Henry shook his head again and started forward. That’s when he heard the door open. “Shit,” he muttered before whirling around. “Oh.” It was just William. Henry put a hand on his head and laughed a little. William was concerned. “Are you okay….?” Henry looked up. “Yeah, I’m fine,” he mumbled. “You just startled me, that's all. I’m fine.” William looked skeptical, but shrugged. Some emotion flickered across his face for a moment, only a moment. “Mike’s coming today. He’s bringing Elizabeth and Evan.”
Henry blinked. “Oh? That’s…..interesting. I didn’t think he’d want to.” William sighed and crossed his arms. “He didn’t. Evan and Elizabeth spent an hour trying to convince him. I don’t know what they said that made him agree, but he did agree. Somehow.” Henry stifled a laugh. It was no surprise that sixteen-year-old Michael didn’t want to bring his siblings, but the fact that they’d argued with him for an hour was hilarious. He decided not to mention the fact that Tom was gone. “Hey….isn’t there a birthday party today? Yeah. Yeah, the party. Everything’s got to be ready for it.” Henry was half talking to himself, William noticed. “All right. Let’s start.”
***
The first people to enter Freddy’s came bursting in through the front door. Thunder rumbled in the background. A taller figure stalked in after them. The taller one had water dripping from his hair and clothes, but the other two were mostly dry. “Thanks, Mikey!” The boy called. Michael frowned. “Don’t call me that, Evan!” The girl suddenly shrieked, “DADDY! :3” ,sprinted up to William, and threw her arms around him. “Elizabeth! Evan!” The two children began to talk rapidly to their father. Michael hung back, instead leaning against a wall with his arms crossed.
More people began to trickle into the restaurant. Michael glowered at them all. I don’t want to be here. I don’t like it…..I don’t like this at all. Too many people. All just watching me. Can’t breathe. Gotta get out of here….Do they know? Urghhh….I can’t….need to….GO! Michael’s eyes shot open and he stumbled around blindly, accidentally bumping into somebody. He staggered into the bathroom and took a deep breath.
Calm down. Breathe. Breathe. He splashed some cold water on his face and stared at his reflection before shaking his head and walking away. He didn’t notice the figure watching from the shadows….No, he carried on, stopping at the main stage to watch the animatronics perform. They moved awkwardly, without much flair or…..anything that he expected from them, really. Father always talked about them like they were special or something….but really? I bet I could make something better than them.
Michael jumped when he felt a hand on his shoulder. It was William, gazing fondly at his creations. “Well, Michael? What do you think?” Michael frowned. What do I think? What do I think? They’re not good! “I hate them.” William looked startled. “Wh-” Michael interrupted him. “They’re just……boring. They move awkwardly and don’t really do anything.” And with that, he walked away.
William stared at him as he left, but Michael didn’t care. I don’t like it here. Time to go. He started for the door, but stopped when a large group of people came in. At first glance, hew saw that there were at least twelve of them. Two teenagers, a boy and a girl, were shoving each other playfully as they lead the group of children into Freddy’s. “Happy birthday,” he heard one of them mutter sarcastically. The girl laughed. The children all immediately headed for the arcade, while the two teens stood there for a second.
To Michael’s surprise, they walked towards him. Him, of all people. “Hey, buddy. I’m Wyatt, and this is Sophie. We were wondering if you’d want to come hang out with us. This place is boring. We just had to drop off my sister and her friends for the party. There’s a place not far away where we can get a bite to eat and a break from them, if you wanna come.” Michael noticed that Sophie looked somewhat hesitant. She leaned towards Wyatt. “We’re supposed to stay with them.” Wyatt frowned. “We won’t be gone for long.” He stretched out a hand. “You in?”
Michael hesitated, then shook it. “Sure. You can call me Mike.” Suddenly, he was on the floor, clutching his head. Shaking their hands….blood, all over the place…their unforgiving looks….him…..red, red everywhere….smoke….orange, yellow, and red….vision gone…..help me…help me…..HELP ME! WAKE UP! “Mike…Mike! Mike, get up!” Michael groaned and sat up, rubbing his head. Wyatt looked concerned. “Are you okay?” Michael nodded slowly. “I’m fine….” He muttered. He stood up and joined Sophie and Wyatt. Together, they pushed the door open and left. I’m fine. It’s fine. I’m fine.
Unseen, unheard, and undetected, a figure slipped forward, clinging to the shadows. It scanned the area, then saw Michael and his new friends leave. It narrowed it’s eyes and stayed where it was, watching from the shadows….always watching……forgotten....just a memory.
