Evan stared at the robots onstage and suppressed a shiver. It felt like they were staring at him with their dead, soulless eyes, like at any moment they would lunge off the stage, jaws springing open…”We’d like to thank you all for coming and spending this day with us,” a somewhat mechanical voice-Freddy-said, “and we’d like to acknowledge a very special person. Would the birthday kid please stand up?” A young-ish girl stood up, smiling shyly. Evan felt a tap on his shoulder. “Hey, Evan!” A friendly voice chirped. It was his younger sister, Elizabeth.
“Hey, Lizzy.” He looked at her and smiled, then turned his attention back to the stage. “Can you feel it?” He murmured. The young girl looked confused. “What?” “Can’t you feel the hairs stand on the back of your neck?” Elizabeth shrugged cheerfully, then squinted at her brother. She followed his gaze and blinked. “They’re watching every single move that we make,” he continued. The little girl laughed and shook her head. “Oh, Evan, you’re so silly! Daddy made them. Aren’t they just the best?”
Evan stared at her. She’s not going to listen, he realized. There’s no point in trying. Changing the subject, he asked, “Where’s Michael?”
***
Michael finally felt like he belonged. Wyatt and Sophie chatted with him, gossiping about siblings and friends (and enemies)...He did notice that they were walking a little far, and it was raining pretty hard….Suddenly, Wyatt turned right and headed for a rather large building: Rolling Thunder Bowling Alley.

Elizabeth grabbed Evan’s arm. “Who cares? He said that he didn’t want to come anyway. He’s probably sulking in the bathroom or something. Just….come on!” She tried dragging him up to the stage. Evan realized what she was doing and yanked his arm back. “No! I-I-I-I-I don’t want to! You can’t make me!”
His younger sister rolled her eyes. “Stop being such a baby. They’re cute! Which one’s the scariest to you, anyway?” Evan disliked her tone of voice. “....All of them,I guess. Elizabeth frowned. She rolled her eyes again. “Fine. Go be a baby and play some dumb arcade games if it makes you feel better about yourself.” She flounced away, joining a small group of kids watching Foxy perform.
Evan sighed, shook his head, then sat down, watching. The adults were mingling in a corner, keeping an eye on their children. The children were pretty much everywhere. There was obviously a birthday party; there were at least seven children all sitting at a table with a reserved sign on it. A massive cake was sitting on the table as well. “Hey, everybody! It’s time to sing for our very special someone!”
Moxie shook her head awkwardly. “Can I lead it?” Freddy seemed to ignore her. Evan noticed that the curtains to the Pirate’s Cove were closed. “Now, we’ve got a certain somebody that doesn’t sing with us very often, and we were hoping that he’d join us tonight. Fooooooxy!” A gruff voice said, “What?” Freddy waved. “Won’t you come sing happy birthday with us?” “No,” the robot replied. All of their words were scratchy and mechanical, with odd pauses and stutters. The bear animatronic stopped moving. “The kids want you to sing, Foxy.”
The curtains to the Pirate’s Cove opened and Foxy appeared. “They do? Well, why didn’t ye say so, landlubber? Alright, lads and lassies, count down with me…Five, four three, two, one…Happy birthday to ye, happy birthday to ye…” Several children sitting near the birthday girl joined in and sang happy birthday as well. Even Elizabeth was singing! Why am I the only one that is scared of the animatronics? I mean…I like them, but I’m scared. Why am I like this?
Evan buried his head in his hands and sighed. Everybody seemed so happy. Everybody but him. I give up. I wanna go home…Elizabeth appeared out of nowhere and grabbed his arm, dragging him to a table. She shoved him at a girl standing in the middle of a group of children. “Ruth, this is Evan. He’s my brother. Evan, that’s Ruth. Today’s her birthday.” “I know…” Evan mumbled. Ruth beamed at him. “Today’s been the best day ever! There’s been cake, and presents, and friends, and I’m older now…..don’t you agree that it’s the best day? The happiest day?” Her joy was contagious, and Evan couldn’t help but smile. “I guess…”
She bounced up and down, her excitement bubbling up and spilling everywhere, making everybody that saw her smile and laugh. “And when we get home-oh yeah, my brother’s friend is taking us home today! My brother took us here but his friend-I think his name’s Jonathan or something like that-is taking us back home! We all live right next to each other-” she gestured at the group, ”and that’s how we became friends! I haven’t seen my brother for a while, though, but I wonder what his friend’s like. Anyways, I can’t wait to go home because my parents said that there was something special for me when I came back home-I wonder what it is-maybe it’s a puppy!”
Another girl piped in, “A puppy? It might be a puppy? Awwee, I love puppies! They’re sooooooooooooo cute!” Evan was honestly surprised to see that there were even a couple of boys attending her party. One of them, who had darker skin than the rest, scoffed. “You girls are always obsessed with puppies and kittens and rainbows.” He paused, then added, “Puppies are cute, though.”
Thunder cracked loudly. Suddenly, the front doors burst open and one person came running in. He was soaked and dripping water everywhere. He shoved his hands in his pockets and tried to inconspicuously slide away. “Michael?” He looked up at Evan and muttered a word quietly before walking over.
Before Evan could say anything, another person came running in. He shook his head and laughed before running over to join them. Michael turned back to Evan. “It’s time to go. C’mon. Where’s your sister?” Evan shrugged helpfully. “Right here,” she yelled. Michael frowned. Elizabeth turned around. “Goodbye, Ruth! Happy birthday!” Michael shook his head and led both of them out. “Hurry up. It’s raining hard.”
Ruth and her friends were the last ones in the pizzeria. Jonathan nodded at them. “Time to go home.” He lead them to the front entrance, then looked back, doing a head-count. He nodded, then opened the door and walked out.
***
The lights were out. The restaurant was empty. Well, empty save one figure. They slunk through the shadows and approached the main stage. You’ll be going out after this…..They started messing around with the animatronics, tampering with them and muttering random words into the darkness. It was a while before they stepped back, satisfied. That should do it. They cast one last scornful glance at the robots before melting away into the darkness.
Yes, I made Evan older than Elizabeth. Deal with it.
Sorry that this chapter came out so late, but writers block plus school equals lack of time and ideas. Hope you enjoy.
