Ian[]
Ian is Alec and Hazel's father. He named Alec as a combination of "Eric" and the name Meg wanted. "Alexander." When Hazel was born, he and Meg began scolding Alec more and constantly praised Hazel. Ian joined Meg as she used The Growing Child to come up with exercises the mold Alec's behavior. They try having Alec name himself, have him plant a garden, and try having a family camping trip, but all three end in disaster. Ian loses faith in the books as Meg moves on to a new one called The Plan Planner. A week before Hazel's tenth birthday party, Meg tells Ian about a plan created using Chapter Five. Ian expresses his confusion over the multiple books and his little faith in them, but Meg asks if he has an alternative ideas. Not ready to give up, he goes along with the plan.
The next day, Ian and Meg constantly scold Alec in order to get him to behave better. However, Hazel begins to act worse, "accidentally" dropping Ian's shirts in the mud and talking back against Meg during dinner. The following day, when Ian tries to scold Alec for scratching the side of his car with his bike, Hazel unapologetically takes the blame instead. After dinner, Ian and Meg try to discuss Hazel's shift in behavior, but when asked if Meg looks haggard Ian doesn't refute the claim. Meg gets upset as Ian tries bringing the topic back to their kids, but Meg insults his parenting and starts an argument between them.
A few days later, Ian and Meg discover a wolf spider that Hazel had put in their bed. When they tried to order pizza, Hazel sneakily added anchovies to the order. The next day, Ian tries his best to hold everything together before Hazel's party. After dinner, he suggests hormones are to blame and that Hazel is just nervous about her party, but Meg doesn't agree. Ian dresses up in his comfiest corduroy slacks and flannel shirt for Hazel's party and is relieved as it goes great. When Hazel eventually decides to go in the Wind Tunnel, Ian notices she's upset and worries that she's going to be sick. His worries seem confirmed when Hazel runs off after wining the Yarg Foxy plush, but she quickly returns and offers it to Alec. Ian watches on as Alec yells at Hazel and rips the fox's arm, and Ian tries to calm both Meg and Alec down. This fails and Alec runs away, although he returns later with an improved attitude. Towards the end of the party, one of Hazel's friends puke on a Lonely Freddy that had made its way into the party room and Ian has an employee take it away, not noticing Alec wink at it.
