In every characterization of Afton we have, as a human he is a cowardly, sniveling little thing that tries to worm his way out of any possible wrongdoings, however the golden bunny suit makes him drastically more theatrical and bombastic.

Basically, he does it for show. It's not fun for him if you aren't terrified, because if you aren't scared of him that means he has no power over you. It's the difference between someone cowering in fear, and someone spitting in his face. Thus is why Micheal is the perfect foil to his father, he's not afraid of him. No matter where Afton goes, his son will be there to stand up against him.

The same with Charlie, even saying "I was afraid of you..but not anymore," stripping him of any power he would have and humiliating him.

In summary, Afton gets his joy in the chase, in the fear, of his victims, and doesn't kill them until they're absolutely powerless and know it.

FNAF has a horrendous fandom, but brought about non jumpscare heavy story less horror games, and basically showed that being an Indie game dev could actually be ridiculously profitable.

Theres good and bad to both fandoms.
