the last is a tall boy messing around with a skateboard. Two of the girls have dark hair and wore jeans and blue hoodies. The other girl has reddish hair and wore a black leather jacket with a light pink shirt underneath. They walk past Samantha and Susie's house quickly because they find it creepy. They mock Samantha as they pass by, talking about how she has changed since Susie's death.
