“Hey, Oz? I always thought you were pretty cool, too.” |
Chip is a major character in Into the Pit, the first story from Fazbear Frights 1: Into the Pit. He is a young boy that Oswald befriends when visiting Freddy Fazbear's Pizza in the past. He appears in an expanded role in the story's two adaptations, the video game Five Nights at Freddy's: Into the Pit, and the interactive novel Return to the Pit.
Physical Appearance[]
Chip is around the same age as Oswald, wearing a polo (light yellow, then baby-blue, and later peach-colored) with the collar turned up, tucked into what appears to be a pair of dad jeans. He also wears huge white tennis shoes.[2] Chip has poofy hair which he spends a lot of time fixing.
In the graphic novel, Chip has blonde hair and blue eyes. In the game adaptation, Chip has curly brown hair, a yellow baseball cap and shirt, a blue vest, jeans, and black shoes.
Personality[]
Chip is kind and far more laid-back than his friend Mike; Oswald sees him as "cool." He is the first to reach out to Oswald, and is very friendly and inviting towards him; he also immediately notices that Oswald is new, implying he knows most of the children in town. He is also rather generous, never once having asked for Oswald to pay for any of the games or food the three indulge in. He does occasionally joke about how out-of-touch Oswald seems to be, but is excited to one day take him to the movies. While he likes the arcade at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, he dislikes the animatronics and finds them creepy. He also is afraid of clowns.
Return to the Pit features a more bitter adult Chip in one route. He has become dedicated to defeating the Yellow Rabbit, and is part of a team that hunts it. He is a little mad about getting older, and acts more responsible than he did in the 1980s. He is very proud of his daughter and loves her dearly.
History[]
Chip was a young boy of around ten years old in 1985. He would frequent Freddy Fazbear's Pizza with his best friend, Mike, where they would often use the arcade and enjoy the pizza. In the game adaptation, Chip says that his father works at the new local mill.
When Oswald first finds himself in 1985 Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, Chip accidently bumps into him and he jumps more than usual. Chip apologizes, then comments that he hasn't seen Oswald at Freddy's before. Oswald remarks that the games in the pizzeria are old, which Chip is shocked to hear since Freddy's has the newest games in town. Chip then introduces himself and his friend Mike, inviting Oswald to join them in playing Skee-Ball. Mike easily beat Chip and Oswald three times, and the three spent the whole time joking around. However, neither boy from the past notices the Yellow Rabbit standing in the doorway. When Oswald has to go, Chip says farewell, hoping to see him later.
Oswald returns the next day and Chip invites him to eat some pizza he and Mike had just ordered, explaining that they had ordered a large. While eating, Mike comments how he's come to find the animatronic characters creepy now that he's old, and Chip says that it's weird that things you liked as a kid become creepy when you're older, like clowns. After eating the pizza, the three play some Skee-Ball and air hockey. When they run low on tokens, Oswald thanks them and says his good-byes.
Oswald makes returning to see Chip and Mike a regular occurrence. The two would talk about movies and shows they liked, usually mentioning a title Oswald doesn't recognize. One day, the three sit at a booth drinking sodas and talk, trying to ignore the animatronics' annoying music as much as possible. Chip comments that he liked a movie called The Eternal Song, which Mike disagrees with. Chip asks Oswald about it, but Oswald hasn't seen it. Chip wants to figure out Oswald's tastes and asks for a film he likes, which he answers with E.T. Mike comments that the film is old, having released three years ago, and Chip says that they need to bring Oswald up to date. Mike then suggests playing Skee-Ball, but Oswald turns it down since he feels guilty the two are paying for him. Chip claims not to have noticed his lack of money and says he's cool with it. When Oswald suddenly has pockets full of tokens, Chip and Mike are initially confused, but then grin and start raking the coins into their soda cups.
Oswald doesn't see Chip and Mike again after this, as his next visit to Freddy's is full of chaos and he's led away by the Yellow Rabbit before he can see if they're okay. He initially is worried about them, but eventually accepts that he cannot return to the past again.
The game adaptation of Into the Pit takes place over a shorter period of time at first, with Oswald only going to the past once before the rabbit attacks, but then extends to a longer period of time, having him return to the pit for five nights before finding his father.
When Oswald arrives in the past, he runs into Chip and Mike, who are in the dining area of the restaurant. They are friendly towards him and invite him to play Pizza-Roller with them, which Mike is best at. Chip offers to play as "it" first in a game of tag, but when he finds the other boys easily, he agrees that they should come up with a more difficult game. They play hide-and-seek, and he hides in a vent in a back room. Mike hears him and finds him, and Chip says that he bets he can find Oswald before Mike. They leave, but get caught up in the chaos of the Missing Children Incident in the arcade, as soon as the Yellow Rabbit starts its attack.
The rabbit manages to capture Chip and ties him to a whack-a-mole-style game. Bonnie the Rabbit guards him, repeatedly hitting him on the head with a mallet until Oswald returns on Night Three and finds them. Oswald distracts Bonnie by luring him away with his guitar and then goes through the vent back to the arcade to free Chip. He assures Chip that he's already freed Mike and asks if he's seen his father. The two are approached by Freddy Fazbear and the Yellow Thing, and Chip flees the location.
As Return to the Pit is an Interactive Novel, Oswald has many possible routes and endings depending on readers' choice. Otherwise, the book's lore is more similar to the Fazbear Frights version than the game, as the Rabbit's attack only occurs over two days rather than five, and the original short's storyline can be followed very closely.
During the first half of the story, when Oswald goes to the past, he has a few alternate routes to take. Oswald can leave Chip and Mike on either the first or second day to follow the Yellow Thing. These routes do not end well. On the second day, Oswald also wins at an arcade game, and has a choice between three prizes: a Freddy Fazbear action figure, a flashlight, or a pair of yellow bunny ears. The boys will play with the prize before going to eat pizza.
Chip has an expanded role in one possible route. It should be noted this timeline has debatable trustworthiness, as one route has Oswald's neighbor inexplicably replaced with Chica, implying that either more animatronics can escape out of the ballpit or that Oswald is not within the real world.
Following the Missing Children Incident, Chip met with several children who had seen the Yellow Rabbit and knew of it and others traveling through time and causing more incidents. They had no proof, but Chip became convinced that the creature was real. Mike would move away the following year, and they would not talk for fifteen years. He eventually would grow up and have a daughter, Gabrielle. As an adult, he would join a team of adults dedicated to taking down the Yellow Rabbit.
He and his team would move back to his childhood town at the beginning of a school year, making base in an abandoned barn. As he drives in town, he sees Oswald running down the street. He lets him into the car, and when Oswald recognizes him, he realizes that the time-travel was real and that Oswald knows where the Rabbit lives. If Oswald refuses to join his team, he will sadly let him leave, but Oswald will be hit by a car and killed. If Oswald accepts joining the team, he brings him to his isolated house and introduces him to Gabrielle, who he lets stay home from school to help. He calls a meeting, but does not realize that the group's leader is the Yellow Rabbit in disguise. If Oswald points this out, he will not believe him and lock him in a closet, resulting in the rabbit killing everyone. If Oswald does not point this out, he will gather weapons with the rest of the group, having a conversation with Oswald about growing up. He drives with Oswald, Gabrielle, and another team member to the Pizzeria, where he orders Jeff to leave and searches for the rabbit. When Oswald dives for the pit, the Rabbit turns around and bites off Chip's head, killing him and starting a gunfight. There is no way for Chip or Oswald to survive this route.Trivia[]
- Chip's in-game appearances differs greatly from the novel, with him wearing a shirt and vest rather than a polo and having a baseball cap instead of poofy hair.
