“It’s nice that you feel guilt. It shows character. A lot of guys are too stupid to know when they should feel guilty.” |
Amber is a major character in Blackbird, the first story in the book of the same name. She's Nole's cheerful girlfriend who brings him comfort while he's being haunted by the Blackbird.
Physical Appearance[]
Amber has wild, shoulder-length, wavy blonde hair, blue eyes, and is in good shape. She has freckles going across the bridge of her nose and the top of her chest. Amber also has a bow-shaped mouth. Like Nole, she usually wears faded jeans, white tank shirts, and, when the weather allows it, leather jackets.
Personality[]
Amber is nice, cheerful, and carefree. She likes to tease others, with a hint of sarcasm slid into mostly everything she says. Amber can be sincere as well and cares for those she’s close with, like Nole. She can also be somewhat superstitious, believing that guilt and emotions give off energy like yin and yang.
History[]
Amber has been in many of Nole's classes the previous year and this year, however he's never really thought of her as pretty until recently. She is in the same film class as Nole and Sam, and she's partners with her friend Darla. The two teams are the last two left in class, and while Nole is explaining his idea for a horror story plot around a creepy animatronic, Amber and Darla are in a silent disagreement. Eventually they settle on the plot for their film, and Amber lightly teases Nole and Sam as they head out. Nole teases back as Darla and Amber begin discussing a poetry reading for their English class. Later that day, Amber joins Nole and Sam as they eat a pepperoni-and-jalapeño pizza. She asks about their film, telling them that hers is about knitting and will have plenty of blood. Nole tells Amber their film is about a bird, and she asks Sam for confirmation.
Three days after Sam and Nole decide on their horror movie plot, Amber asks Nole out on a date. Nole goes on the date the next evening after preparing their set and revealing his darkest secret to Sam. The next day, Amber charges into their set while Nole is waiting for Sam and reveals that they think Sam was hit by a train and that he's missing. Nole charges past Amber to get to the train tracks, and the two meet up again later at the cafeteria. Amber remarks that she's never seen Nole there on Sundays, and Nole responds that he isn't and she is actually speaking to a clone, starting a joke between the two. As they're getting their food, Nole questions aloud if he should have called her by now, which Amber responds that it would have been nice. As they're eating, Amber apologizes for having dropped the news about Sam on him the way she did, as she didn't realize how close the two were. Nole abruptly leaves when Amber calls him a nice guy.
Later that night, Amber calls Nole. Nole remembers that he was supposed to call Amber, and he goes silent, thinking of an excuse beside his crazed beliefs on the Blackbird. Amber jokingly asks if Nole is trying to turn her on using an obscene-phone-call technique, and the two joke around more, with Nole realizing that Amber helps put him at ease. Amber called due to Nole's behavior at the cafeteria, and she asks if it was about Sam. When Nole says yes, she apologizes and proposes that Nole will "find his brain" in his sleep, another running joke between the two.
Amber comes across Nole running early in the morning. She remarks that she's never seen him run in the morning, and Nole says he doesn't, and Amber concludes he is another one of his clones. The two run together and end up at the cafeteria again. Amber asks if Nole's okay, as his eyes are very red. Nole reveals that he hasn't slept all night, and when Amber asks if there's anything she can do to help Nole realizes how similar Amber and Christine Wilber are in their clothing and mouth shape. He asks Amber how she would fix something really wrong she did a long time ago that you did again recently and you want to make amends but can't apologize to the person you just did it to. Amber tells Nole that it's nice that he feels guilt, as a lot of guys are too stupid to know when they should. She then explains that she thinks you need to apologize to the first person to make amends with the second. It balances the scales in one place, and the balance radiates outward. Darla and their friend group step in and Amber joins them as Nole goes to take a shower and track Christine down.
