List of Minor Characters[]
Mary[]
- Not what you were looking for? See Mary (disambiguation).
Mary is Delilah's next door neighbor. She's about 5'8" with well-padded, middle-aged, and unattractive features and dowdy, old-fashioned clothes that she wears in layers and in a mismatched color hodgepodge. Mary has permed gray hair, a lined face, round tortoise-shell glasses, slightly upturned nose, and pale green eyes streaked with swirls of yellow. She loves to sing, and her apartment is decorated with Japanese items. Delilah is often annoyed with her because she can hear her weird songs through the walls of her apartment, and had once visited Mary to complain about them.
Mary comes from a family of three, and had a child who died in a fire. She's a widow who was once a teacher and had once made beaded jewelry. Mary owns a laptop to watch movies and musicals on, and she owns a typewriter to write down the songs she sings on. When Delilah suspects Mary of taking Ella, she visits her house and is given tea. She tries explaining to Mary what happened, but Mary interrupts her to explain that she doesn't buy secondhand items as the past leaves stains and bad energy follows. Delilah decides to leave, and one day while Mary is on her daily constitutional, Delilah breaks into her house and searches her room.
Rianne[]
Rianne is one of Delilah's coworkers. When Delilah oversleeps at the start of the story, Nate calls Rianne and has her cover for Delilah. Instead, Delilah has to work Rianne's two o'clock shift.
Richard[]
Richard is Delilah's ex-husband. When he was a sophomore in college, he attended a Halloween party where he meet Delilah, who was a senior in high school at the time. They spent the entire night dancing and fell in love. Richard decided to take a "sabbatical" from college and begged Delilah to come along with him, waiting until she turned eighteen so she could move away from Harper and Gerald. The two went to Europe, where Richard took Delilah to the Alps and taught her to ski. They spent the next year and a half traveling all over Europe until Richard's father demanded he come home and worked in the family business since he wasn't finishing college. Richard proposed to Delilah and his parents and sister reluctantly welcomed her into the family. Richard and Delilah have a fairy-tale wedding and moved into his parents' guesthouse. The plan from that point was for Richard to move up in the company, have babies, and eventually get their own place. However, Richard wanted to be with another woman who had blonde hair and blue eyes. Since Delilah signed a prenuptial agreement before marrying Richard, the only thing she got from the divorce was a car, old furniture, and some money.
Ali[]
Ali is one of Delilah's therapists. She theorized that Delilah liked looking at garage sales because it helped her imagine what it was like to have a family.
Gerald[]
- Not what you were looking for? See Gerald (disambiguation).
Gerald was Delilah and Harper's last foster parent. He used to be in the military, and was very strict. He set up harsh schedules for Delilah and Harper, even stating when they could use the bathroom. Delilah's hatred of alarm clocks can be attributed to him, as he used one to enforce the schedule.
Harper helped Delilah deal with Gerald by impersonating his voice and making her laugh. When Ella mimicked his voice to torture her, Delilah suspects Harper of being involved with Ella.
Hank[]
- Not what you were looking for? See Hank (disambiguation).
Hank is one of Delilah's regular customers. He is a private detective who always wears three-piece suits. Hank teaches Delilah how to pick a lock, using a hairpin he took from Mrs. Jeffrey. Mrs. Jeffrey[]
- Not what you were looking for? See Jeff (disambiguation).
Mrs. Jeffrey is an elderly woman who comes in to the diner daily for rice pudding. To demonstrate to Delilah how to pick a lock, Hank takes one of Mr. Jeffrey's hairpins. Later, while Delilah is working the night shift, Mrs. Jeffery comes in unable to sleep. She asks for some rice pudding, and Delilah freaks out after seeing Mrs. Jeffery's bright blue purse, mistaking it for Ella.

On the first night Delilah begins working the night shift, she arrives to work upbeat, much to the shock and confusion of Glen. When she freaks out over hearing an alarm, Glen reports that he doesn't hear it. The next night, Delilah sticks close to him and when sees a flash of bright blue in the walk-in, she screams and presses against him. Glen doesn't mind it but does ask why she screamed. On the fifth night, Glen runs after Delilah when she freaks out and runs outside. He looks at her with sympathy and concern, and Delilah cries in his arms. When Glen gets her back inside, he calls Nate and speaks to him about the situation.
Jackie[]
- Not what you were looking for? See Jack (disambiguation).
Jackie is the night server. She's a year or two younger than Delilah with blue eyes and bright blue glasses. Jackie is still unsure of herself. On the first night of Delilah's night shift, Jackie watches in shock and horror as Delilah tears through the kitchen looking for an alarm that Jackie can't hear. On the second night, Jackie opens the door to the walk-in, Delilah thinks she sees Ella and screams. On the third night, Jackie enters the dining room to see Delilah sprawled over the counter. On the fifth night, while Jackie is filling up pepper containers, she chats with Delilah about her college classes. Delilah freaks out again, breaking the salt and pepper shakers. Jackie sweeps up the mess until Nate arrives and speaks to her.
Rudolph[]
Rudolph, aka Rudy, is a struggling actor and one of Harper's ten housemates. While Harper is at work, she leaves Delilah with him. Delilah calls Rudolph a funky guy who's funny and nice. He spends the afternoon and evening teaching Delilah a card game he created. While Delilah doesn't understand it, she finds it entertaining. Rudolph is disappointed when Harper takes Delilah away, sticking out his lower lip before grinning at Delilah.
Manny[]
Manny is one of the actors in the performance Harper is in. He forgot one of his lines and accidently says Harper's line, so Harper covers for him by giving him a kiss.

Raul, Kate, and Julia are some of Harper's other housemates. They are all struggling actors. When Delilah hears Gerald's voice in her ears, she asks Harper and she says she only hears Raul's oldies music and the movie Kate and Julia are watching.
Unnamed Woman[]
An unnamed woman is responsible for the garage sale that Delilah got Ella from. She's middle-aged with short, spiky brown hair, and her eyes are encircled in heavy black eyeliner. She wore a yellow running suit, painted her fingernails bright red, and carried a butterscotch-colored Chihuahua named Mumford. When Delilah arrived at the garage sale, the woman was sitting next to a picnic table with a metal cash box, a pad of paper, and a calculator. The woman lets Delilah pet Mumford before assisting a slight young man in looking at records. When Delilah goes to pay for Ella, she asks for fifteen dollars off since the doll only has one functions, and the woman agrees. When Delilah returns to the house later, the woman and Mumford are gone.
