Plot[]
Billy wakes up in a hospital, remembering all that had happened to him. He’s confused as to how he got there after being crushed in the compactor when a nurse named Gloria enters and gives him some water. Billy notices that he can feel his right arm and left leg, and Gloria goes to get Dr. Herrera, the doctor in charge of Billy. Dr. Herrera explains that no one knows how Billy lived, calling it dumb luck. The junkyard owner is a bird-watcher and saw a rare bird on top of the station wagon, which led to him seeing blood coming from the car before it was too late. Billy suffered severe injuries, but the doctors dealt with the damage and removed all his modifications. He’s been under a medically induced coma for a few weeks to help heal.
Some of Billy’s modifications couldn’t be undone, such as his amputated right leg and left arm, the exterior cartilage of his ears, and his tongue. Oddly, Billy’s left leg was only surgically altered to appear as if it had been amputated, with Doc seemingly having gotten lazy or greedy. Using files from Billy’s house, the police raided the old mental hospital and found a freezer full of limbs, one of which was Billy’s right arm. When Dr. Herrera removed the modifications, it came out as one coherent piece held together with wires and Billy’s own connective tissue and flesh. She put what was removed in a storage vault downstairs. Dr. Herrera explains that Billy’s body has healed incredibly fast but he will need physical therapy, and when she offers prosthetics he declines them. Dr. Herrera then explains that the state wants a psychological evaluation, and if he’s deemed competent he’ll get to make the decisions going forwards.
Billy is both excited and terrified to make his own decisions for once. The next day he meets his physical therapist, Angie. She helps him up and recases his remaining leg in bandages and a black, padded brace. After helping him use a crutch, Billy is once again told he’ll need prosthetics and he declines again. The next day, Billy feels judged by the doctor doing his psychological evaluation due to his lack of ears. He tells Gloria, and she returns with a Rasta beanie hat for Billy to wear. Shortly after, Billy is visited by people from his past. First is Dr. Lingstrom, now wanting to be referred to by Alice (or Ah-i since Billy can’t speak very well). Next is Clark and Peter, who are happy to see Billy again and give him their phone numbers and address. After a visit from the two people who delivered him things, Billy’s final guest is his grandma.
That night, Billy wakes up to hear a voice calling for him. Although he doesn’t want to, he feels drawn to the voice and makes his way out of his room. Billy goes to an elevator that opens the second he reaches it. The elevator descends to the third basement, where a janitor is leaving for the night. Billy makes his way into a room at the end of the hall and discovers the voice coming from a cabinet. He goes to open it despite knowing inside is his other half, but a security guard finds him and returns him to his room. Billy wakes up again later to the sound of clicking and something wet. He can see a trail of blood and motor oil and attempts to run away, but hospital staff catch him. They strap him to his bed and inject him with something to knock him out. His other half tries to convince Billy to let him back in, peeking its head above the side of Billy’s bed before he passes out.
When Billy wakes up, he quickly calls for Gloria despite not remembering why he feels freaked out. Gloria tells him that she thinks he had a panic attack, and Billy is confused by his frightened state. Billy leaves the following week, going to live with his grandma in the country. Billy has spoken as little as possible, although he isn’t sure if it’s because of the night he can’t remember or living with his grandma. Alice had told Billy that it will take some time for him to figure out who he truly is, leaving him somewhat nervous. After a tour of the house and eating dinner, Billy plays checkers with his grandma. Once finished, he goes to get his computer and discovers it’s gone. His grandma tells him she got rid of it, and also reveals she doesn’t have a TV or cell phones, instead using an old rotary phone in her room. Billy considers returning to the hospital, but a bit of red sauce on his mouth makes him remember his encounter with B-7.
Billy decides to be a dutiful grandson for his grandma. Over the next few days, he establishes a routine. In the morning, Billy will sit with his grandma for breakfast. After his grandma’s afternoon nap, the two will sit on the porch with a drink. After dinner, Billy and his grandma will play board games. Each night before bed, Billy hears his grandma’s phone ring. Billy learns that his father is in Peru, working for a company harvesting rain forests. Billy uses his skills at household repairs, mainly electrical and plumbing issues, to aid his grandma. Five days after first moving in, Billy’s grandma takes him to church. Billy enjoys his time there, and a man named Frank approaches him and offers to take him fishing next week. That night Billy feels excited to move forward in his life. However, he begins to feel unsettled by his grandma’s ringing phone.
The following week passes by the same, but the more the phone rings the more Billy gets bothered by it. When Frank takes Billy fishing, he learns that Frank is an author who writes private-eye novels. After hearing about the stories Frank wrote, Billy decides he wants to be a writer too and asks for advice. Frank tells him to simply write and gives him notebooks so he can begin writing journals. Billy begins to write about his life, getting closer to his grandma. He also begins to notice that the ringing starts at 9:03 pm every night. One night, Billy discovers that his grandma is whispering to whoever is on the phone.
Billy gets stronger over the next couple of weeks. He decides that he needs to explore the world to better himself as a writer and makes arrangements with Alice to get new prosthetics. On a chilly Thursday evening, Billy decides to leave in the morning. His grandma goes to bed early, so Billy decides to write. Right before 9:03, he waits by his grandma’s door. After a few minutes Billy doesn’t hear the ringing, instead hearing his grandma speaking. He opens the door and sees B-7 crawling onto his grandma and merging with her. Billy can tell she’s in pain, but she keeps encouraging B-7. B-7 tells Billy that it sought out his grandma to get close to Billy. Suddenly, B-7 begins to violently twitch as his grandma forces it to continue merging. She explains to Billy that she’s been terminal for a while, having not told him so he wouldn’t worry. That morning, she knew it was her last day and wanted to do one last thing. As B-7 calls out for help, Billy’s grandma tells Billy not to grieve for her and live true to himself. Billy’s grandma dies, and the remains of B-7 slowly die as well.
Billy stays with his grandma for the rest of the night and has Frank help bury her and the remains of B-7. When Frank drops him off at the hospital, he tells him that he has to experience life to write something interesting. Over the next two weeks, Billy lives with Clark and Peter while being fitted for his prosthetics. They’re the latest in flesh-colored, real-looking prosthetics and he gets used to them quickly. He leaves the hospital without his crutch and puts a carnation in his beanie to honor his grandma. Billy stays with Clark and Peter one more night, as he’s purchased a ticket to Lima, Peru. He intends to find his father, knowing that whether it ended well or not he would have a life experience worth writing about.
